Possible Coaching Candidates

Didn't go to St. John's. My dad did later in life so I was alive when he started there. That probably makes me a fan for 42-ish years, I guess? I'm in too deep to go anywhere.

Am I bummed if it's not the guy who would have an immediate and electric impact? Sure. But if it's Langel or Speedy I'm not going anywhere. I'm an Islanders and Jets fan. Where the hell am I really going to go? My only saving grace sports-wise is that I've been in the Bay Area since 1999. But if you really really press me on it, I still say I'm a Knicks fan even though I like and enjoy Golden State waaaaaaay more.
If it's Langel or Speedy I'll still watch, but not gonna put my heart into it just to get pissed that he's not the guy and gotta do another search.

I'm a knicks fan also and never seen win anything but it's diffirent, knicks never win a championship and i get pissed, but then I get over it.
With SJU it bothers me more for some reason, then I'm watching the NCAA Tournament and I'm always saying why can't SJU be there.

I'm a Knicks fan, Rangers fan, Yanks fan, and Giants fan, ND fan in college football, but there's that extra thing about St. John's that it kills me watching the past 20 years. Just getting to the point where I can't take it anymore.

Has anybody mentioned Travis Ford? He’s won at a few different places. Has never won big in March but he’s only 53 years old. Could be hungry to prove it on a bigger stage.

He had the bigger stage at OK State and won 44% of conference games. 1 NCAA in 6 years at St. Louis. He’s obviously someone who is a capable coach, not sure he’s the one you pay a 10 mil buyout to go get though.

Does anyone really know the buyout? The speculation here was 5 mil. Zach B says 10 mil (But honestly he didn't sound to sure).

The way he lost the team this year he may just want to leave...Yeah right...

If it is 10 mil there zero chance he gets let go. No way the school eats 10 mil and throws another 2-4 mil for a new coach.

Who here was speculating $5 million? That would be unusually low considering he has another 4 years on his contract. In any event, if Anderson lands another job, his compensation at the new gig would reduce the buyout owed by SJU. Imposssible to know the final amount until the all chips fall onto the table.

If CMA's contract has 10 mill remaining on it and the buyout is 10 million than that is not a buyout it's paying off the contract. If Cragg did this he has an IQ of zero.

How does the athletic department negotiate these basketball coaches contracts?

We had to pay full load on Slice when Mullin clipped him; are we also paying full load on CMA, too?

Doesn't the athletic department know there is a law school right on campus, with a pretty good business law reputation?? How is it we get taken to the cleaners?

Of course not. That case was one of the biggest miscarriages of justice in history. My point was to point out the inconsistency of Mickey Cragg and the St. John’s administration. I would have no problem supporting their reluctance to go after coach Beard had they not overlooked the indiscretions of the other criminals they brought on board.

I used the OJ criminal trial as a way to teach new mental health staff the difference between "reasonable doubt", "preponderance of the evidence", and the "clear and convincing" evidence standard used in civil commitment hearings. The bizarre malpractice of the LA detectives in handling the blood evidence in the case was "a reasonable doubt" unto itself.

Speaking of buyouts and Beard: Texas has to pay out 70% of his remaining contract if he was "fired without cause."

Employment attorney Austin Kaplan says according to Beard’s contract, if UT terminated him without cause, Beard would be owed 70% of his pay until the end of his term which is was set to end in 2028. But if its proven Beard violated his contract, UT won’t owe him a penny.

“I think there's a 1,000% chance that coach Beard will sue UT. And I think that there are millions of dollars in the contract. If he's fired without cause. The question is looking at just the terms of the contract. Did UT have cause to fire coach beard or not?”

Kaplan says that will be left up to the courts to decide if Beard files a lawsuit and if UT can prove Beard's conduct was unbecoming of a head coach.

We have leaders of industry like Jimmy Shannon and Margaret Keane who sit on the BOD. I just couldn’t believe they would let Pitino who is enjoying life living on WCC, let him take the Georgetown job. You know he would kick our ass 2 times a year atleast.

Unfortunately it does not mean much. Their accomplishments in business are to be lauded, but that does not mean they comport themselves the same way on the Board.

Most college board members enjoy the perks and status. They agree to well, agree.

If any one of them would have signed off in the business world, the equivalent to the coaching hires ar SJU, they would never have been around long enough to be considered industry leaders.

Just because you're a great business mind and can help school make broader business & educational decisions, doesn't mean you can make a good decision on a coach. While a big business decision, you need to know more than the historical headlines.

Let's hope they, and any others who may have a seat at table, understand basketball landscape and are willing to face reality of where we've fallen to and what will happen if they make ultra safe decision.

From business standpoint Pitino is the only hire (unless you get Jay Wright, no chance). He sells tickets and we’re competitive, with use of transfer market keeping Posh/Storr we’re NCAA team. Pitino comes in we play 8 games at MSG not a problem. Pinzon under a Pitino would be a great talent. Now I watch a lot of college basketball and I would hire Becker/Speedy/Urgo/Marcierello/Grasso, however those guys are not selling tickets and we’re probably waiting 3 yrs to make NIT and that’s with a transfer market.
