Norvel Pelle

Hope Norvel finds peace wherever he goes. Really hoped he'd be the athletic center for us who will thrive in Lavins system

On the bright side I look forward to not reading minute by minute tweets from him on here and the jungle threads

Oh you will still read his tweets......and they will still be about how unhappy and confused he is and how he is having a bad day and how it is too cold in Pennsylvania and how he can't wait to get back to Cali and how enrolling at Riverside Community College was a mistake, etc., etc.

Has nothing to do with the big east..its not like bcs football players know regardless of what happens st Johns will be a place they can play big teams and make the tournament its not like St Johns will go to div 2..

Bottom line though is were in some trouble here and have to rebound somehow in recruting but with most of the good players from 2012 gone this could end up pretty bad..

I follow Pelle on twitter as well and his tweets are enough to be worried about his commitment. I will be happy to un-follow his overactive and depressing twitter. Amir on the other hand is so loyal to #stjbb its refreshing.

Hey guys, a San Diego State fan here. I have also been following Pelle’s tweets very closely, he seems like a very confused man. It almost seems like he wants to love St. Johns, but at the same time really misses California and is homesick.

Some of you may wonder why the guy would even consider SDSU? Our basketball tradition has not been the strongest, but as crazy as it may sound, SDSU has arguably been the best basketball program in California over the last few years and the future looks even brighter. I’m sure you know the story from last year, the team only lost to BYU and Jimmer Fredette during the regular season and then SDSU beat the them easily in the conference tournament. Then we lost in the Sweet 16 to UCONN. We sent our Sophomore star, Kawhi Leonard to the NBA, and lost three other starters. We will still be very competitive this year, but desperately need a big man - particular after one of our transfers expected to contribute this year, Kevin Young, bailed out last minute to go to Kansas. We are still hoping Polee can get a hardship waiver and become eligible for the second half of the season. But Pelle would also be huge get for the team, although I am concerned about his schooling efforts and whether or not he will ever play D1 basketball.

So here is the connection to SDSU. First off, you know about Polee transferring from St. Johns, now at SDSU. Second, we also got a verbal from Spencer Skylar, who played at Price H.S. with Pelle for a while. We are also a top choice for 5-star recruit Isaac Hamilton, who’s brother Jordan just played at Texas and was drafted to the NBA. Isaac and Pelle are close friends because they played on the same AAU team. It is my understanding that Isaac Hamilton, his younger brother Daniel, and Pelle will all be together at the SDSU game against USC tomorrow night.

SDSU already has one of the top recruiting classes for next year and I know these kids are envisioning winning it all if they can get together. Pelle has even been quoted as saying such, but he later denied it. There is also a good chance we get 4-star small forward Winston Shepard and already signed J.J O’Brien from Utah and Matt Shrigley, a local product. We are talking “Fab 5” part two for Steve Fisher and the Aztecs right now. If you want to play in California, SDSU is simply where it is at right now. Seriously, look at the primary competition in the state, it’s UCLA, USC, Stanford, Cal, and St. Marys. Most of those programs have good history but are not meeting expectations right now. Cal is probably the exception this year, although we spanked them on the road last year and get them at home in a couple weeks.

Finally, if you look at other tangibles, San Diego has probably the best weather in the country - forecast is sunny and low 70s this week. But more importantly, the home court environment, including the student section, is second to none. Pelle and Hamilton will experience “The Show” firsthand tomorrow night.

In short, my goal is not to rub salt in the wounds for your loss of Pelle, and to a lesser extent Polee. But do understand that there are a lot of things going on at SDSU right now that many east coast fans may not realize. I think this year’s team will be solid, but next year’s team may be better than last year’s. In the end, I just hope Pelle gets his act together and tries to get an education while competing in D1 ball (hopefully at SDSU). If he has a “one and done” mentality, he will only fail and SJ is better off cutting the rope now versus later.

What exactly is your point here then? To talk-up SDSU after looting a couple of kids from SJU?

If SDSU is what he says it is then what is there need to come and play in the BE. Even a great SDSU is only going to be known in San Diego. If Pelle had stayed at St. John's he would have florished on the biggest stage. I also followed Pelle on Twitter and it did seem like he always wanted to be home.

There is UC-San Diego in La Jolla; ranked in the top 40 academically in America.......and then there is SD State located in the creepy hills and ranked 164 by US News. It has become the UNLV of the Cali State system under Steve Fisher and I can smell the fish stinking from the head all the way in New York City!

Sorry guys, didn't mean to come here and pick a fight or make claims that SDSU is the best school in the country, hope it did not come across that way.

I will say, however, that Steve Fisher is pure class and cannot be compared with UNLV's tactics from years ago. Before Fisher was hired, Tarkanian was very vocal about his interest in coaching at SDSU (in 1992, after his huge run with UNLV). We didn't want anything to do with him and went with a UCLA assistant coach.

