Possible Coaching Candidates

Cmon. Texas isn't doing that when there's maybe only 10 guys currently in college that say no to them. Calipari isn't going anywhere there and if so Kentucky can basically pick anybody they want.
Lots of these schools could offer more than St. John’s:

I know he was fired from UCLA (after 13 games) but he did lead them to 4 NCAA tournaments in 5 full seasons. Has lead 4 different teams to the tournament and has won 65% of the games he has coached. If Slick Rick is out of the equation I don’t think we would find someone much better.
I could be 100% wrong about this, but I very much doubt our next hire is going to be a big name hire. Whether it is Pitino, Donovan, Alford or whatever high profile name you want to insert, those type of guys are not the candidates who are likely going to gravitate to come here. I understand that in Pitino's case he might be looking for a resurrection, but his name has been floated around our openings for the last twenty years (read from the link below) and has never opted to come here.

My thinking is to find a guy at a lower level that is on the way up, that has turned a losing program into a consistent winner and would see this job as a real opportunity to achieve the same things in a power conference. Getting us back to a place where we are able to consistently finish at 500 or above in conference, get a legitimate invite (not a play-in game) to the tournament and perhaps win a game in tournament for the first time since the year 2000 would be a huge deal for us at this point. There are coaches out there who could possibly fit that profile and get it done. It would mean another rebuild and for us fans to have the patience to watch us progress over a few years. I certainly can understand why people would not have the stomach for this approach after so many years of frustration. That said, I think looking for a quick fix to this situation, probably would just end up in more failure.

Our search is doomed from the start if the powers that be consider Alford a high-profile name. His name should not be anywhere near a list for a school that cannot afford to screw up their next hire.

I think my point is that we should not be looking at guys who have resumes from power conferences. Alford had a significant number of years at both Iowa and UCLA. SJU would be a definite step down from either of those two jobs.

We need to look at guys who are on the way up. Ed Cooley came from (Fairfield), Jay Wright came from (Hofstra) and Steve Pikiell came from (Stonybrook). At the time of their hires at (Providence, Villanova and Rutgers) these were mid-major coaches who were not the sexy power conference hires. However they had done well at their lower-level schools and really lifted their new power conference programs up after they got their higher level opportunities.

In addition to many other things, getting someone on the way up is a way to be more cost effective than bringing in someone who has power conference jobs on their resume. If Anderson's buyout is a financial concern then getting someone from a lower level on their way up will likely be a more cost effective approach for the next hire.

If Ohio State does something stupid and fires Chris Holtmann this off-season we’d be stupid not to kick the tires on that one just because we’ve chosen to go down the mid-major route

If St John’s cannot land Pitino - the only elite coach on the planet right now who would even consider coming here- then Anderson should stay.

I want to see Cragg pay the price for his gross incompetence in extending CMA - a guy who had just been fired from his previous job- after only 2 years. I want to see Cragg suffer the consequences of his ineptitude.

Cragg created this mess, he deserves to choke on it.

this hot seat report includes coaches at Oregon State (Tinkle) and Georgia Tech (Pastner) who won conference championships and made the NCAA tournament in 2021. It is very hard to stay on top for long and keep the fan base happy.

Ostensibly, their recent success could be viewed as better than CMA's resume when he was hired. Would anyone think they would be slam dunk successes?

My point is that the choice between an experienced "retread" with some success or an up and comer is very hard to make and there's no guarantee you get it right. The SJU administration has to decide if we are trending in the right direction with CMA to make a change. While in some respects I think the program is, if they look solely at the results in the BE, a change is due.
