“@LennyVangilder: Buried in Raftery to Fox Sports 1 announcement: new Big East will open league play with 5-game marathon on New Year's Eve.”
“@LennyVangilder: In order: St. John's at Xavier, Seton Hall at Providence, DePaul at Georgetown, Villanova at Butler, Marquette at Creighton.”
The 3 new kids on the block get a home game, hmmm. ; )
It's easy to see why. The home teams in these games are all ones that don't have NBA/NHL conflicts in their home arenas (The Boston Bruins have a minor league team play at DDC, but I believe the Friars have first rights). So, the league could go ahead with this announcement right now, given the locations. Only Depaul is a "non-conflict" team opening on the road.
So, if the league wants to do this every year, and make the announcement around this time, we will likely never start the conference season at home. However, that is the way I prefer it. If you open at home, you have to win that first game. There's enough of a circus going on already, so opening on the road relieves a bit of the pressure, IMO. It's great if you can win it, but it's not the "must-win" that a home opener would be.