They are both california guys so not all the implorable. if they were both from nyc it would be different.
Completely agree with that. As someone mentioned earlier, SDSU gets lots of transfers. Oftentimes they are kids born and raised in Southern California that leave for prestigious national programs. Once they end up living in a completely different environment, they often realize they want to come back to Southern California. It could be a move to the east coast, midwest, etc. Weather may sometimes be a factor, hence the reason I mentioned it in my original post, but also the culture/people can be very different in those cities. Today, every player on our current roster is from California, as well as our upcoming commits.

Not sure if you guys remember a guy named Tony Bland - he was a top player from Los Angeles and went to Syracuse. He was a 6' 5" guard that started as a sophomore for Syracuse on the 1999-2000 Sweet 16 team but wanted to get back to Southern California and ultimately transferred to San Diego State. He was one of the key guy's Fisher obtained to help turn around the prgram and is now an assistant coach for SDSU and is already recruiting very well in the LA area. I'm sure both Polee and Pelle can relate to his personal experience, since they both grew up in LA and also commited to play in New York.

FYI, the year before we hired Fisher, SDSU was 4-22. In Fisher's first year the team was 5-23, but by year three he had enough recruits (including Bland) to get the team to a 20+ year season and an NCAA tournament. Today he has had six straight seasons with 20 or more wins and last year was voted the co-national coach of the year after winning 34 games.

Could you elaborate a little more on SDSU's 'top' recruiting class? Is it for 2012? Neither espn nor rivals has them in their top 25 for recruiting classes. I am just not seeing anything online that would justify you calling it a 'top' recruiting class.....

This discussion is so stupid, bottom line is these "student" athletes are not students, all they are thinking about is the league, Dwayne Pollee did not transfer to be closer to his mother, if that was true he would have received a waiver already like Jones from Iona. He transferred becuase his Dad was unhappy with the way he was being used. His Dad did the same thing transferring from UNLV. His Dad was not happy with the way Lavin was using him. That is why SDST is a popular destination. Fisher is a great recruiter, he is not very disciplined with his players and these athletes love that. Mo Harkless originally committed to UConn but St. John's stole him, it is the way recruiting works. I don't understand it though how JaKarr Sampson comitts to St. Johns and one year later decomitts, WHY? It makes no sense. Wiht Gaithers it is obvious that he is getting a lot of pressure to go to LSU, where he will probably end up.

Shrigley you jest. SDSU has already nailed down a transfer called JJ "Reddick" O'Brien. Perhaps you're not aware that JJ averaged nearly six and a half ppg as a freshmen on last year's impressive 13 win Ute squad. (Did you say Ute? Sorry your honor, 13 win Uthes squad.) He is the jewel around which the Fab 5 Part le deux is being constructed. Along with JJ SDSU has a commit from nationally unranked HS senior Matt Shrigley; think of him as the Ray Jackson of the new Fab 5, since like Jackson it is unlikely that Shrigley will play in the NBA. If SDSU manages to add to that impressive nucleus a mere 5 more 5 star recruits - and as the poster says they already have a "chance" of signing four star recruit Winston "Tastes Good Like A Shooting Guard Should" Salem - then this class is arguably the same as Michigan's. Sure, Michigan's class had 4 of the nation's 10 recruits whereas this class has none of the nation's top 100 recruits, which is why I said arguably.

Have I mentioned the weather? It's beautiful in San Diego this time of year. Sure, most people if they can't think of anything good to say about a school because it's located in a cultural wasteland populated by vapid mellow extroverted assholes in Bermuda shorts they'll talk about how nice the weather is, same way people talk about fat girls having nice personalties, but this is different, because the weather in SoCal is so nice it's like besides having a nice personality she puts out on the first date. Like the OP said, SDSU is simply "where it's at." And that's not just hipster doofus fan boi talk either, that's two turntables and a microphone ontological where it's at.

CLASSIC!

All this means is that our expectations about when (not if) we will be a final four contender again have to be dialed back. I thought it could happen in 2012-2013. Now I have to look at 2013-2014 as the year when that becomes a reality. That is all.

It still could be done next season. It all depends who signs on in the spring.

I am talking about the 2012-2013 class. In addition to Polee and O'Brien, we just received a couple LOIs that are discussed here (Shepard and Shrigley):

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/nov/09/sdsu-expected-signs-two-coveted-recruits/

I believe transfers aren't usually included in the top recruiting class analysis, so we are not getting any credit for Polee or O'Brien. I suppose I should have said things are shaping up to be "one of SDSU's best ever recruiting classes," since we still have two more scholarships to give and things are looking very good there. Pelle may get one of those spots and we have a handful of other four- and five-star guys very interested in the program. We were a final candidate for Deandre Daniels, the #1 recruit in the nation, who ultimately verballed to UCONN.
