Obekpa Suspended

Obekpa, on multiple occasions, has demonstrated a Clinton-like disregard for the normal rules that apply to everyone else. Eg- refusing to enter the BET game last year, throwing the ball against the Humbolt state backboard this year to pad his rebound stats , assaulting a hapless Butler player, etc.

Well, hope he's happy now, because he's screwed his teammates and set his draft prospects back significantly. And hope the door doesn't hit him on the way out.

Picture CO in a blonde wig and a blue dress.

Blocking those big shots and throwing my elbows
Lighting up fat ones and missing some free throws
Rocking the short shorts and giving goofy grins
These are a few of my favorite things

Clinton-like? Did Obekpa get a BJ?

I believe it was just a J and unlike Clinton he inhaled.

I've lost the ability to defend Chris both on the court and now off of it. You all can debate how much of this falls on the head coach, but in my opinion Chris cost himself an opportunity of a lifetime, and that's his problem

Unfortunately, it's also a problem for his teammates.

If this was Villanova GTown or PC would the jokes and wiseass comments be flying on this board?

Ah, no. They would be flying on the fan boards of Villanova, Georgetown and Providence. We would be reveling in their misfortune, especially if it was Georgetown.
As for wiseass comments, welcome back from your Twitter assaults on Lavin. How is your best pal buddy Ricky Smith Baldi? He is pushing hard to screw St. John's by recommending to Zach that we hire Mad Max Masiello who falsified his college transcript. That should help with getting ineligible players qualified. Nothing like learning from a master forger.
Finally, how is master wisecracker pops? Still friends with master recruiter Mike Jarvis who recruited female abusers, drug users, crack dealers and other malcreants while writing motivational books?
Would wise ass comments he makes concerning Tony Chiles be considered funny to you more than what we say here on redmen.com? Do you think calling people a phony #TonyBaloney qualifies as humor? What about accusing him of recruiting "alleged" rapist but never charged Dominic Artis or BB gunslinger Keith Thomas? Is that funny?
Yes, some of us are wise asses because we grew up around wise guys but don't come around here to pontificate about wise asses when you belong to a different crew of wise asses. Respect our turf and we will respect yours.
Respect.

I'm not scanning through 32 pages, he got suspended for weed?

I'm not a Lavin apologist, but how is this his fault? If this is true, this bozo goes out and gets high before his (probable) only NCAA Tournament?? What the eff was/is he thinking?

Was the Pittsburgh strip club incident at least partly Jarvis' fault?
This is what it's come to? It's not Obekpa's fault? He smoked the weed. It was an instant gratification move on his part. I'm assuming there was no gun to his head and considering he's the only one suspended, he didn't puff it with anyone else on the team.

I wouldn't miss Lavin one bit, but blaming him for this is a mistake. CO made a stupid decision, one he'll have to live with the rest of his life.

I blame him more for the culture then for the actual act. There's been a pattern.
I don't even know what to say to this. Unless Lavin rolled it and shotgunned into his mouth or packed the bowl and said "smoke this ish or else," I'm not blaming him.

I'm sorry. People have to still be accountable for their own actions. I know society always needs a scapegoat, and God knows Lavin can be blamed for other things (or his inability to coach properly) but this is ALL Obekpa's fault.

He smoked (allegedly, I guess), he knew what was at stake, and he had his greatest game ahead of him and HE STILL DID IT. Not Lavin, OBEKPA did it. He cost himself and, probably, cost the entire team. Selfish. Point blank

Agree with everything you're saying other than to give Lavin a complete pass on this. When my kids-20 and 16 years old-do something stupid I blame them, but I also take partial blame as the parent. So maybe its just my perspective on things.

It's not only what he did, but when he did it. He gets caught doing this in June after school is over, it doesn't bother me so much. Even in April or May after the season is over. But now he has affected the outcome of their season, and that's not forgivable. If any of my kids at that age do something like that, I'm not to blame, and I certainly would hold them fully accountable - not their roommates, friends, teachers, or coaches. Put the blame where blame belongs, and you're a better parent. Take some of the blame, and you're giving them a crutch.

Beast I said pretty much the exact same thing about the timing of this in another post. FWIW while I take some of the blame when my kids screw up, I don't share that with them. If my kid(s) continually screw up then the way I see it I didn't do such a good job as parent. But as I mentioned before, maybe that's just me.

This program manages to ruin my favorite day of the year. Unreal. Gut the team and get rid of this God awful coach.

We will suck next year with or without Lavin time to rip the band aid and start the rebuild. Lavin will leave SJU in worse shape than norm Roberts did when all is said and done and that is sad

Just go steve

Honestly, I think this is the right approach. Just think about something for a minute. Of the starting 5, 3 players have been suspended at some point in their St. John's careers. Pretty pathetic in my eyes.

Yet Lavin gets praised for recruiting "good kids", and its constantly mentioned how much respect they have for him. Ridiculous.

Monte, I understand your frustration; I feel it too. But if smoking pot means you're not a "good kid," then I guess I wasn't a good kid when I was in college (or thereafter). CO may have done something stupid -- really, really stupid -- but it doesn't mean he's a "bad" kid.

But did your use negatively impact teammates, coaches, a university and its fanbase?

I clearly stated that it was a really, really stupid thing to do. And if I were one of the seniors, I'd be forever pissed as hell at him. But it's not like he sexually abused someone or stole laptops (sound familiar?). But to label him as a "bad person" is a bit of a stretch, especially when we hear what goes on in other programs.

Is there one media report confirming the suspicions here? Whether true or not, there has been more drama in Lavin's 5 years than Looie's entire career. Maybe some will blame it on the internet and the 24 hour news cycle exposing things that would have stayed quiet during Looie's time. Sure, stuff happened under Boeheim, Calhoun and other hall of fame coaches. It just seems a little bit too much drama than we are used to at SJU. I thought that would have ended with Pittsburgh. Maybe there just isn't enough discipline here.

I've always said to my kids, half seriously, before you get in the car with someone who is under the influence or feel unsafe in any way, call me. No matter where I am I will come get you or make sure you are safe. On the other hand, I've told them if they ever get arrested, don't call me.

Monte, I understand what you are saying, but as parents we are only one part of our children's environment, and not responsible for their actions. You are responsible for teaching them right from wrong, for providing for them opportunities that perhaps we didn't have, and for disciplining them when they step out of line. If you are a poor example, as in do as I say but not as I do, then, yea are somewhat accountable when they do some of the things you do and it gets them in trouble. But at some point, you're not to blame. I have friends who have worked hard as parents, and have problem children - not their fault. On the other hand, almost all of my social activities revolve around my family. I rarely go to an SJU game without someone in my family, and that's the best part of it for me.

Redken I was only referencing the suspensions of 3 of the starting 5. Many on here have tried to portray Lavin as some sort of Fr. Flanagan figure. I don't personally think that he's got quite the handle on these kids that some others do. I did not mean to suggest that even CO was a "bad kid". As I said earlier, I've done far worse. FWIW I like every kid on this team. I have defended Sheed and D'Lo a lot in the past when they've had issues.

Maybe so, but they'll be in Charlotte, he'll have to think about it from home

I wouldn't impugn someone way after the fact but I know some pretty prominent players who had substance problems while at SJU, and even one who was seen selling drugs on a street corner. It's not a Lavin problem, or a Looie problem - but it IS a problem.

I was thinking more of Hillary - "I don't need your stinkin' email system"- Clinton.

But regardless, Obekpa's shown his true colors one too many times at this point.
