Possible Coaching Candidates

I'll preface this by saying a lot can change in four years, and maybe the dots I'm connecting here are wishful thinking as I'm a diehard, but in 2019 as Chris Mullin was steping away from the program, Pitino reportedly told Adam Z. in a text that he would bring St. John's to the elite level not seen since Louie roamed the sidelines. In recent days he said he would only consider leaving Iona for a special place that he can take to a Final Four. Just saying...
Gut feeling, he badly wants to awaken the sleeping giant that has been dormant for so long. He knows the school that he considers a "special place" should be way way better then the school has been. and he wants to put SJU basketball on his shoulders and take us on a ride to glory.

He's the only one that could do it, if only the damn BOT would just wake up.

Plus, he's 70....does he really want to move to South Florida or Gibip, ie South Bend or elsewhere? He can stay within a half-hour of home and Winged Foot and return triumphant to the greatest basketball arena in the world. The stars are aligned. It's made for Hollywood. C'mon St. John's, don't eff this up.

In my exhaustive Google search on Speedy Claxton, I just realized that Hofstra has a far better on campus arena than we do. I guess it's all about pride.

Also, they're no longer the Flying Dutchman.

Don’t you think the school has to look higher then Jones and Langel? Neither have instead cred on the recruiting trail. Do you want to go through a 4-6 year rebuild while these coaches get their feet wet recruiting the level of player necessary to win at this level, 4 star recruits?

Go big or go home. Pitino, Beard or bust. Remember you are asking these coaches to go against the likes of McDermit, Cooley, Smart, Miller etc.

When you say "or bust" - does "bust" = Jones/Langel or someone at that level? Cause think we should be ready for that "bust" option. Not sure if anyone has seen our performance the past 20 or so years... but we aren't exactly a destination for a high-rising coach...We will have to take a shot on a guy and hope, given time, they are able to succeed here.

I hear you on high profile coaches that have "scars" - just think there are highER profile programs that will be looking at them as well.

Here's a good way to look at the SJU coaching job... How many coaches have taken this job since Louis and then moved on to a 'bigger program" vs. how many coaches have taken this job and then became TV analysts or irrelevant?

It's retreads or unproven - good luck with getting 'young up and coming' coaches...

All right if Pitino isn't hired, I'm fully on board with Team Speedy.

I just rewatched Game 6 of the 2003 NBA Finals where he almost single-handily delivered the championship to the Spurs.

Showing off your ring in a recruit's home can work wonders....

Speedy’s done a nice job there. He paid his dues too as an assistant and came back to his roots after playing in the league. I appreciate that. I wonder how we’d perform if he was the HC this year and had Shoes and Van as ACs supporting him in recruiting.

As far as Carnesseca, I’m probably in the minority but I think it’s a special arena with history, but we keep doing a disservice to it putting lipstick on it. The seat backs and the student sections behind the baskets are amateurish. I wonder if we can ever remove those student sections.. it’d make the court and arena feel a little bigger and spaced out. Most students sit in the crowd to begin with.

Also hang some banners and retired numbers up in the ceiling. Hang 30 of them, do something that demonstrates our past successes that are eye opening. We have such a rich history. Show it off and intimidate the opponent and give ourselves some respect and recognition. We have it pasted on a white bland wall. Cmon now. We’re a sleeping giant in so many areas. Hopefully we start getting things right.

Okay I’ve compiled the coaching candidates into one simple easy to understand post in order of quality by category:

Attempted Extortion Victims:

1. Chris Mack
2. Rick Pitino
3. Josh Pastner

alleged criminal behavior:

1. Chris Beard
2. Tim Welsh
3. Lamont Smith

Are we sure this is an upgrade:

1. Mike Brey
2. Matt Langel
3. James Jones

People we will ask and they will say no:

1. Speedy Claxton
2. Bobby Hurley
3. Bob Richey

in conclusion our most likely coach next year if CMA is not retained:

1. Donald Copeland
2. Glenn Braica
3. Greg St. Jean

Gallows humor not meant to be taken seriously. (But also 100% possible) 🤣🤣🤣

Rick Pitino
Mike Brey
Chris Mack
Bobby Hurley
Matt Langel
Robert Jones
Speedy Claxton
Jared Grasso
John Becker

Anyone think there is a name outside this list that will be seriously considered? Asking cause I don’t know.

CA needs a new roof that expands upward, not downward to give the place a bigger feel and allow for more airflow to cool down mjmaher.

Some other names where I wouldn't be surprised if it leaks that they were on campus for an interview.

Mike Rhoades
James Jones
Kimani Young
Keith Urgo

Does anyone think that an ex pro coach / asst would be interested a la Mike Woodson at IU. Obviously they would need coaching experience not an alum because we saw how that turns out...

I think their might be one or more on your list that won't be considered.

I thought Rhodes should have Been considered last time. I was worried Jones might get it last time.

Young and Brandin Knight are the two assistants that interest me at all. I’m gonna stay away from the one year success guy in Urgo even if what he’s done is incredibly impressive.

We need to bring Kevin back home.
