Next Coach

This talk is ridiculous. I have no idea whether CM is the answer to our long standing coaching woes. Only time will tell. I know that Norm and Lavin weren't. So revisiting ex-coaches is pointless. And having a thread to discuss CM's replacement, at this early juncture in his tenure, is both distasteful and disrespectful IMO.

Steve Lavin seemed like a great guy who generally cared for his players, was a mediocre coach (at best), and a great recruiter when he wanted to be. He's gone because of the apathy displayed the last few recruiting classes and seemingly lack of passion for the same.

Like it or not, we are all in on Chris for the foreseeable future.

I think we should dismiss the new athletic director. We have won only one game since this Hartford interloper arrived. Now, since he has a four year contract, SJU will probably have to sell off another campus to pay him off, but let's give it a try.

Let's stop this crazy talk right now.

Maybe Mullin is a crappy coach right now. Crappy might be a compliment. Maybe we should have whipped Delaware's ass, even if it was just Amar pouring in 35 points. Maybe it was the worst defense I've seen since my 4th grade CYO team got whipped by some Brooklyn kids who were a foot taller and ran like rocket ships and some of them shaved.

But remember this: Mullin came here in April, 2015 after fall recruiting was just about done. He scooped us the best of the remaining kids out there and there were slim pickings. This year's class doesn't seem to have a lot of gems, but the roster is balanced. His third year players will mostly reflect 2 years of recruiting, and he was left with NOTHING for year one. So to be fair to him, even if he isn't even a fair coach right now, is that he essentially has one recruiting class that built on nothing. I would like to see these guys playing good basketball even if they aren't the most talented, but our expectations for them appear to be way too high - including anointing Lovett/Ponds as the best ever at SJU after one legitimate D1 opponent (Minnesota).

I have been preaching the same thing. But in doesn't mean that all criticism of Mullin and his assistants is unwarranted. If you are going to delegate the coaching duties to an assistant, perhaps an experienced one with a history of success would have been a better choice.

After watching this guy for over a year now it is time to look at the next coaching candidate.

1. Dan Hurley
2. Masiello

Any other thoughts? I think it is time to turn to a coach who is young and has head coaching experience.

Its far to early for this thread to exist.
But in the event the unthinkable happens, neither of the above two guys should be target candidates and I really would hope the admin doesn't lazily make Danny Hurley the first and only choice. They should take a swing at Archie Miller or even Gregg Marshall first.

But again, this is far too premature and hopefully things turn around soon and it never needs to be a consideration.

Gregg Marshall is already making $3.3 mill per year so he's probably out. His next job if he takes one, will be for a top 2-3 program in a power 5 conference.

Unless he is going to be coaching football Gregg Marshall can coach in a Power Conference called the Big East. :p

Power 6 you mean?

As for this thread, I agree criticism is warranted and a change with an assistant needs to be made. Mullin needs more time but again a change and/or improvement needs to be made this season.

No issue with Buck'a frustration. But fwiw we are all-in on the Mullin regime. The administration and fans all wanted this. Lavin was completely blindsided and pushed out by Mullin, the administration and many of fans who were aware CM was positioning himself for this job.

When you're all in you don't cash out when the payout is shit. We'd be foolish to give up on CM now. Get him some help in the form of an experienced NBA level assistant. A guy who breathes basketball and lost his family because he got too caught up in the job in the past. Find me someone with that cred for the love of God!

I have to respectfully disagree on one point Sirvoo, there were people who didn't want Lavin gone. It's obviously not an issue any more & yes I agree, everyone either was (or is) pulling for Mullin to succeed. But I know several fans who would have preferred that we had kept Lavin & were not happy with the Mullin hiring for the exact reason people are now bringing up (the fear of the Drexler in Houston thing happening). You make a good point about being foolish to give up on him now, all we can do is hope that this group turns it around & fast. This board, if it's not there already, will be in full meltdown mode if we lose to Tulane and/or Cal St. Northridge, in my opinion.

Very true I was speaking in general terms RE: Lavin but there definitely was a contingent who did not want him sacked. Also he didn't leave the cupboard as dry as many may think. Jordan would've stayed(and likely wouldn't be in jail until a later date). Also B Sampson and CO.

I'm in that contingent on Lavin. Lavin made my college experience great with his tenure. I do have a soft spot for him.
You are easily satisfied. Yes that boatload of post season wins was quite impressive. You know the one against Rutgers where Brownlee stepped out of bounds and the NIT St Joe's game where Dom hit the miracle shot. Oh yeah, that was it during his five year tenure for the BET, NIT, and NCAAs.

There is no way more contracts are being bought prior to them running their full term. What is SJU going to do? Pay off Lavin, Slice, Mullin and Richmond? Might as well call it a day and move to the MEAC at that point.

Nope Mullin signed up to own this and he's going to have to fix it. If that means another assistant with experience and a great tactician, then that's it. I don't buy the idea that he "refused" to bring in an experienced assistant.

the good news is I think Lavin is off the payroll now but I'll be in my 50's by the time Slice is off. Scary when you think I started posting on here in my 20's

Yes, not attending a Syracuse game for Jets, that was definitely me.

