Possible Coaching Candidates

Lets lockup one the Van Gundy's. They are always mentioned for every NBA opening why not college as well.

Because the jobs are totally different. No recruiting in the NBA and that is probably the most important aspect of the college job.

Doesn’t have to be a blue blood.
Ok but who is going to offer him a job that would be more desirable to him than SJU? I’m not saying it’s not possible but curious as to which schools you think may open that would offer him the job that he would find more desirable than SJU

Quit frankly I have not really paid attention to what coaches at what schools re on the hot seat this year outside the one obvious and one that should be obvious in the Big East.

My thinking is and the parameters would be a State school in a Big Five Conference with a big budget, facilities and nice size student fan base who has been mediocre in recent years that is looking for some invigoration.

Or the obvious Big East school who is located in the talent rich DMV area with a larger endowment, deeper pockets and a lower cost of living.

Yeah maybe Georgetown, that's been discussed plenty here. I personally don't see many power conference schools out there that will

A) Have an opening
B) Pass on one of the younger rising stars type coaches that are attainable to them in favor of a 70 year old.
C) Make sense for Pitino

Again, I could be wrong, I just don't think it's a foregone conclusion by any stretch that there will be a handful of more desirable jobs calling him up next month.

Georgetown is the obvious Big East program. But as SJU85 pointed out, there will be state schools in the mix- I can’t say exactly who, but Pitino didnt go out and hire a new agent recently for the heck of it.

I have no insider information to how Iona runs their AD budget, but I think their goal is to be a top-tier team in conference. Expectations reasonably set. Before Pitino they had board favorite Tim Cluess coaching and if I’m not mistaken he made the tournament 4 years in a row prior to RP’s hire and something like 6 out of 9 years total.

I believe Iona thinks they can achieve that success with smart hire that know the tri-state scene. No need to break the bank for Pitino and especially no need to lock in a lot of future money if Pitino runs into scandal again. For cause is not always ease to prove and my guess is Iona doesn’t have the budget to pay two coaches or a coach and a protracted legal battle.

Fair warning, I have a strong anti-Pitino bias so maybe that last worry isn’t on Iona’s mind.

as far as future coaches, I never like cutting ties with a coach unless there is a clear upgrade. That’s why firing/not extending Lavin was such a head scratcher for me.

So if we were to move on from MA, we better have a yes from someone. My call list would be:

1. Speedy Claxton
2. Brandin Knight
3. Bob Richey
4. Donald Copeland

I think if Repole comes back into the fold he’d reach out to 5. Bobby Hurley I don’t love it but I don’t think it would be a downgrade either. I’d assume little less that Lavin success but instead of a charming polished leader we’d accomplish it in his hot headed manner.

I do have a strong lean to younger former PGs as coaches, if you look back to our interesting coach search that got us MA, I was begging us to interview Shaheen Hallaway (although if we did hire him we wouldn’t have gotten the magic St. Peter’s run and he wouldn’t have had the big jump in name recognition).

I will concede to the RP fans that if it is inevitable that he coaches at SJU the time to hire him would have been in 2018. We already knew at that time Mullin wasn’t interested in the job any more (or successful at it), RP would have been 65, easily hirable for cheap, and he could funnel money to players without having to compete with NIL like when he achieved peak success.

These are the things I think about at 3 am.
A Kid by the name of Hunter Sabety who I still keep in close contact with use to work for me , played 2 years at Hofstra is very close to Speedy still talks to him almost everyday .

I recently asked him to text him if he would have any interest in the St. John’s job if it ever opened up , Speedy replied that he would have no interest in leaving Hofstra he doesn’t need the money , and wants to stay there for a long time .

Things always change , money does always talk even if he doesn’t need it . Just thought I would share this with the board .

while I would like to think that's him playing it safe and not putting any rumors out with even his friends while he still has a job especially since he is a stand up guy holy cow I had no idea he made this much money in the nba. Good for him !
