I have thought Cragg to be incompetent for some time for many reasons. Shanley’s problem is, as a new president he put too much confidence in Cragg’s decision making. Cragg’s idiotic extension to Anderson and Shanley’s approval of it is the biggest example of that. Hopefully Shanley learned his lesson and doesn’t give Cragg any type of free rein on a coaching search.I have said this all along. I do not know how Cragg/ Shanley can possibly spin his departure in a way that does not make them look completely incompetent. Anyone who thinks this doesn’t matter is kidding themselves.
Funny though how Carnesseca was sold out all season for a team that was completely unwatchable.
I personally found yesterdays game extremely watchable. Same for our wins against UConn and Providence.
I this case, I will not adhere to the “the devil you know is better than the devil you don’t”.
We know what we have, and what we have is completely unwatchable.
Of course this school’s track record of coaching hires does not bring confidence that it will finally be done correctly.
But I am confident t
I agree with this totally. This is where I give Cragg some credit. Regardless of how it's done, he had "fannies in the seats" throughout an absolutely horrid season. There were at least two games when I wondered if I would be the only schmuck to show up. Yet, attendance was decent all year.
I have to disagree with you. The new President is not going to stand for his signature sport program to be mediocre at best.I don't see him leaving either. His "never had a losing season" mantra is ideal for a program that thrives in mediocrity. There are no plans to become elite. The powers that be are elated with a mid-major program selling tix in a Big East Conference. It makes life easy and pressure free.
The scary thing is my Con Ed CEO mention is better than some of the serious suggestions on this thread. I think this thread needs a 24 hour timeoutSince the all ConEd coaching list has unsurprisingly, but deservedly, gone off the rails, I suggest we get it all out of our system over the next week or so.
From there, all our “please for the love of all that is college basketball holy” energy must be focused on hiring a top tier coach, and that still starts with Pitino.
Not true GC. There was a much publicized New York Post article just before start of the season where CMA said this was the most talented team he'd had at SJU and also said they were definitely good enough to make the Dance and that was the goal. These recent posts have got me thinking that perhaps the posters on one hand and Cragg and Anderson on the other have different expectations of what constitutes a successful season. Posters are looking for a post season bid and competing with the top echelon of big east teams.
I don’t recall Anderson talking about post season play and with Cragg setting him up with easier and easier OOC schedules he achieves his better than 500 win loss record.
SJU hasn’t had much success at making post season play but the prior coaches always mentioned it as a goal.
Maybe Anderson figures it has been so long since we won a post season game it is not really expected.
Totally agree! I believe there have been public comments made by Cragg, Shanley and Anderson that have indicated that getting the team into the Big Dance regularly was a standard they aspire to achieve. Additionally, I kind of remember, that when hired, Mike Anderson talked about building an NCAA tournament champion as something that he aspired to achieve here. If the bar has been lowered, it has been based largely by results not by stated aspirations or goals. Not true GC. Speedy calls time outs. Enough said
Pretty poor response unless it’s meant to be sarcasm. If you don’t want another mistake I wanna know these candidates strengths and weaknesses.Speedy calls time outs. Enough said

In order to assess risk, you have to determine what there is to lose. Care to explain what SJU has to lose if it parts way with Anderson? It’s a tough call to be sure. Replacing Anderson is riskier than many on this board seem to think. They will have to go with an “up and comer“ and that is always a crap shoot.

Everyone seems to be assuming that CMA is, to coin a phrase, "irredeemable" at this point. I'm not so sure. I am, on the other hand, 99.9% sure that his buyout will cause the admin to go with a mid-major "up and comer" whom the odds say will not ultimately materialize into a successful high-major coach - and in any event, will involve another lengthy rebuild. I'll take my chances with one more year of CMA.In order to assess risk, you have to determine what there is to lose. Care to explain what SJU has to lose if it parts way with Anderson?
