Obekpa Suspended

This will def hurt our seeding. Didn't they use DJ injury as reason we were a 6 or whatever. Seriously what was the rush to announce this unless he now has a built in excuse for not winning a game in tourney

Heard it was mandatory to immediately report to NCAA, what appears to be drug testing issue. Am sure SJU Administration was in the loop quickly.

Do they really have mandatory testing for weed? I don't remember that. Of course I have forgotten most of the things I did in college. But I think I sort of remember one in the very beginning of season, but I might have just peed in a cup for a different reason altogether? I would think if it is mandatory testing the NCAA would have a hard time having enough players.
Guess mandatory reporting is in the equation, have no clue re nature of tests. Time for a "doobie" myself. :)

let's just book a redmen.com trip to denver instead so at least I can try a brownie

MJ change your avatar to "UP IN SMOKE"-

DONE !!! :)

It's crazy that the last three POTUS can admit to smoking pot with no effects on their public lives, but a college kid gets suspended for up to a year by the NCAA, even as states have moved to legalize marijuana.

Absolutely true Beast. But this isn't about whether smoking weed should carry a punishment.
Unfortunately, in the NCAA it does.

If the rule was don't jaywalk or you will miss the NCAA tournament, then the staff and players should make sure as hell that they cross at the light.

Desco, I agree with you. Using your example, at what point does it fall on the player himself not to jaywalk? I think I read in another post where you are a parent. Yes? If so, you know that you can teach your kids all the right things to do and ways to behave, but they are in charge of their own behavior. That's how I feel, about this.

IMHO, this one falls all on CO.

In my opinion there's not much a point to allocating blame.
Most of it falls on Chris, and it should. He has to be personally responsible.
Whether it's 90% his fault, or 75%... is impossible to know, and who cares.

Like in the business world, there are usually multiple reasons for a specific failure.
And in this case, I do think it reflects negatively on coach Lavin. Heading up to the NCAAs he needed to make sure all his guys were inline. Thats part of his job.
But you're right. Chris is most responsible. I don't question that.

(and no, not yet, expecting B) )

I think next year we have no Obekpa, no Sheed, no Lavin, no Sampson.

Hey, I'm fine with that, F Lavin. He needs to get the hell out of here with co.

Either he's gone or I'm gone, but I won't watch them after this year until that jerk is gone.

Get a very good coach, pay him good money, tell him that he'll get a pass for his first 2 years here. Why not take that. A top confident coach knows that he'll get SJU on top.

I know my last couple of posts have been over the top dramatic but I have to let off steam somehow. I'll be less upset tomorrow probably but I think this did it for me with Lavin.

No it's not directly his fault at all but during his reign it's been too much drama and not enough good basketball.

Not showing up for last years NIT
Not showing up for Providence
Not showing up this years NCAAs
Time for Lavin not to show up for next year.
Unfortunately time for him to go!

Maybe CO knows the team thrives on adversity and was trying to help. What a great teammate pulling something to get suspended on the cusp of the seniors 1st tournament. These players just don't give a shi!. Hard to root for them.

If the tournament was so important to them, then maybe the seniors should have worked harder the last four years so that they didn't have to wait til their senior year to 'maybe' get into the tournament.

The first time I was in Portland a few years back, I was walking down the street with a co-worker, when the unmistakable waft of pot was in the air. Two college aged guys were strolling in daylight, and smoking without a care in the world. I ;later learned that Oregon was the first state in the country to decriminalize marijuana use way back in the 70s. Thousands of people with late night munchies relocated to Portland on the spot.

It would be fitting if the committee sent us to Portland for round 1. Perhaps in Portland, CO can get a stay on his suspension, maybe even a trophy.

Well, then, congratulations! For some reason I thought you had children. Now, if I can give you a little unsolicited advice. As difficult as it may seem, do not, I repeat DO NOT, let your child grow up a St. John's fan. He or she will appreciate it later in life when he or she realizes all the heartache and anxiety and stress you will have saved. ;)

You can blame Lavin for the fact that we only have have 6 serviceable players. Any injury, suspension to any of them becomes devastating. To compound things CO is our only Big.

Drama is definitely a good description.

I'm canceling my season tickets after this debacle unless there are significant changes. What a total disgrace! Season ruined again!

I said that about my Jets seats after last season and look what the Jets did this week.

We all have very short memories and love to torture ourselves.

One of the dumbest things he could have done. Once again in the biggest moment of the season Obekpa is a no show. Except now it's the biggest moment in 4 teammates careers. Thanks for nothin.

I can't imagine he decided to try it earlier this week. People know the deal. Everyone is responsible in this instance.

As head coach, Steve Lavin is the CEO of the St John's basketball program
He is ultimately responsible for everything that happens on and off the court
If he recruits kids that get into trouble, cause problems, etc, it's on him
He's had several documented problems with D'Lo, Jordan and Obekpa
He gave scholarships to kids who did not qualify to play (Thomas, ADR, etc)
Assuming we get in tonight, he has 2 NCAA appearances in 5 years
The first appearance was with kids that he did not recruit
We have done poorly in the B.E. tournament and he jokes about it
The team did not show up for the NIT game last year and was embarrassed
These kids were all highly rated and have underachieved at St John's
Would you give this guy an extension?
Not me. In the real world, most companies would fire someone with this track record
I never liked the hire but, regardless, it's time to move on and rebuild AGAIN!!

It's 100% Chris' fault that he got suspended
It's 100% Lavin's fault that he recruits knuckleheads

No matter what his teammates may say in public, i can tell you that they're pissed as hell at CO. The player that told me a couple hours ago that it was weed also told me that in public they aren't gunna throw him under the bus however in private they are steaming.

Maybe CO thought St. John;s was in the island of Jamaica, and not Queens.

This all explains the 500 boxes of Oreos hidden under his old regulation size shorts. :)
