NY YANKEES - 2021

Well, I did basically say that, on at least 2 occasions, if not 3 times. Nothing more to say, just enjoy the roll this team is on. Really nice effort across the board tonight against a team playing quite well themselves.

Seattle (Flexen - 10-5, 3.65) at Oakland (Irvin - 9-11, 3.57) - 3:37 PM

Tampa Bay (Rasmussen - 1-1, 3.64) at Philadelphia (Suarez - 5-4, 1.47) - 7:05 PM

White Sox (Cease - 9-6, 4.06) at Toronto (Berrios - 8-6, 3.52) - 7:07 PM

Minnesota (Jax - 3-1, 5.11) at Boston (Houck - 0-3, 3.12) - 7:10 PM

game 125.
nothing wrong with stanton tonight or the last 20 nights.
You can make the case that he's been the second best player on the team this year (behind Judge).

Urshela was in the conversation, but he's been out for the last month.

Math-wise, Stanton is the 2nd best player.  2nd in team in WAR.

Clint Frazier better get going fast - or a new change in scenery.   -1.3 WAR, last on the team.

The pitching WAR is also interesting.

Cole is #1 of course with a WAR of +4.8
and the surprising Montgomery is 2nd at +3.0

First time since 1901 two teams with 9 game winning streaks are facing off.

So weird. One wouldn't think it would have been more than a 100 years for that happen. I guess that shows how rare these streaks are when winning 65% of your games is amazing.

game 126.

I need a day off after this win. Wait, the Yanks are off tomorrow. Great. Odor giveth and taketh. When does Urshela get back? Minor nit pick. Does Judge circle every ground single in CF? Teams have picked up on it and are taking extra bases. Like I said, minor.

I think it’s lack of comfort for Judge playing that position and having to cover more ground. He has such a great and accurate arm but needs to adjust to how different CF is to play. He’s not a traditional CF of course and wouldn’t be there if Hicks was healthy, but with how Voit is going, and Stanton being able to handle the field, I can’t fault them for going with that OF alignment.

They do need to get Chapman back. A Green/Loisaga combo as closer could be fine, but the pen was a real strength earlier in the year and having Chapman in that closet role is the best version.

Judge, Gallo, and Stanton are good outfielders, but if there is a problem, it's that all three are right fielders, basically.

Stanton has always looked more comfortable in right then in left (that's kind of played out over the last month), Gallo can play all three, but is best in right, and putting Judge anywhere but in RF wastes his great arm (less so in center, obviously).

So, they're good outfielders individually, but collectively, maybe not the best.  Kind of like the year we had Sir Dom, Jakaar, and Orlando Sanchez on the team, and they were very similar as players (especially on offense), that it didn't work, especially on offense.

This problem isn't anywhere near as massive as that one was, but it's something to watch out for, down the line.

Wednesday's games of importance:

Tampa Bay (Yarbrough - 7-4, 4.57) at Philadelphia (Wheeler - 10-8, 2.77) - 7:05 PM

White Sox (Giolito - 9-9, 3.77) at Toronto (Ray - 9-5, 2.79) - 7:07 PM

Minnesota (Ober - 1-2, 4.38) at Boston (Pivetta - 9-6, 4.43) - 7:10 PM

In many way Peralta has been as important a pick up as Gallo or Rizzo.  If Chapman doesn't get straightened out I'd as soon see him and Loaisiga vs Green in the closing situations.  Wandy hasn't given up a run in August.

Now to go into Oakland and keep the streak going.

Speaking of streaks:  The Orioles have lost 19 in a row!

choices -  #99 or gardy - whose bat
choices - stanton or gardy - whose bat
choices- gallo (ks, arm, power) or gardy (ks, legs)
i have not seen a play in the outfield that stanton has botched
#99's length and arms and speed makes up for any circle back episodes
while odor eater at third botches plays too often
boone correctly replaces stanton with gardy in late innings
boone also uses wade in the outfield.

boone has quick hook with his pitchers.
abreu struggled (and he has been very good lately) against the braves and boone yanked him
chappy (aka mr agita) struggled against the braves and boone yanked him
boone seldom stays with a struggling pitcher.

the 1985 yanks won the second most games in the al.
the top 4 in the lineup were stars plus 2 Italian Americans plus billy martin was the manager
5 yanks had 19 or more gettys
that was louisiana lightning's finest year
5 guys in pen has eras of 3.21 or lower

HOF caliber year in 85, but I think Gator’s best year was 78.

This is pretty crazy

I believe Willie played regularly at 2b that year, but wasn’t in that particular lineup.

With peak or near peak Henderson, peak Donnie and others, that team’s problem wasn’t offense. After Gator and Rags in the pen, I believe the pitching was short. People forget how many games that group won, because with no WC they didn’t make the playoffs. It wasn’t until later in the 80s the Yanks really started to fall off.  Looking at the roster you can see some of the shortcomings in how Big Stein built rosters, since he was still actively calling the shots. The mid/late 80s are the “what if” generation for me as a Yankee fan (given my age) because we traded so much from a bountiful farm system often chasing bad fits or “name” veterans instead. Just look at some of the arms and young talent the Yanks parted with in that era.
