Obekpa has improved. Maybe not as much as we'd all like, but his rebounding is better, and he showed flashes of a post game before he got hurt.
Granted it was anything ground-breaking, but there's been noticeable improvement from his frosh season.
Has it been enough improvement/development? I don't know. That's debatable. But I wouldn't say he's the same player, hes better.
Since no one seems to know exactly what happened, can't one of the moderators put a question mark after this thread's heading, i.e. "Obekpa refused to play?" or perhaps "Did Obekpa refuse to play?" Until we have proof or confirmation that CO did, in fact, refuse to play, the current heading -- which implies that he did -- is unfair to him and an undeserved bad mark on his character.
I heard from a reliable person that there was some sort of argument on the bench between CO and coaching staff. It's possible that person was speculating or had heard something from a less than reliable source, but I don't believe that to be true. CO played about 3 minutes, no? 1.5 each to start each half? It would be confounding as Providence scored inside that we couldn't use him.
CO should have been back in sooner...his foul trouble hurt us...don't know whether Lavin would have adjusted but we needed to play a bigger lineup (Sampson/Sanchez/Obekpa/Gift)...3 guard lineup was too small...
Unfortunately, I agreed that he had to sit the entire 1st half with 2 fouls, and then sit with the quick #3. But I'm guessing he should have been back by the 12 minute mark, no? Not having him back lends credence to the idea that something happened.
He should have been back when they started playing goddamn volleyball on the offensive side of the ball. That was disgusting to watch. He had three fouls..not four...and the game was sinking fast. What's the point of saving a kid's fouls if the game swells to 17 points with ten minutes left. CO changes the game like few others in the country and he is our best rebounder and post defender. Think they would pull that tip drill with him in there? No way.
Again your hyperbole is amazing. Obekpa has not changed ONE game while at SJU. Name me the team that did not take the ball down low because Obepka was there? The answer is NONE. He can block shots but he intimidates no one. One of the reasons we block so many shots is because the ball gets down low so easily. Our rotations are so bad that even if a shot is blocked the second attempt more times than not is there for the taking. Obekpa is deep into his second year and has still not learned that reaching and playing with his hands does nothing but put him on the bench which is exactly what happened yesterday. HE took himself out of the game not Lavin. In the 2nd half he came out and committed another dumb foul and took a quick uncalled for jumper and hit the pine again. IMO, he would have made no difference had he come back in, it's not like he is a Jayson Williams like rebounder.
Well, we should know relatively quickly if something is up Obepka if his playing time is slashed during our NIT game.

Are we going to start fact checking threads now? The guy said he heard that from someone. Beast said he heard something similar.
I have a hard time believing it too. I'm fairly certain he would want to play, no matter how pissed he might be. But if someone wants to talk about it we don't need to put a question mark on his topic until he proves it with evidence. That's ridiculous.

I guess you mean on TV. I can't imagine many here will be among the hundreds of SJU fans in attendance.

I was just talking about this with another poster. Obviously I'm disappointed with the season, but I'll go to the NIT game(s). You?
It's still SJU basketball. And as frustrating as this season has been, sometimes things just click for a team. You never know what will be a springboard.
When we played them in the NIT last year, did anyone think Virginia was on the verge of winning the ACC and getting a #1 seed?? So who knows. I'll watch/go. But I understand the posters who are too emotional to go now.

I'm kind of doubting that I'll go. Today is a day to decompress, and get this season out of my system. I spend $1200 on season tickets, and probably about another 800 on game tickets for family members and tourney tix, plus usually a RW donation. That doesn't include the LIRR ($16 off peak), and food/drinks at the Garden. Unless we play a game I have interest in, like an Iona, I'm done. I'm not bailing because I'm upset because I'm not very upset - just deflated. I just think the NIT are almost as worthless as pre-conference games vs. bad competition. The games mean little, although I'm guessing that the tourney champion usually does better the next season if they are a younger team.
