NY Post Critique

1. WOW.... how times have changed. If you go back and reread the posts on this site entered just 30 to 45 days ago you will see that many posters on Redmen.com accepted Lavin's spin about "new players" playing together and rejected criticism of recruiting efforts by Lavin and his highly paid $taff. Posters on this site predicted NCAA Sweet 16 and Final 4 appearances and posters that criticized Lavin were themselves criticized for question him.

2. Lavin is not stupid. Lavin is a great self promoter. Lavin knows that next year promises to be uglier than this season and he doesn't want to be at StJohns. Lavin knows that his name brand is depreciating by the day. My prediction remains that Lavin has asked his agent to simultaneously negotiate deals with StJohns for a buyout of his contract and to negotiate a deal for his return to television with ESPN, FOX, or some other media.

Even if CO and Jordan were to transfer, wouldn't a senior laden team have to be better? I would think waiting until next year would make more sense if Lavin was contemplating giving up. Next year's team would almost resemble his first and should be able to get them into tourney. If he left after that, he could spin his tenure as successful and he would not be 100% wrong. Would give him more potential opportunities, no. If he left after a 14-19 season or whatever we wind up with he limits any potential future job.
The season after nexr will be a disaster no matter who is coaching and makes sense for him to leave before then. If I were to bet I say he stays another year.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing twice and expecting different results. Well, Lavin has the same players he had last year (plus Sanchez, Jordan and Hooper) and guess what? We've gotten the exact same results. We finished last year 0-5 and we started this year 0-5.

Holding on another year with the same coach and this roster is just asking for more of the same....

I was simply commenting on the a previous quote suggesting Lavin would leave after this season. To me that would be a bad decision on his part

Lavin is not going to get fired, so if he leaves it will be up to him.
Personally I think his coaching has even been worse than his rep. Still unless someone can give me a name of a plausible replacement, if I had a vote, II would give him another year.

Great post - If things don't 180 quickly it makes no sense to spend the money being spent to field mediocrity. The talent is present on this team. 0-5 is not acceptable.
 is how I view the usage of our talent

BTW, Lavin got no questions on job status, team identity, etc - mostly about the Big East, league strength, and varying styles of play.

The season's results speak for themselves, no matter how spun by Lavin supporters or, Steve himself. Despite HS rankings this team has not achieved their potential, individually or as a team.

Now, in addition to losing on the COURT, the ultimate criteria in evaluating a Coach's performance, the Press has started to raise serious questions about Lavin's credibility, recruiting efforts and, seemingly, questioning his desire to continue.. These are serious issues for him and the Program to face.

The amount of smoke coming out of Carnesecca Arena , means that a blazing Fire might erupt at any time.

Incredible, as it may be, the state of our Program right now, is nearly as dire as it was under Roberts.. Sure the players are better but, team results are not there and don't seem likely to change much over the remaining schedule.

And, the scenario here is nearly identical to the last days of Lavin at UCLA...not a pretty scene to survey..

I do believe the likelihood of again searching for a new Coach is possible.

Sunday night I challenged any reporter to have a pair of ball and ask Lavin tough questions, well this isn`t exactly asking Lavin, but atleast Zach put this out there for everyone to read.
TY Zach very much.
Hope if not all then atleast some of the donaters read the article. They`re paying his salary, bet they don`t like it at all.

Who is this Zach guy, and what are his credentials? Sorry, I am not from NY, so I am just curious about who he is.

And also, I hate to break it to ya, but donaters DO NOT pay Lavin's salary, the University does. However, the school may choose to allocate some of the donated money towards his salary. Lavin's salary is not contingent upon the amount of donations they get. Unless he has some weird clause in his contract which states he earns a certain % of donations, if his salary is $1.3M (and I have no idea what his actual salary is), that is what he is going to get, regardless if donations are $5M or $0.

Zach Brazilier, he's the college basketball writer for the NY Post that covers St. John's. He defended Norm for a very long time, so this is somewhat a surprise.

Zach defended Norm? Has he even been around that long? Lenn was our beat writer for the Norm years and I only recall Zach the last few years?

The name of the game for a program like ours is sustainability. We haven't had it in 20 years and we need it. Whether moving on from Lavin is the best thing from the program or not, the fact that we would be looking for a new coach (again) is dissapointing of and within itself.

Villanova has had this type of sustainability. Previously dormant programs like Marquette were a revolving door for a while just like us and were finally able to find it with Crean and maintain it with Buzz. I thought Lavin was going to be this guy for us, and if he isn't we have to get the guy that is.

You are correct. My fault. I guess I just never remember Zach speaking his mind like this before, and assumed he had been a yes man for awhile.. But you're right, he's relatively new.

This is just the beginning ... Lavin is gonna get blown out!!! Him not being around 15 recruits to me is a tell tale sign! I honestly think there is gonna be a change in leadership

@NYPost_Brazille: Lavin sticking to belief team will jell by February. #sjubb

@NYPost_Brazille: "There's been a dramatic difference" in team's play since Georgetown, Lavin said. #sjubb

At least he is consistent.

I have been to 4 games this year at CA and Mary has not been to any of them! Last year she attended every game at CA, at least the games I attended. Could mean nothing, or maybe she knows something!!!

She's been out shopping for her all-expenses paid trip to Maui.

Step up now I guess.

@NYPost_Brazille: Overall message from today was St John's is close to breaking through going on a run. Heard it for a while. We'll see if starts tomorrow

If by dramatic difference he means going from embarrassing ourselves in terms of play and results to just embarrassing ourselves in terms of results then yes, big change.

I honestly feel a run too, teams don't lose EVERY game-in sports things tend to even out.

Hard to get optimistic about a "run" when two road games await after SH. Not exactly "road warriors" to date and Creighton is one of those two. I guess "run" is a relative word.
