Possible Coaching Candidates

Will Bret be able to recruit players to Saint John’s ?
That's an excellent question. At first I was excited when I think Mug suggested him as a possibility first. I used to watch him coach when I would go to Hofstra games and he was coach at Delaware and then watched him in Bog East and he was definitely an excellent coach. To be fair I really dont watch ACC basketball all that much so haven't watched his teams lately. So now I'm not so sure it's a good pick

But the one thing I do like is his honest. Look at what he said after losing to florida state this year that I just found on the cbs website

"I certainly haven't been able to help them much. I told them that. I said, 'I've done a horrible job with you, fellas.'" he said. "I [told the team], 'I misread you.' I thought we would be ready to compete. That's the boss's responsibility. Totally accountable. Totally accountable."

He's also connected in that he got fired from his last job. Perfect fit!
Yes but it was a pro job. He made the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021 with Atlanta. Made the playoffs last season. He could sell kids that he knows what it takes to get them to the next level. I’m not saying hire him but we could do a lot worse.

I use to have this argument with a buddy who didn’t believe a good coach could loose it and not be able to do the job anymore. Well I think Anderson and Brey are examples. What worked for them in the past doesn’t work anymore and they have not adapted.

Anderson has no idea what to do when his 40 minutes of hell which so much of his offense is predicated on (points off of turnovers, quick shots by the other team leading to fast breaks, etc.) coupled with no real outside shooters or someone who can put the team on his back offensively. His flaws as a coach and strategist is magnified and he either won’t or can’t change.

Brey has recruited players who in the past fit what he was doing and was able to coach some up while others were just ballers. All knew their roles and did their jobs and played his system. He is either not getting those types of players anymore or they are not buying into his system and he hasn’t or can‘t adapt.

That is absolutely very fair and reasonable. +1

For anyone not name Pitino, turing this program around is going to be a heavy lift. To me, Brey is another guy near the end of his career who will take the millions and not have the energy, "piss and vinegar" necessary.

Considering where our program and where Brey is at this moment in time, I think he would be a bad choice for us.

Brey is such a bad choice to me I’m almost tempted to say let CMA stay. Or give Van the job at that point. If you take a 60 year old retread who is going in the wrong direction you might as well pack up the program.
I think this is why Brey won't happen. It seems too similar to the hiring of Anderson. A high major coach in his 60's who was fired/pushed out from his previous job simply because the program had clearly declined.

I don't see how SJU can sell that type of hire when you just fired a very similar hire from 4 years ago.

Although with SJU they always seem to find a way to screw things up so who knows.

For those who think Chris Mack falls into that same category I will disagree since I think Mack being much younger and his body of work at Louisville was too small to draw the conclusion that his best days are behind him.

Rick is on a silver platter. Things have never lined up like this over the last 20 years and over the last 4 coaching searches.
Doesn't matter, school will

My first choice is Pitino, but, I would be very happy w Mack. His body of work at Xavier was very good.

How much actual coaching do guys who are good enough to make the NBA actually need? Most NBA coaches just seem to roll the balls out and manage egos.

Plus . . . he got fired. He can sell kids on not knowing what to do with NBA players.

Coach K has always looked out for St. John's.

I don't think he'd recommend Bret if he thought he was a retread
