NJIT, Sun. Dec. 20, Noon, FS1 & 970 AM

Yep, we're desperate for guards. Can't really be a competitive team with this roster. Should still be able to beat NJIT and Incarnate Word though. Truth is we're a bad team that's playing below it's potential. Really embarrassing weekend. Better days ahead.

Why should we be able to beat NJIT? Because it says St. John's on the uniforms? Because we went to a final four 30 years ago? Because we play in the Big East? How many good teams have we had in the last 10 years? This program is completely rebuilding for the third time in 10 years. We have no PG, no quickness in the back court, and little experience. Forget what the Jersey says. NJIT is a junior and senior filled team with an honorable mention All-American. They are a program that has been improving. We were 1.5 point favorites at home. The oddsmakers get it, but a lot of posters are missing the point.

So you are satisfied with today's performance? We look on target?

Satisfied, no. On target will depend on signing Ahmed and Freudenberg. There is a lot of work to do. Some people must have expected magic. The teams we have lost to have been building up to this for awhile. We are just starting out. Next year, the starting 5 could be Lovett, Ponds, Ahmed, Freudenberg and Sima, with Mussini, Owens and Yakwe getting the bench minutes. Still a young team that will have growing pains. That's what a rebuild is all about. Hard work and patience. Very few fans have it. I get it, but I'm also a realist.

You're right, Ray Morgan. I probably shouldn't have phrased it as " we should" beat these teams. What I meant to imply was that while these are by no means automatic wins, they are winnable games. I don't think you'd disagree with that. It's very possible for this roster, despite it's obvious deficiencies, to beat those two schools. So while I'm not shocked that we had a tough time, I am disappointed by the effort we saw. I don't think that's unreasonable or missing the point. I do think I understand the state of the roster and what the staff is working with and trying to build.

I am disappointed in the team's progress and the inability to adapt during the game. Why did we have 3 timeouts remaining with under a minute to play??? I have to remember that the coaching staff is young in game experience too (save Slice).

Got nothing to say but can't wait for next year.

And I say enjoy the season and the progression of our team. We were left with three benchwarmers who totalled 4 points per game. What the hell did people expect ? We have no pg , a shooting guard learning to play the point , 2 fifth year transfers coming off major injuries , injuries to Felix, Williams and Ellison , and promising freshmen in Yakwe and Sima. Why are people surprised. If you can't be a fan just come back next October 15 th when Ponds and Owens will be joining the returning players which hopefully will include Lovett as a returning player. I just don't understand why people can't accept who we are ?

Seems sort of crazy that we've shot 22 3's so far and Sima has 1 single shot attempt. How can we not get the big guy a few more touches?

Because Mullin and staff are big on the three as is the NBA. Just look at the Warriors , I like this NJIT team, open up the defense buy hitting threes and then backdoor them to death. We saw it about 5 times today. A lot of people have liked the job Jim Engles has done building this program from nothing with some unknown conference affiliation now.

Do you see me killing them? No. I know what they are, you seen me saying to give them a pass this year.
With that said, it still sucks to get smacked by these teams.
But I highly doubt that with Mullin and this staff, that we'll be the youngest team in coll bball ever again.

He has done a really nice job there! They're a smart, disciplined team. Good point and I do like that Mullin is big on the three. I also think it plays to one of our few strengths so I don't mean to complain about us taking a lot of them. I just think that he's a developing freshman who we're hoping will be a big part of this team moving forward. I'm not saying he needs to dominate the ball. Let's just go to him a couple of times. He had 1 shot attempt until the last 5 mins and only finished with 4. Also to be clear I'm not putting that just on Mullin. Doesn't seem like our guards are capable of consistently passing to the interior. Often times by the time we get past half court and in position to run a play we only have 10-15 seconds so we have to take what's available so maybe I'm being a little unfair.

At least 3 times in the first half, Sima had the ball in position to put a 1-on-1 move on his smaller defender. All 3 times, he passed it back out, and we got nothing. He's actually a little too unselfish, if that's possible (or his taped up hand is not strong enough for him to make those moves right now).

Johnson really loves to shoot. Not sure why

To maximize his pro contract in Borneo. Frustrating to watch him, probably more so to play with him.

On target for what exactly? You know the comment about posters missing the point?

Because they chose the wrong profession and are really miracle performing basketball coaches and we went out and hired a bum like Mullin who hasn't figured out that it would all turn around if he would only use those damn times out.

Even without Lovett, they should have won these last two games vs cupcakes. Losing to teams of that caliber followed by losing 18 of 20 conference games is gonna negatively affect recruiting.

Without jumping on this crowded ledge, I must say our defense is a work in progress to be kind. The uncontested back door buckets & the inability to recognize & challenge three point shooters give staff plenty to work on.

All in all, the season is shaping up as anticipated. Here's to building a program!

No it will not as anyone who understands bball knows the staff is doing all they can with what they were left and recruited. If nothing else happens we add Lovett a top 100 pg , Shamorie a top 50 guard , Owens a 3/4 star center/ pf and Williams who may turn out to be a very good player over the 2-3 seasons he will have left. However , I am fully convinced we will add at least one more piece to this years class. Perhaps Bashir , my personal preference , perhaps Richard F , perhaps Rawle , perhaps Thon and perhaps any combo , but they will add additional high level talent. Rest assured of that.

I didn't see the game. I had a family obligation. Just looking at the stats what I got is that our defense was horrible again as they gave 84 points. But to me, the bottom line is that we lost by 9 points and missed 16 FreeThrows! Not seeing the game, those of you who did see the game see that analogy as very simplistic considering everything else that probably took place. I also heard that there was lay up missed towards end of the game in a crucial spot. Hit our free throws and make a lay up and we win this game in spite of our bad defense. Better days are definitely ahead and I have all the faith in the world in this staff. Once Mullin and staff get the type of players they want in here and are able to play the style they want things will be a little tough here. But we all knew this. I think things get better once we get Lovett back and get much better next year when the talent level on this team will be much better.

Except neither were cupcakes if you follow the game. We were favored by a point and a half against NJIT, they beat Michigan last year and had an honorable mention AA returning; doesn't that tell you something?
