Obekpa Suspended

One way to look at this is that the school acted ethically and with integrity. There are other colleges that would have swept this under the rug or given the player a slap on the wrist (Texas A&M suspended Manziel for 1/2 a game for taking $s for autographs).

I actually give SJU credit for doing the right thing rather than waiting for NCAA to lower the boom.

As for CO, I am all for second chances but how many does this guy get (or deserve)?

In some respects, he is proving he is already NBA material...

Any chance Obekpa and/or Jordan returning next year?

With Jordan it's 50/50. Does he take his chances and try to get a late 2nd round pick, or does he return with it looking like he can freely chuck up 30 shots a game and get his stock up. We will see. I don't expect obekpa back at this point but I said the same at this time last year so we will see

Jack, If he's back and Chris is probably 100% gone, He'll be the only one from the first six from this year. For what reason would he come back, and I'm not even joking.
If he comes back next year, here the starting lineup I'm guessing: Jordan PG, Sampson SG (pretty good, but then), Joey C, Amar PF, ??? SF. Will Adonis be able to play some minutes?

Doughty I'm guess would be the sixth. It will be horrible next year, so seriously why would RJ return?

I think Joey is gone.

Well a free trip to Hawaii, easily 20 PPG, Big East all first team and probably a risen draft stock. That's why. But I still think he might bolt for reasons you said and also the lure of cash

Whether they admit it or not, the committee always tries to create interesting matchups. Manhattan possibly facunk Kentucky is one. SJU/Duke is another (assuming we get past SDSU). If I check the brackets, I'm sure I can point to a few others. It isn't a conspiracy. Just trying to create excitement.

Is there one media report confirming the suspicions here? Whether true or not, there has been more drama in Lavin's 5 years than Looie's entire career. Maybe some will blame it on the internet and the 24 hour news cycle exposing things that would have stayed quiet during Looie's time. Sure, stuff happened under Boeheim, Calhoun and other hall of fame coaches. It just seems a little bit too much drama than we are used to at SJU. I thought that would have ended with Pittsburgh. Maybe there just isn't enough discipline here.

I was pretty young, but if only a small percentage of things are true that I've heard about the players in the 80's, from people that went to school with them, then it was actually a lot worse, it just wasn't made public.

The media wasn't what is now back then. No social media to spread things in seconds like wild fire. The NCAA was also looser.

We now live in a different era.

Does anyone know if there is a mandatory suspension for Obekpa's misconduct that SJU has in writing? Point being, SJU could have suspended him for a week and have him available against Duke if they win Friday. I know many fans are done with him, but to have a chance to be competative with Duke, we need him.

I don't get the 2 weeks. At that rate just say it's for the rest of the season and really make it look like you dropped the hammer on him hard. So, I'm assuming there is some sort of guideline already spelled out that Lavin had to follow. He must have been beyond POd!!

Yes, I know the school is now extra sensitive since our issues in the past and they are always going to go the tough route ahead of time in order to keep the NCAA off of their back. But, this 2 week suspension is a little odd to me.

Does this all but seal it, that Obekpa is gone after the season?

I wouldn't say the door is completely closed, but close.

I think it does. No matter what he did, from his perspective, he probably feels he didn't deserve a suspension. Now especially. I think CO is gone after this season.

Good effin' riddance! This kid was a black eye on the program. And those of you who blame Lavin for this are simply, wrong. Let's face it people, the hopes that SJU will one day regain it's prominence and be the jewel of NYC are gone. It's not anyone's fault. We were never going to be a Kentucky or a Louisville, or sadly, a U Conn. Best hope is in hiring a guy like Cleuss and hope for an occasional great year.

There's a lot of questions that need asking by our local reporters. Many players on rosters are smoking pot. There are 800 young men going into this tournament.

I think the administration needs to decide where and what they want this program to be: either a nice, clean program that will have a good year every once in a while, and maybe even make the occasional sweet-16 run, or a legit contender that will be in the national discussion each and every year. In today's sports world, I don't believe you can have it both ways. Manziel got only a 1/2 game. Why? Because his university understood his importance to the football program and his school.

The administration has some serious decisions to make, and I think those decisions are coming sooner rather than later. What do they want this program to be?

Not sure if this was his first or second positive test.

The thing I am having a hard time with is you are telling me of the 68 teams and roughly 1020 players Obekpa is the only guy that smokes weed?, Or got caught? Is tested?

Better masking coaching? :) Do agree man, strange.

From reading the last couple of posts, I'm getting the impression that "just because everyone else is doing it, makes it okay."

That's nonsense. I'm not judging him, but he couldn't wait until the season was over, if he needed to get high that bad?

What pisses me off most about this is we'll NEVER KNOW how far we could go with a full team. We know we're capable of beating Duke, Georgetown, and Gonzaga. But without CO? This has really deflated my hype. Why is he the ONLY PLAYER in the nation who had this positive test? I find that impossible to believe. Maybe our school is just the only one stupid enough to report it.

Anyways, on to Friday. Does anyone remember which games we played this year without him?

W/O obekpa:

He fouled out against Gonzaga with us down double digits, we proceeded to come back

He missed game against Creighton at MSG. We destroyed Creighton that day

He missed our win against DePaul, where DLo grabbed 10 boards and Dom grabbed 11, Amar had 4 boards

And then of course he missed the nova game
