Orlando Sanchez

I feel horrible for thE kid!! Heard nothing but good things..... Where does this leave us next year with ships?

So no one finds it just a wee bit unusual that we have not heard a word from St. John's on this players' eligibility issue?
The urban legend will say he was the best player in practices, a sure fire NBA draft pick (even though he does not appear on any scouts reports), yada, yada.
Since Lavin and cohorts knew since the Fall there was a slim to no chance of Sanchez qualifying and few big man prospects in 2013, this odd gamble basically made us very small and with no depth up front. If we do not sign Lawrence, this was an insurance move for a staff that may have gone a little soft on the recruiting trail this year.

The whole administration should be relieved of their duties.

Wow a post without mentioning God's Gift name. Kudos.

Really? Where would you start???
As you are famous for saying..."pleas provide the link" when you hear something official.

As far as the NCAA, they are not an invisible body. They have a face and we are obviously not welcome.

I tend to agree with you, however, before we hang them from their short hairs, lets see how this plays out completely.

Anyone know if Orlando would be eligible at an NAIA school? Just thinking if a college degree is also part of his dream.

It doesn't happen often, but as is oft said, the NBA will FIND talent, wherever it plays. The NAIA has sent many players over the years to the NBA. Dennis Rodman (SE OK State), Nate Archibald (Alcorn State), Jack Sikma (Illinois Wesleyan), Terry Porter (Wisconsin Stevens-Point), Lloyd (World B.) Free, ML Carr and Bob Kauffman (Guilford), Rick Mahorn (Hampton), Bob Love (Southern-Baton Rouge), Sedale Threatt (WV State), Robert Whaley (Walsh), Slick Watts (Xavier of Louisiana). Elmore Smith and Travis Grant (Kentucky State). Robert Reid (St. Marys of Texas), Eddie Wilkens and John Drew (Gardner-Webb), Greg Sutton (Oral Roberts), Purvis Short (Jackson State), .

In the Days before the "NCAA Monopoly" that list includes Willis Reed of Grambiling, Zelmo Beatty of Prarie View A&M, Maurice Stokes (St. Francis), Verne Mikkelson (Hamine), Luke Jackson (Pan American), - and a pretty good Knicks backcourt of Earl Monroe (Winston-Salem) and Dick Barnett (Tennessee A&I)....

And those are just the "Name" guys. There are dozens of others who reached the Leauge: the Delmer Beshores of the NBA...

Most played in the NAIA because of poor scouting by the big boys (especially in the pre-AAU days), but many played NAIA because of problems with the NCAA...

The only, and last announcement, ever made about Orlando Sanchez was November 3rd, 2012.  Any other comments were in answer to reporters' inquiries.  For those scratching their heads when we played Sonoma with only 7 scholarship players (eerily reminiscent of the year before), quoted below was the spin.  We have been spinning our wheels ever since.
My feeling is the same source that used the 7-10 day expected ruling date back then is the same source that used the 7-10 day period over a week ago.
They were right both times.

St. John’s Duo Awaiting Eligibility Rulings, Two Others May Redshirt (UPDATED)
November 3rd, 2012 5:19 pm
NEW YORK — The St. John’s basketball roster is in a major state of flux.

Two members of the Johnnies’ heralded recruiting class — Orlando Sanchez, a 6-foot-9 forward (pictured), and Marc Antoine-Bourgault, a 6-6 swingman — are awaiting “separate eligibility rulings from the NCAA regarding classification,” St. John’s announced before the team’s 73-55 exhibition victory over Sonoma State at Carnesecca Arena.

In the meantime, head coach Steve Lavin said he’s considering redshirting both senior forward God’sgift Achiuwa and freshman wing Felix Balamou.

All four players sat on the St. John’s bench during a game in which Lavin used only seven scholarship players.

Sources said St. John’s could learn the results for Sanchez and Bourgault within a week to 10 days, and that they expect both to be fully cleared to play this season. Sanchez is 24 years old and his eligibility questions stem in part from his age.

I'm sure he was being sarcastic.

EDIT: I just saw Moose's reply to this post.

As with the Manti saga, the Sanchez saga seems to have way more questions than answers. Here's one question I have: The kid(I use that term loosely) is 24 years old and spent the last 2 years at a JC. What did he do between the ages of 18(when he should have graduated HS) and 22? Anyone know?

Based on the info reportedly being asked for, he dropped out high school to support the family after his parents deaths, then returned to get his high school diploma, then on to JC.

It's apparent the NCAA never saw the film Necessary Roughness. :)

I vote for a firing squad.

Moose indicated his way to get even was to start boycotting games because of the low quality of play and the high cost of attending those MSG games........then again...maybe he was being sarcastic. I was being critical.

Thanks CR. In light of the family's financial difficulties, any idea why he's not playing professionally yet? Based on the reports from those that have seen him, it seems he's got the skills to be getting paid to play somewhere.

Sanchez is the most "mysterious" player ever to enroll at SJ as a BB player. Sanchez was good enough to make the Dominican National Team and Calipari showed an interest but he backed off. Maybe he did not want to get burned twice with a foreign player.
Personally, I think the NCAA has questioned the age of foreign players for many years now and applies a very strict scrutiny to their papers.
Ever since Danny Almonte and the Dominican Little League scandal, DR players have had to pass a stricter acid test since in the DR (and Nigeria, for that matter), falsification of documents is as easy as buying a Gucci on Canal Street.
Perhaps we may never know the truth.

Boycotting? Wrong word choice.
Its a royal pain the ass to make a game from Stamford CT after a day of work. So weekday games I'm not gonna bend over backwards trying to get to MSG. Just not worth it.

In the middle of the Orlando wait I was watching an old time sports report and there was Marty Glickman's voice. For those of you who don't know his pre-broadcasting history, he was a world class sprinter of Jewish descent and on the 1936 US team for the Berlin Olympics (I think as part of the 4 X !00 relay team). When the Fuehrer asked that the Jew be excluded from the team, Avery Brundage, head of the US Olympic Committee agreed. This memory of pond scum leaders destroying sport for their own comfort does not get surfaced very often but the NCAA in dealing with Orlando Sanchez makes me think of 1936 and old Excess Sewage himself.
