Possible Coaching Candidates

Well he is a head coaching legend there, no?
I'm sure he went to plenty of other games in Cameroon indoor stadium. If this was the only game that he's been to this year then yeah I'd be worried.

Just as the Pitino haters say a hard no to him, I'm saying a hard no to Brey.

All in then ACC. OK his 2nd and 3rd years they did great, went to the elite8,
Look at the last 7 years though, just 2 ncaa Tournament appearances.

Would he keep Macron and shoes to recruit?

SJU wouldn't be anything special.
To be fair they probably would have made the NCAA tournament in 2020 if not for the Covid year.

Yeah maybe Georgetown, that's been discussed plenty here. I personally don't see many power conference schools out there that will

A) Have an opening
B) Pass on one of the younger rising stars type coaches that are attainable to them in favor of a 70 year old.
C) Make sense for Pitino

Again, I could be wrong, I just don't think it's a foregone conclusion by any stretch that there will be a handful of more desirable jobs calling him up next month.
I am not saying there definitely would be, but there could be. I have to feel with his ”Get Out of Jail Free” card from the NCAA, Pitino probably thinks so.

SJU/Providence was the first division 1 college game Coach K was at this season and Duke/ND was the first game he's attended in Cameron Indoor this season. Before the season he had said he won't be attending games at Cameron Indoor this season so to not be a distraction.

If I'm an Ohio State who will get talented kids no matter who the coach is, but I'm pissed that my current good coach can't get past first weekend, I definitely try to lure a Pitino. At this point I think it's just as much about keeping his wife happy though. Eastern seaboard for him, I think unless something wows both of them.

I think we should be looking for someone who has head coaching experience and has consistently won big over more than a year or two. What about Carmen Maciariello? I don’t know much about him, but it seems to me that the record he has had over 4 years at Siena is pretty much a miracle. He has a record a bit like Jay Wright at Hofstra, winning at a school with no basketball tradition. The only other coach to win at Sienna was Fran McCaffrey, who has gone on to do pretty well at Iowa. In fact he started winning much quicker than Wright did at Hofstra and for the most part he has out performed Pitino in the MAAC with far lower recruits. Also, as a bonus, he is only 44 years old and he is from NY, so he might take the job.

If they do move on, they need to avoid jumping at candidates who have solely won with senior and 5th year laden teams. Pitt and Fordham are prime examples this year. Not saying that Capel and Urgo wont be good coaches, but winning after you’ve lost your seniors is more indicative of a program builder.

Well Louis Orr, Paul Hewitt and Mike Deane did very well there as well. They also had winning records in power conferences at their next jobs but none achieved sufficient success to avoid getting fired.

I’d like to add two points on the coaching situation. I get that the team has not won enough in 4 years to get to the tournament and that is a bad look. However:

1.). Starting over with anyone other than a proven coach who can recruit big east level players, puts us in another 4 year rebuild that we all know would likely take 10 even if we started winning consistently and got ranked by year 5. There has been little success over the past 30 years in the “wash, rinse, repeat” approach of hiring a new coach every 4-5 years.

2.). Given how many years and money Coach Anderson is owed, I just don’t see him getting replaced without a super coach communicating interest. But then you gotta pay that guy in addition.

I’d take Pitino at this point because he’s one of the few that would be an instant draw for talented players to this program, and he can’t possibly be satisfied with recruiting players to Iona.

The guy has won at the highest level, but I just don’t see the St John’s leadership going for it. The fans are in a tough spot. We can’t seem to find a coach that can build the program beyond the middle of the pack in the Big East.

Pitino has a reputation of coaching players to their full abilities and giving them a chance of playing at the next level which very few , if any, of the other potential coaches have.

Siena has plenty of history and a tradition of coaches leaving for power jobs. Carm has done well, but nothing to exceed many of his predecessors yet.

jay had 7 seniors, his last year at hofstra.

Yes, but like Capel they were his seniors. I think the point holds better with Urgo with regard to not giving him total credit for his accomplishments. 4 of their top 7 are Neubauer kids and 3 Neptunes. Gotta wait at least a year and probably more to see what Urgo's potential is at roster construction and coaching his own kids.

I am of the opinion that a successful St Johns coach will have to be able to maintain some form of roster continuity, which is a challenge in this day and age. But when you are relying on 3-4 star players and transfer castoffs the best chance for success is to build from within through added experience and maturity. Then again that's why I had high hopes for this year's team in September.

Now that coach Beard has been cleared of any wrongdoing, any chance the braintrust at least take a look? Talk about a home run hire.

Question: Where would a coach like Pitino take the current roster this season? I think we have a pretty talented bunch who just need more direct coaching. Under a higher caliber coach, Jones and Curbelo would have been good players. Storr would have been playing minutes earlier in the season, and guys like Wusu would be further developed. Just a thought...

Beard has not been cleared of any wrongdoing. The charges were dropped because his wife didn’t cooperate. There’s a big difference.

Well as long as the charges are dropped, Cragg and company should be ok with it. After all, the school honored a guy who murdered someone cause the charges were dropped and hired a Rap artist to perform on the opening night of hoops season who Cragg was aware he threw his pregnant girlfriend off a balcony but since the charges were dropped, it was ok with him.

Hopefully they remain consistent here and consider coach Beard. 😎👍

If the BOT doesn’t want Pitino, Beard is not even a thought.
