Obekpa Suspended

1. They still deserve a bid. Stop with the NIT nonsense. Please. We all know my stance on Lavin but these kids worked hard for this and they deserve to see their names called today.

2. Not fair to Chris to speculate on what the suspension is. Bottom line is he is suspended. It's an embarrassment but knowing the details won't change a thing.

3. When Kenyon Martin broke his leg Cincinnati went from the # 1 overall seed to a 2 seed I think. So our seeding can be effected but I was told that we won't be sent to Dayton as I mentioned as a possibility earlier this week.

4. Nail in coffin for Lavin.

In other words, perfect day for you, SJU dances and Lavin gone anyway. Is today your birthday?

Mine was Friday.
But even in my worst mood I would never wish this to happen. And I know Avon is no different.
Can't stand the coach, but with Obekpa there was a chance we could go on a mini-run and win a few games.

This program manages to ruin my favorite day of the year. Unreal. Gut the team and get rid of this God awful coach.

We will suck next year with or without Lavin time to rip the band aid and start the rebuild. Lavin will leave SJU in worse shape than norm Roberts did when all is said and done and that is sad

Just go steve

Honestly, I think this is the right approach. Just think about something for a minute. Of the starting 5, 3 players have been suspended at some point in their St. John's careers. Pretty pathetic in my eyes.
throw in the players that committed but didn't qualify. Not a pretty picture.

utterly ridiculous

This will def hurt our seeding. Didn't they use DJ injury as reason we were a 6 or whatever. Seriously what was the rush to announce this unless he now has a built in excuse for not winning a game in tourney

Heard it was mandatory to immediately report to NCAA, what appears to be drug testing issue. Am sure SJU Administration was in the loop quickly.

Do they really have mandatory testing for weed? I don't remember that. Of course I have forgotten most of the things I did in college. But I think I sort of remember one in the very beginning of season, but I might have just peed in a cup for a different reason altogether? I would think if it is mandatory testing the NCAA would have a hard time having enough players.

if it is like most kids they think they can beat these drug tests and it's out of their system but most of the time they are wrong.

Every athlete has to get tested before competing in an NCAA championship event.

Guess mandatory reporting is in the equation, have no clue re nature of tests.

Avon if Lavin is gone I think the right coach can convince Sampson to come and perhaps others to stay. Who knows. I've learned that nothing is predictable with this freaking program.

I took a day trip so I didn't sit around waiting for the 6 pm selection show. In the car a little while ago, I signed on to redmen.com from my cell phone and saw this thread. Immediately I thought someone resurrected something that was old. I didn't recall when CO had been suspended but it had to be old, right? Not on Selection Sunday? Not on a short handed team already.

Angry beyond belief.

Last year he effectively killed our chances for a win by committing some dumb fouls away from the hoop in the first half, then refusing to go in the second half of a game that could have cinched a bid. Strike one.

Then he says he's leaving, and had to be talked back. Strike 2

Then he takes us out of a win we'd have loved to have with a cheap shot to the head. Strike 3.

Now this.

If he hasn't played his last game for SJU, I don't know what you have to do to be booted from this program.

But in a parallel universe, if this kid wasn't such a cancer, we might be talking about Lavin's Johnnies securing their 3rd bid in 5 seasons. Of course some dumbass here will challenge that and say we weren't going to beat Providence last year with or without CO. Doesn't matter.

Most of us on here care more about SJU winning than CO. He's let down his teammates, the school, and all SJU fans. /////of course he's let down himself, but if he is too damned dumb to worry about that, then I shouldn't worry about him either. Considering his reaction immediately following the cheap shot to the head, he doesn't care too much about winning, the team, or us.

Ridiculous? Still excited about 6 pm? Good for you. I'm not.

Ok that explains why I don't recall ever being suspended.
Are they surprise tests? Because Golden Seal Tea did wonders if memory serves.
AT LEAST WE NOW KNOW WHY OBEKPA IS ALWAYS GRINNING

let's just book a redmen.com trip to denver instead so at least I can try a brownie

I think next year we have no Obekpa, no Sheed, no Lavin, no Sampson.

I agree with all of that except Sampson. I think he can be convinced to stay.

Without the coach that recruited hi?

His options are more limited as time goes bye, and the big reason he was coming here was playing time.
That part hasn't changed.

Plus, as Avon points out the UA connection is strong.

I was pissed off after that blowout against Nova. I was pissed off after that no show against Providence. I thought today, I'd be able to enjoy hearing my school going to the NCAAs. But instead, I'm pissed off yet one more time!

Tony, I am even more pissed than you and obviously other fans are even more pissed than us and no one is more pissed than his teammates. It is a freaking pissing contest!!!!!

I seriously wonder that if the seniors deep down inside are glad that they are about to be done playing for sju.

If it is drugs, then Lavin and SJU did the right thing because the NCAA punishment is a year-long suspension.

Michigan's Mitch McGary turned pro last year because he would have had to sit out this season.

"By failing a test administered by the NCAA, rather than his school, McGary was subject to the draconian Bylaw 18.4.1.5.1, which calls for a player to be "ineligible for a minimum of one calendar year." A second offense, even for just marijuana, results in permanent banishment."
