Possible Coaching Candidates

Re Robert Jones;

Do you know his 109-36 I think record in MEAC RANKS HIM 4th in country among all coaches conference record !! Over 75 percent over a 9.5 year span …only Few, Becker and one more ahead of him

Chris Beard

With Randy Trew (Chris Beard's still finance) coming more and more out with the fact that he really didn't do anything, I wouldn't give up on Chris Beard. Talk about a home run if he could clear his name. If Im Cragg, and Im still around, and I had half a brain, I would at least inquire.

I think Jones is a solid coach but some context could be helpful here. He inherited a program that went 16-0 in conference the year prior to him taking over and 13-3 the year prior that (including the 2/15 upset over Missouri in the NCAA Tournament). The Head Coach that did go 29-3 in his final two years at Norfolk ended up getting fired from FIU after 5 under .500 seasons and is now an Assistant at Fordham.

I think it's quite possible Jones has a bright future but Norfolk is the easiest school to win at in that conference. They haven't had a losing record in conference since 1998.

I don't know much about Jones other than what's online (I never watch the MEAC), but his record is excellent. Very few MEAC teams even have winning records at all.

We've seen plenty of guys come in and F up a good situation. So kudos to Jones for keeping the train rolling.

They have NEVER had a losing record in that conference!

Of course.

But for SJU if they were to pursue Boynton it sure would look better if he was coming off a solid NCAA year. If he tanks here and they fail to make the NCAA that is a double edge sword, yeah it may make Ok St less eager to keep him but it also not exactly wow the pants off of SJU fans for going after him.

Shaka was coming off a year in which Texas got a 3 seed in the NCAA's, that means they were a top 12 team in the country according to the committee.
Especially given the fact that OSU has benefitted from access to some big donors (T Boone Pickens for one)

My choices by category:

1)Best overall hire-Rick Pitino
2)Go route of high major coach recently fired-Mark Turgeon. Consolation Chris Mack.
3)Current non P6 coach-Mike Rhoades VCU
4)Current P6 coach with modest numbers but maybe high upside-Mike Boynton-OSU

Chances are SJU gets none of the above and they end up with someone we never mentioned and we are back here in 4 years anyway...lol

If these are real suggestions, they are awful. If this is comedy . . . it's also awful.
I know he was fired from UCLA (after 13 games) but he did lead them to 4 NCAA tournaments in 5 full seasons. Has lead 4 different teams to the tournament and has won 65% of the games he has coached. If Slick Rick is out of the equation I don’t think we would find someone much better.

He also left Iowa because he knew he was getting fired by the following season at most.

And everyone leads UCLA to the tournament. They are a super appealing destination for kids.

This is St John's of 2023 not of 1985. Our last coaching search was a national embarrassment and the program is in worse shape now than it was then.

Our options will be limited to guys with big red flags next to their names. Whether it be guys that were fired from the last job (Mack, Turgeon), mid-major guys with no experience at the power conference level (Langel, Rhoades, Grasso), Assistants with no head coaching experience (Kimani Young?), or power conference coaches that haven't had a ton of success yet (Boynton).

Except for one guy. There's only one guy that would possibly be interested in this job that has had major success at every single college he's been to. A guy that's won two national championships and been to 4 other final 4s. A guy that has maybe the best college coaching resume of the past half century short of John Wooden.

That guy might want to come here and we'd say no? We'd turn that guy down to go for another retread or an unproven young guy? Not only that but if we turn him down he might go to one of our biggest rivals and throw it in our face when he's got them as a second weekend threat while we're fighting with DePaul to get out of the Big East dumpster every year.

Hire Pitino.
