Assuming no Pitino who would be best bet.
Mid majors:
- I like Becker and Langel the most of the realistic mid/low major types.
Jones over Grasso for #2.
I have no clue on Claxton.
With our luck Langel will go undefeated in patriot and win a game or two in NCAAT and take a better job.
“Retreads”:
- I guess the camp is split 50/50.
I certainly would be happy with Mack or Holtman if he finds himself looking for a new job.
Less interested in Turgeon.
Much less interested in Alford.
Potential jumping ship HM:
- Not really excited for Boynton or Bobby Hurley. I think they’d be upgrades but not the answer we are looking for. Could they win at decent level here? Probably.
Assistant coach:
- Kimani Young and Brandin Knight are hot names with local connections. Not sure if there are any others. It did work really well for Kansas State. But can we hand it over to a guy who’s never ran a program before in the state we are in?
I think you can tell I'm a Becker guy, because I know he can coach. It's only half of it but half a loaf is better than none. If a guy like Becker kept a guy like Van Macon around I would have felt pretty good about it all five years ago. But with free transfers and NIL, how does he get anyone to toss needed money at this mess? I have no idea. I don't like Langel at all because I think he brings the same issues Becker would bring and he has not had near the same level of career success at the lower level. They both started in 2011. Langel's career conference record in the Patriot League - .607. Becker in the America East - .837. Pikiel was .606 but I will say he inherited a mess and Becker inherited a strong program. Still .837 is .837. And also, I saw almost every game Stonybrook played against Vermont on TV when the two coached against each other and what you saw was two really well coached teams. But I'm not related to Becker and I will prove it by once again saying I wish they would just hire my cousin Rick.
Other than Becker from this list I kind of like Grasso as he won't be boring. And since I have serious doubts any of these guys can turn things around, and this is entertainment after all, Grasso sounds pretty good. Stick around for the handshake lines when we play UCONN!
Claxton could be a great hire, but that would be a very big gamble, as it's not hard to see him failing. There is so little to go on. I don't think the school has anyone, including the AD, who has the chops to sort it out. They won't go that way.
The only retread I could stomach is Mack, which is kind of ironic since I always kind of hated him when he was at Xavier. If you are going to hire Holtman, might as well save some money and go with Langel or Becker who would be cheaper. I don't see Holtman coming here and having quick recruiting chops. As for Mack I seem to remember Goodman saying they were close, and that Mack was totally burnt out and don't expect to see him back anytime soon. If I didn't dream that it's a real red flag.
Hurley used the school just four years ago and helped setup a nationally embarrassing search process that would have landed SJU on Lettermans Top Ten if he hadn't already retired. How can the BOT possibly have a problem with Pitino and NOT Hurley? I don't think he is candidate, and I rather have Wojo than him (if it is just between the two) if those were the options.
Boynton is basically replacing Anderson with Anderson, except he has had even less prior success. Hard pass!
Young and Knight are the Stubblefield hire, NYC version. DePaul still looks like Depaul to me since he got there. Like Claxton they would have the "you never know" factor. I'm not sure I like them better than Van Macon, who they will never hire of course. All that equals another no from me.
For any old movie buffs - deciphering this hire is just like "War Games."
The only right move is not to play.
