Obekpa Suspended

5 years to be finalized in April per the #1 guru lol

Do you know anyone with drug or alcohol problems? I know some, including a few on this board. Should their bosses be fired for that, or parents? Just a thought. Think hard.

So do I Beast, and on that subject, no, I don't think anyone should be punished for using weed. Criminally, administratively, or otherwise.

But, this team had very high expectations for themselves this season.
It's their leader's job to instill the importance of their mission. Not to sound overly dramatic.

"We want to accomplish something this season guys, that means everyone gets their ass to class, and no weed or drinking till May".
Coach is their chaperone during the season, some of this falls on him.
Also, as has been mentioned, he's put up with Obekpas crap for awhile now and didn't cut him lose or recruit over him.

I think he should be fired for the overall body of work.

Maybe instead of singling me out here u should go to the obekpa suspended thread and go after some of the posters who are slamming him because that I didn't do.....

t's not forget to slam Obekpa for being an absolutely gigantic piece of garbage for doing whatever he did to get suspended on the eve of the most important day of his college basketball career.

Avon,

I've defended your right to objectively criticize the body of work and say SJU should cut ties and move on. However, I don't see how CO's dumbass move here qualifies as a negative on Lavin's body of work.

It's crazy that the last three POTUS can admit to smoking pot with no effects on their public lives, but a college kid gets suspended for up to a year by the NCAA, even as states have moved to legalize marijuana.

This will def hurt our seeding. Didn't they use DJ injury as reason we were a 6 or whatever. Seriously what was the rush to announce this unless he now has a built in excuse for not winning a game in tourney

Heard it was mandatory to immediately report to NCAA, what appears to be drug testing issue. Am sure SJU Administration was in the loop quickly.

Do they really have mandatory testing for weed? I don't remember that. Of course I have forgotten most of the things I did in college. But I think I sort of remember one in the very beginning of season, but I might have just peed in a cup for a different reason altogether? I would think if it is mandatory testing the NCAA would have a hard time having enough players.

Every athlete has to get tested before competing in an NCAA championship event.

Ok that explains why I don't recall ever being suspended.
Are they surprise tests? Because Golden Seal Tea did wonders if memory serves.
AT LEAST WE NOW KNOW WHY OBEKPA IS ALWAYS GRINNING

lol
I just said the same thing on JJ.
Everybody knows you buy the juice at GNC and it masks your piss.
Now, if youre into something "harder" than weed, you're in trouble. But the bottle from Vitamin World prevents most of the world from failing a piss test for weed.

I'm pretty sure they can detect masking agents now

It has been awhile Connor. But I thought that tea, or whatever it is, still worked.
I thought it was hair testing was how people got caught nowadays.

You could be right. Been a long time since I was tested for a job interview.

Tea cleanses the system but need a day. It is used for people who diet and do a cleanse or whatever you call it. My first job out of College I had to use it and it worked. Stopped smoking a long time ago so I can't tell you what works now.

This has put me over the edge regarding Lavin. I can't take this anymore. I am so done.

and exactly why is this lavins fault?
he recruited him

Just like a boss gets the blame for stuff that happens on his watch with employees

I don't care what happened. How many of the other teams in the field does this happen to today

Mike, believe me, I feel your frustration. But who knows? This may have already happened at a Duke, UNC or UCONN caliber program. But don't kid yourself. Those coaches would have never suspended their player.

Sorry if this has already been posted.....but Duke kicked a major player off their team earlier this year....so yes, those coaches would do the same

For the record not even because of this but I think Marijuana should be legalized. ( And I don't even smoke it ) but nonetheless we need to go the way of colorado in this country

Absolutely true Beast. But this isn't about whether smoking weed should carry a punishment.
Unfortunately, in the NCAA it does.

If the rule was don't jaywalk or you will miss the NCAA tournament, then the staff and players should make sure as hell that they cross at the light.

So if an employee gets a DUI or breaks some other law on his own time, is that also the fault of his boss?

What do you want Lavin to do...keep an eye on these kids 24/7?

