Possible Coaching Candidates

I feel we need a poll... should the job come open, which problematic coach is the best fit for St. John's
1. Chris Beard
2. Kevin Ollie (I check his show clause is over)
3. Rick Pitino
4. Mark Gottfried
5. Greg Marshall

or do we just go with a staff of local problems:

6. Tim Welsh HC, Mike Rice Associate HC, Bobby G, Assistant Coach, Jerome Allen DOBO (we'd have to sue the NCAA, but i think we could get him)

6. Claxton
7. Satan ( if we are guaranteed an NCAA birth in the next 4 years )

Uh-oh fellas.
I got in my time machine and brought this post back from April 5, 2023:

"Paul Hewitt had a memorable run one year at GTech.

Who says he can't do the same here?"

1. Beard, current and the best coach out there.
2. Pitino, older but still has the chops.
3. Mack, a nasty SOB when you have to oppose him but has a killer mind set and is relentless.

How does the athletic department negotiate these basketball coaches contracts?

We had to pay full load on Slice when Mullin clipped him; are we also paying full load on CMA, too?

Doesn't the athletic department know there is a law school right on campus, with a pretty good business law reputation?? How is it we get taken to the cleaners?
Not unusual to see these kinds of contracts. For example, Danny Hurley at UConn and Bobby Hurley at ASU both have contracts that pay them out 100% of the entire remaining contract if they are fired without cause. CMA may not get 100%, but there’s no reason to believe it would be considerably less.

The big issue with CMA is that Cragg/Shanley gave him a 6-year extension after only 2 years at SJU and no NCAA bid. Completely unnecessary and financially reckless. You just don’t give someone that kind of contract extension before they have delivered the results.

Just some morning Matt Langel stats.

Last five seasons ranks within conference:

Pts scored: 1st 4x, 3rd 1x
Pts Allowed: 1st 1x, 2nd 3x, 3rd 1x
3pt%: 1st 3x, 2nd 2x
Assists: 1st 4x, 3rd 1x
Rebounds: 1st 3x, 3rd 1x, 4th 1x

No surprise why he’s dominated the league over that time. For scoring so many points, still seems to suggest he doesn’t just forget about defense all together.

Cragg gave him the contract, Shanley approved it. Shanley’s big mistake was putting faith in Cragg. Cragg’s giving Anderson a 6 year extension under the circumstances is right up there with such other bone headed moves by the school like firing coach Lapchick as he was about to land Lew Alcindor, not recruiting Rick Barry, not picking up Akeem the Dream at the airport and others.

Difference here is that the president was fooled thinking Cragg knew what he was doing. Unreal.

Imagine if Pitino took the job. The first recruit he would bring in would be a point guard. This board would go bananas for recruiting over Posh. The Posh we see could not get much floor time.

I know nothing about him, so maybe he's the nice kind of boring hire we need.

Of course, Colgate being the Patriot League, you wonder how down and dirty this guy will get in recruiting, but that could just be conference bias on my part.

Langel would be a great choice. He’s young, he’s won and he’s from NJ/philly area. He’s been an asst. coach at Temple.

If we aren’t getting a Pitino or a more accomplished coach then you get an up and comer like Langel.

What about Deuce? Great Post-Game interviews. Jarvis can join as the director of "freelance offense"

Seriously, do you think any big name coach would come here? I'm sorry but I just don't see it. We are a bottom half of the league team with limited resources and a city that doesn't care about CBB. Better to go to a place with big donors and bigger N$L offers.

If Pitino is off the board and they can’t lure Mack, getting a guy like Kevin Ollie might not be bad. You have to think after his experience with UConn that he would come here extremely motivated to do well, beat UConn and finish ahead of them every season. I think he would be driven.

Of all the names that have been mentioned in this and other threads, Kevin Ollie is by far the worst.

Yuck to Ollie.
