Official 2013-2014 Schedule Thread

Having less conference opponents gives us a lot more flexibility with who we schedule for non conference games. I wouldn't be surprised if Lavin set up another west coast trip.

Conference schedule will still be 18 games in 13/14. Home/Away against each of the other nine teams in the conference.

Would consider ohio state, arizona st if refs non big ten,non pac ten.....and have h/h.....also,rutgers..

Rutgers? Are you serious?

They bring absolutely ZERO. I wish SJU would not have scheduled Syracuse any longer anfter they left the conference. But atleast Syracuse is a major program. Rutgers is a piece of crap program. Scheduling Rutgers only helps them. It does nothing to benefit this program.

Screw Rutgers.

I saw a temple guy tweet on twitter that we play each other this up coming year at their place. I dont know who he is and what connections he has but he did tweet it as if he was certain.

Maybe he thinks Temple is still joining the Big East.

I suspect Bob Barker is a Rutgers grad, or lives within walking distance of their arena. Or maybe just crazy.

Does anyone know how these guarantee games work? I see Kentucky is offering, along with Eastern Michigan, a 130K guarantee but have no idea what's involved.

Kentucky is buying a "guaranteed" win by offering a substantial amount of money to a "relatively poor" small D-1 school to come to Lexington and take a beatiing
It's a win-win for both schools
Kentucky gets a likely W and has a chance to give everybody on their roster a chance to play in front of their fans
The losing team walks away with a bundle of $$$$ they would never get playing anywhere else and gets to play a game in a big time arena in front of a huge crowd

Dear fans; if ky can offer e. mich 130K and get an easy win,why not beat rutgers...H/H,while they are down and out(just lost top scorer to transfer)....sure its nice to play big time schools but only if you can beat them...otherwise,yr rpi falls...I expect next yr to be a 20-25 win year, depending on sched....and ncaa bid; top 20 rating....in order to make an omelet, you have to break a few eggs..

I know it's probably only going to be this way for a year, but I love the fact that the Big East is going to be a true round-robin conference

I think it's going to be a lot more fun for the players too, knowing that if they lose the first game they are going to have another crack at them down the road

We will probably play a bunch of locals. I want Iona, Fordham, and also I think we should play St Joes. What a game that was in the NIT.

I would be surprised if we scheduled a bunch of locals, especially ones tat would be competitive. St. John's, even going as far back to the Looie years would stay away from local teams as we would have nothing to gain and everything to lose. What would we lose you ask? The annual perception that we were the top program in the area if we were to lose.

In one particular case, I remember Looie and staff being quite upset that we had to play an Iona team that featured Jeff Ruland and others. Losing to them at that time diminished our perceived standing in the local basketball community. It is quite unlikely that with Iona's recent success that we will be playing them anytime soon.

Do you NOT want us to be ranked ?!

Screw those teams. I want to see an ooc schedule of Kentucky, Michigan, Cuse, Duke & Indiana

I am just being realistic, you aren't. We schedule locals every year, but instead of St Francis I want to take a step up and play Iona. They have been a tournament team lately and would be good competition. Everybody wants to play a bunch of powerhouses, but try to stay realistic and realize we always play locals, so lets try and play the better ones.

As a fan I want to see a good non-conference opponent at home because that's simply more exciting to attend.
But I can see why a coach would want an easier early-season schedule to build confidence, workout the kinks, and find what rotation works best.
We're not in the MAAC, our rpi will be fine if we play well in our conference games. And if we lose our conference games we don't belong in the tournament anyway.

What I do think is important for the early games is to get a taste of different styles and defenses you'll see later in the year. Play a team that uses mostly a 2-3 zone, play somebody with a deliberate, Princeton-like offense that resembles Georgetown, find a mid major who likes to get out and run ala FGCU last season.
Getting a taste of different opponents will prepare them better for March than a first week game against UNC, IMHO.

Stony Brook, Iona, and Manhattan are the only locals I would want to see on the schedule, and I'm not even sure who they return next season.

We're playing Fordham on 12/7

@JonRothstein: The 2014 MSG Holiday Classic will be on Saturday December 7th. St. John's and Fordham are confirmed for one game. The other is TBD.