Listen enough is enough of your stupid ass devils advocate arguments jumbo.

Lavin is a sh*tty game coach. Everyone knows that. Lavins recruiting last two years has been terrible. Everyone knows that. So the argument for Lavin is one word: stability. That's the one thing they all argue when arguing for Lavin. He gives us stability.

NO HE DOESNT! Stability is not recruiting kids who can't keep themselves from getting suspended. Stability is not constructing a roster that will completely turnover every four years with no body sticking around. That's not stability. Idgaf how annoying the guy was in college, get bobby Hurley to come down from buffalo and pay him to try and fix this mess. I'm so done with this guy.

On one hand, I can't believe it. On the other hand, we all should have predicted it.

Look, I am sure this is not directly Steve Lavin's fault. I also know he feels strongly about these seniors and would not have suspended Chris unless he had to.

That said, haven't we had enough now? Can we be done with the recurring problems that prevail within the culture Lavin has created? Think about the ineligible players, countless suspensions, ridiculous line-ups, head-scratching time-outs, significant drop in recruiting, embarrassing post-game quotes, non-existent half-court offense, and the extreme unbalanced roster.

Here is my proposal. I would like to see us strike swiftly for Bobby Hurley, by doing the following:

1. Inform Steve Lavin that he will not receive a contract extension.
2. Offer him a $1 million buyout.
3. Offer Bobby Hurley a 5-year contract with first year compensation of $1 million. The remaining four years would be at $2 million per.

*Even in year one, Bobby would be making more than double his current salary.

@NewBigEastConf: Chris Obepka has dropped those short shorts and taken a dump on the #sjubb program. He has been suspended by Lavin for two weeks. #BigEast

Guess mandatory reporting is in the equation, have no clue re nature of tests. Time for a "doobie" myself. :)

let's just book a redmen.com trip to denver instead so at least I can try a brownie

it's not just one thing. way too many things keep happening with our recruits and players. The overall state of things falls on the person in charge. And I've been a Lavin supporter

Again I don't see this happening to any other teams today. Something stinks here and it's not just the smell of weed from Obekpa's room

Desco, I agree with you. Using your example, at what point does it fall on the player himself not to jaywalk? I think I read in another post where you are a parent. Yes? If so, you know that you can teach your kids all the right things to do and ways to behave, but they are in charge of their own behavior. That's how I feel, about this.

IMHO, this one falls all on CO.

Lavin gets all the credit in the world for straightening out Harrison. Why is it out of line to call him out for coddling Obekpa?

One of the dumbest things he could have done. Once again in the biggest moment of the season Obekpa is a no show. Except now it's the biggest moment in 4 teammates careers. Thanks for nothin.

1. It is a bad reflection on the team and it's the worst timing possible. I don't smoke pot but I think it should be legal, however there's rules to follow and CO didn't follow them if what's being reported is true.

2. RE the body of work it's just another problem the team is going through under his watch. Not an isolated incident as far as I'm concerned. This is more common at SJU under Lavin whether it's suspensions or kids we are expecting to be key contributors not qualifying or the recruiting of questionable characters. it's like it never ends. What's next?

My comments were just rhetorical. Of course once you know the rules, whatever they are, you don't break them, certainly not at this point in their careers.

To our knowledge, Lavin has been a fairly strict task master. I'm sure the subject of every team meeting over the last month is that the team should be laser focused on the task at hand.

Now, I am going to take a wild guess considering how clannish D1 players are with each other, and speculate that CO isn't the only guy ever to smoke weed on the team this season. But he did get caught, and it's absolutely wrong to deflect any of the blame on his coaches, teammates, laws, etc. The guy singularly just wrecked any chance we had to win a game or two in the tournament. If we do get a bid, and the committee was aware before seeding, then he probably cost us a seeding spot or two

Not being a "goody two shoes", but I don't like the culture of the program at this point either. Eligibility issues, suspensions, etc seem to have reached a tipping point. That said, I have confidence the President can put that in better perspective & make the right decision.