Real fan, I go to over 3 quarters of games a year and that includes Road so I wouldn't question it. I've never called a coach out in 30 years until now. These guys are bad!.

I would normally be pissed at this thread with your premature ejaculatory reaction but then I look at your avatar and realize you are not only Fcknasty but one of the deplorables. You never called a coach out in 30 years? Where the Buck were you during the Brian Mahoney Fiasco? Were you OK with Jarvis refusing to recruit NY high schools and actively using, like Franny Fancullo, St. John's as a stepping stone to interview for other jobs? Norm Roberts? I am sure you were an ardent supporter of Steve Lavin during his battle with cancer followed by his father's death after which he lost interest in recruiting. It's fine to criticize Mullin and staff because he negotiated for the job and is paid more than Kevin Ollie at Uconn but the reality is St. John's cannot afford to fire Mullin. Paying for Lavin, Slice and Mullin would bring down the athletic program. The only way Mully leaves is by resignation and I don't think he would do that while coach Carnesecca is alive. He needs a strong assistant and would be fine. The kid St. Jean may have to take one for the team and move on and Mullin will be pressured to hire an experienced associate head coach. That is the likeliest scenario.
Speaking of Kevin Ollie, here are comments from the Boneyard during tonight's horrible game against BU: " seriously. Does Ollie coach these guys in practice ?"; "10 points in the first 12 minutes, Ollie really coached them up the past week." ; "Maybe I'll post this again what are the chances we fire BD and KO in the same year?".
Kevin Ollie was named head coach at Uconn after just two years as Calhoun's assistant. In his 4 years his record wins were 20, 32, 20 and 25 with a National championship and an NCAA round of 32 plus an NIT. His top assistant is Glen Miller who has over 18 years of coaching experience. Yet, there are some nasty fans in the Boneyard that want Ollie fired because they were 2-4 coming into tonight's game.
Let's be realistic here! We are used to shit basketball and just fired a coach with 4 post season appearances. We cannot afford to fire even an assistant without them resigning. The title of the header should be "The next assistant coach". Mullin is caught in the middle of our mess. He may want out but his loyalty to Lou may preclude it right now. The house is sold, the wife has gone west, Slice is gone and the last thing he needs is to see this thread.
The man is under incredible pressure. We should keep him in ours prayers.

stevie wonder.....cant do worse

Im not usually one to laugh at those with handicaps, but this old MADTV basketball coach / blind basketball team skit still makes me laugh

as well as Coach Hines

maybe just hit return once or twice just for the heck of it to create spacing to make it easier for some of us who stare at computers all day and have enough trouble reading at night. I mean if our offense and defense doesn't have proper spacing does that mean it has to seep into out posts ? :)

other than that great post and that boneyard is a mess

That's adorable. But Lavin was a fraud and an embarassment, and if you can't see that then youve fallen for his dog and pony show, in which case there is little chance logic or reason will change your misguided opinion.

In short, Lavin is everything wrong with this world. Self absorbed, lazy, and lacking in substance. He is a salesman for himself, and found excuses for everything that happened to him.
If he was so self absorbed and lacking substance why did he cancel leaving meetings in atlantic city back to new york to meet people and instead very low key went to visit Jordan in prison when not 1 news outlet knew about it ( this its a mjmaher exclusive ).

He literally decided on a whim to cut off all plans and went to visit Jordan without more than an hour or 2 notice because he wanted to see how he was doing and if his family was ok

That is a great anecdote Mike. And it shows that he has a heart. But he did this after his coaching days were over.
While he was here he used his players and own tragedies as an excuse whenever he could. That info didn't need to be made public. And he lacked the substance of a basketball coach. Every loss he explained away with bs. "Well we didn't have enough moxy today, I thought we brought an adjustable wrench to the game but it was rusty". Wtf does that even mean? His explanation one game included a reference to Robin hood, I kid you not.

That said, I've never questioned if he has a spot in his heart for his players. It's everything else I have a problem with.

Bro he had freaking cancer and still was coaching, that's " substance" if you ask me. Every loss he explained away with BS? Bro he's a laid back person, there is nothing wrong with that. Compared to what I'm seeing out of Mullin in terms of results, I'll take the laid back mentality.

To be fair im 28 years old, so I have no care or love affair with Mullin, but you guys are crazy if you don't think Lavin is the superior coach BY FAR.

The far superior coach? Geez, there is no hope for some of you.
Lavin may have cared about his players but he didn't care about the job.
He showed up at tipoff for an NIT game!
He wasted a limited amount of allowed practice time each week letting his wife run a yoga class!

He wouldn't know how to diagram a play if it was color by number.

I'm sorry, I know many of you are frustrated with Mullin. But that doesn't excuse praising Lavin. He was and is a dope full of hot air. Period. Amen.
If you cannot see that you need to relearn the game of basketball.

However, it is great to see that he cares about his players.

Well how long do you give Mullin to duplicate that "success"?
I believe hea will have the record for a long time of least Big East wins.

So anyone who disagree with you on Lavin needs to relearn the game of basketball? That's funny. Why don't you go back to talking about what coaches wear a tie or not.
