Possible Coaching Candidates

this hot seat report includes coaches at Oregon State (Tinkle) and Georgia Tech (Pastner) who won conference championships and made the NCAA tournament in 2021. It is very hard to stay on top for long and keep the fan base happy.

Ostensibly, their recent success could be viewed as better than CMA's resume when he was hired. Would anyone think they would be slam dunk successes?

My point is that the choice between an experienced "retread" with some success or an up and comer is very hard to make and there's no guarantee you get it right. The SJU administration has to decide if we are trending in the right direction with CMA to make a change. While in some respects I think the program is, if they look solely at the results in the BE, a change is due.

I suspect the Charleston HC Pat Kelsey could get a look at Georgia Tech if Pastner is fired

Pastner would be a terrific assistant coach hire, great recruiting contacts.

Hearing Porter Moser just two years at Oklahoma is angling for the Notre Dame job.

I still like Becker more than guys like Robert Jones and Langel. He has done at least as much as Pikeil did in the exact same conference and Pikeil is now cited most places as the model for what you want. But really other than he who must not be named (as coach apparently) I don't like anyone and think SJU is in for more of the same. The school is setup for a layup of a hire and seems to want to toss it back out to a double-teamed shooter. After watching the actual team on offense it seems appropriate - I will give them that.

I am ready for the process and intend to start a "TBA - is he really the Guy?' thread the day of the press conference to save everyone else the trouble.

Assuming no Pitino who would be best bet.

Mid majors:
- I like Becker and Langel the most of the realistic mid/low major types.
Jones over Grasso for #2.
I have no clue on Claxton.
With our luck Langel will go undefeated in patriot and win a game or two in NCAAT and take a better job.

“Retreads”:
- I guess the camp is split 50/50.
I certainly would be happy with Mack or Holtman if he finds himself looking for a new job.
Less interested in Turgeon.
Much less interested in Alford.

Potential jumping ship HM:
- Not really excited for Boynton or Bobby Hurley. I think they’d be upgrades but not the answer we are looking for. Could they win at decent level here? Probably.

Assistant coach:
- Kimani Young and Brandin Knight are hot names with local connections. Not sure if there are any others. It did work really well for Kansas State. But can we hand it over to a guy who’s never ran a program before in the state we are in?

To amplify my point about coaches being a crapshoot, I don't think anyone questioned Oklahoma's hiring of Moser. But he is so far 31-25, and 9-17 in the Big 12 in his two seasons there. Did he suddenly stop being able to recruit and coach? I don't think so.

And the fan base is so happy about his impending departure, saying he was a "bad fit."

In general agreement with most of this. Langel already lost a game in conference this year so he's not going undefeated but yeah the point still stands. Wouldn't be surprised if he's who Syracuse is eyeing for when ole Jimmy finally calls it quits.

Holtmann would be an absolute home run if he would become available but highly doubt he'd stoop so low and come here. I'm definitely of the Mack > Turg belief and do think Mack kind of makes mutual sense here.

Bobby Hurley would have almost as frustrating a tenure as anybody, he is the epitome of enraging mediocrity. Given how he was the #1 choice last time around and his seat is warming up at ASU have to think he'll be in the mix.

We should all be prepared to be disappointed with the next hire! After all this is the University of mediocrity In every way And it all stems from the powers to be who are running this mom & pop operation! Our only hope is that Father Shanley has the chones to pull the trigger!

A 1 point loss on the road vs American?? Get Langel off my list!

Shot in the dark here but Ron Hunter? Has won everywhere he has been. Most if not all difficult places to win too (IUPUI, GA State, Tulane).

I think you can tell I'm a Becker guy, because I know he can coach. It's only half of it but half a loaf is better than none. If a guy like Becker kept a guy like Van Macon around I would have felt pretty good about it all five years ago. But with free transfers and NIL, how does he get anyone to toss needed money at this mess? I have no idea. I don't like Langel at all because I think he brings the same issues Becker would bring and he has not had near the same level of career success at the lower level. They both started in 2011. Langel's career conference record in the Patriot League - .607. Becker in the America East - .837. Pikiel was .606 but I will say he inherited a mess and Becker inherited a strong program. Still .837 is .837. And also, I saw almost every game Stonybrook played against Vermont on TV when the two coached against each other and what you saw was two really well coached teams. But I'm not related to Becker and I will prove it by once again saying I wish they would just hire my cousin Rick.

Other than Becker from this list I kind of like Grasso as he won't be boring. And since I have serious doubts any of these guys can turn things around, and this is entertainment after all, Grasso sounds pretty good. Stick around for the handshake lines when we play UCONN!

Claxton could be a great hire, but that would be a very big gamble, as it's not hard to see him failing. There is so little to go on. I don't think the school has anyone, including the AD, who has the chops to sort it out. They won't go that way.

The only retread I could stomach is Mack, which is kind of ironic since I always kind of hated him when he was at Xavier. If you are going to hire Holtman, might as well save some money and go with Langel or Becker who would be cheaper. I don't see Holtman coming here and having quick recruiting chops. As for Mack I seem to remember Goodman saying they were close, and that Mack was totally burnt out and don't expect to see him back anytime soon. If I didn't dream that it's a real red flag.

Hurley used the school just four years ago and helped setup a nationally embarrassing search process that would have landed SJU on Lettermans Top Ten if he hadn't already retired. How can the BOT possibly have a problem with Pitino and NOT Hurley? I don't think he is candidate, and I rather have Wojo than him (if it is just between the two) if those were the options.

Boynton is basically replacing Anderson with Anderson, except he has had even less prior success. Hard pass!

Young and Knight are the Stubblefield hire, NYC version. DePaul still looks like Depaul to me since he got there. Like Claxton they would have the "you never know" factor. I'm not sure I like them better than Van Macon, who they will never hire of course. All that equals another no from me.

For any old movie buffs - deciphering this hire is just like "War Games."

The only right move is not to play.

Also I know these posts about him are unpopular but I still keep thinking Wojo's name is going to be in this mix. Don't shoot the messenger!
God, no! He's one of a handful of opposing players whom I absolutely hated. Want nothing to do with him.

I would counter the Langel argument m with the fact hes won over 80% or conference games last 6 seasons. He inherited a mess but he’s took them to heights they haven’t seen and more importantly has kept it there for a good amount of time now.

I do wonder how interested Becker would be.

Looking for someone with head coaching experience (12+ years) with winning program (avg 20 wins per)---my out of the box is only a short distance away; grew up in Queens Village and is 45 year old. CTK's Joe Arbitello.

Hurley turned us down once and his brother’ team wasn’t even in the conference. This isn’t UNC going after Roy William’s a second time which made sense as he had UNC ties and he actually was a great coach with a national title. I don‘t see them barking up that tree again.

This time me thinks Az St is not going to actually fight to keep him.

Which should tell you how the last 4 years have gone since he "leveraged" his own extension from Az St after SJU courted him the first time.
