Next Coach?

Bill Raftery has been to a few of our games. Maybe he's looking to leave the broadcast table and return to th sidelines.

Jerry Tarkanian is out of the hospital. Dean Smith remembers his name on occasion and is a Hall of Fame coach and Gene Keady is itching to get Lavin's job. He even wants to hire Rick Mount as a shooting consultant. My personal choice would be Bobby Knight who would recruit only "clean cut" kids from the midwest.

The name that is curiously absent from these discussions is Whitesell. I thought he was hired to be our Dunlap 2.0. Has his hiring had any impact over the past couple of seasons?

Lavin uses him as a practice coach. Barely speaks to him during games while Rico gets the love.

Untrue. Whitesell is the most engaged of all the assistants during games.

Depends on what you consider engaged. He truly tries to be engaged but Lavin is closest to Rico and trusted the head coaching duties to Hines last year during his bereavement last season instead. It was Hines first and only coaching experience while a man with 24 years of "head coaching" experience who had been the associate head coach at nationally ranked St. Louis was relegated to assisting a rookie. I was flabbergasted by that decision but none of Lavin's theatrics impress me any longer.

Are you talking about two years ago when Lavin missed the cuse game due to his fathers passing? Whitesell wasnt on our staff then.

no he is talking about when Lavins sneakers that he wore during games got a hole in them and he missed some time figuring out what to wear next

but apparently it doesn't take too much to get 72 flabbergasted

All it takes is 3 beers and I am easily flummoxed and taken advantage of. Speaking of beers, when will you get intoxicated enough to get married? Be careful but Baldi may have eyes for a cute Latina.

Haaa. We finally decided not to do a huge wedding and a movie she did down in south america finally premiered down there a few months ago so she got the red carpet and press events done so looks like this year. just waiting to find out if her brother will be able to come here from south america and when

BTW Baldi found probably the 1 girl alive that not only lets him root for Iona but even goes to games with him and likes it.

That woman is a keeper and Saint

I didn't mean to say Willard was great I was just trying to prove that NY recruits are in fact good and seton hall is proof of that because carrington, Delgado, whitehead, Rodriguez have all looked good.

Coach Willard had an eye for talent by recruiting Sterling Gibbs out of high school and again as a Texas transfer while Lav and his hardworking staff did not (as evidenced by Rivals and other recruiting sites).
"Mr" Otis are you prepared to congratulate staff on verbal commitment of Brandon Sampson if or when that occurs or will you remain silent? Not a fan off SL, but what's fair is fair.

Gil

Of course he won't, in fact he will most likely stay away for a period of time. The guy is predictable on when he comes around to post.

Lay off & stop being a bully. It's short for Gilbert, ok?

The guy is Cleuss. He would bring something here that we have not had in a long, long time. Local guy who can recruit locally; proven winner and team builder. We need a guy who can and is willing to build a PROGRAM, not just a guy who brings a big name and rep. We need a guy who knows bb and will work to install a system and recruit bb players to play within that system, not just athletic guys who are not a coherent group.

Sounds like McKillop's resume.

Yea it does. And if it isn't already apparent to everybody, McKillop is the guy we should have hired every chance he applied over the last few hires. Heck of a coach that knows how to win. He wasn't the sexy choice. Neither is Cluess, but Cluess has certainly won at every level, knows the local scene and would be a very safe choice imo. I'm not sure his i attention to defense is as glaring as some might think considering his record over the years. Regardless, with a strong associate head coach and good recruiters ala Massielo, he'd be a no brainer. Again, not the sexy choice but many of the better coaches arent.

I agree that he would have been a great hire. If You remember though his candidacy was shot down by a former SJU assistant whom said that McKillop "couldn't recruit above 125th Street" and since then he recruited one of the best players In the world to play at Davidson.

What Cluess doesn't need is anyone to tell him how to build a winning organization. He is a no-nonsense guy who won't tolerate infractions, and all of his players, even those who get zero playing time, would go through the wall for him. As a person, he is honest to a fault and direct and respectful, and I think our fans and students would connect with him right away. Even when you speak basketball with him, he will ask your opinions, and treat you as if your knowledge is equal to his. I was an advocate for him last time around, and he thought that was so ridiculous that it was a joke. This time, if Lavin is not our coach next year, it's no joke and not ridiculous. After hearing Coach Carnessecca and Coach Kaiser speak the other night, it is clear to me how amazing it would be to have a coach who can not only win, but understands St. John's tradition because he is part of it.

First of all, Norm Roberts was the coach during Sterling Gibbs junior year of high school and he was recruiting him. Sterling and his family were on campus for an unofficial visit. Norm got fired at the end of the year. Gary Williams had been recruiting Sterling hard for a while and he committed to Maryland right after the summer. After Williams was let go, he chose Texas over UCONN. By the time he decided to leave Texas, we had already given a scholarship to Jamal Branch at mid year.
If you are going to post something, please post facts.

He is not going to post any facts. For a long time poster and moderator to boot it is sad to see his commentary become so agenda driven. First 3 game winning streak and he wil disappear again.

I think Archie Miller has to be the first call.

Next I think perhaps Bobby Hurley should be 2nd choice. He is a good coach with a certain celebrity name appeal and would certainly recruit well locally.

Unless Lavin pulls a rabbit out of his hat like turning the season around and getting RJ, CO to stay w a solid recruiting class, I think it's time for him to go. Too much turmoil ,ineligiblites, short rosters, suspensions ,non balanced rosters,,drama for my blood..

He would be crazy to leave Davidson. No where near the pressure. A great school. Cheap cost of living. He can get a beautiful house on lake Norman. Sign me up.

It's also been an extra 17 years of being in North Carolina since our last overtures to him. His roots there were much less deep at the time.

He was not the only player to assault someone. A star transfer tried to have his way with a coed at a party that was swept under the rug.

The irony there is there has not been anyone worth recruiting from Harlem or Washington Heights since. But his measured racial implication should show you how amateurish his contributions were following Lou Carnesecca's retirement.

Who do you think recruited Felipe, Zendon, Tyrone Grant and James Scott ????? Also he was part of Fran's staff that brought on Artest, Barkley, Postell, and others.
Baffled as to how individuals post and and have absolutely no idea what they are talking about, SMH !!!!!

Must say I got to know Ron R when his son RJ & my nephew both were with Riverside program. I personally respect him. When I run into him occasionally, I find him to be a really good guy and a great SJU supporter. Fran kept him for a reason. As noted above, he was instrumental in getting Artest, Jessie, etc. Just needed to say that.
