Possible Coaching Candidates

I was a MA proponent but I've wanted nobody to leave as much as I do Mike this year. Even Norm left the program better than he found it.
I am on the Pitino bus, but at 70 I'd want to see someone "in training" to take over when Rick is done. I don't know who that "someone" is but if Rick comes, I would trust him to work with Cragg to find that "someone". Even if Rick lasts as long as Boeheim, that is at most 7-9 years of building.

If there's an insistence on having a 'Coach In Waiting' from either party it would likely be Masiello. I highly highly doubt either side would insist on that though.

I'm hoping there will be a surprise firing at the end of the year and a good coach will become available. Not loving any of the realistic candidates so far.

There are a number of hurdles for Pitino to clear that make it unlikely he is the next coach here.
1. Will he be accepted by the decision makers?
2. What is Pitino worth now that the NCAA has cleared him? If he is wanted by the administration, then he may get knocked out here as no way the school pays him 3 or 4 million per year, if not more.
3. Does Pitino believe that he will have sufficient support from the admin and boosters in terms of facility upgrades and NIL money? If not, he will look elsewhere.
All of these factors make him a longshot. In the 30 to 1 range.

It’s funny after the debacle of the Lavin firing followed by the Mullin and Slice fiasco then what could have been the most embarrassing coaching search since Tennessee almost hired Greg Schanio, I felt we were lucky to get someone with as good a pedigree as Mike Anderson.

It clearly did not work out the way we were hoping, but he didn’t do anything to publicly embarrass us on a national stage. Admittedly a low bar but not one that all our coaches can say they achieved that at St John’s.

Sometimes things just don’t pan out the way we thought they would and you have to rethink your strategy and move forward. Our problem is we’ve gotten it wrong every time since Louie (I’d like to say except Lavin because I like Lavin). And with each successive misfire it makes it harder to correct course. As basic as it sounds we need a plan of action and an administration ready to full that plan aggressively.

Anderson will leave here as possibly the only full time non interim Sju coach I can remember not getting the team to either the NIT or NCAA.
Very true, hard to believe!! What a complete and utter failure! And an expensive one at that.

Could we lock the BOT members in a closet and claim they all got covid and Paultzman, Moose, Fordham, espnken & SJU79 run operations until Pitino is signed, sealed, and delivered. Plus, make it so that the contract can't be voided.

On the serious side. It seems like the BOT sound like a bunch of miserable people that wants all SJU fans/alumni's to be miserable right with them.

Tomorrow is March 1st. CMA's fate has been sealed for about a month now and the season ends in 7 or 8 days. There are always moving pieces when it comes to the college basketball coaching carousel but there shouldn't be much scrambling in this search with how much lead time Cragg and Shanley have had in preparation for a new coaching hire. Not saying they are or will be scrambling but they should at least have a short list of realistic candidates by now and have been in contact with their agents to gauge if the interest is mutual.
