Next Coach?

Lavin should go back to tv.Get one of the Hurleys young passionate good x and o guy local connections it seems to be a no brainer .

First, let me welcome you to our asylum. Your 2nd post and you summarized in one sentence what a few here would take up bandwidth with Fun length essays. Most would agree with you tonight or this morning wherever you are since we experts don't take losing easy and I am sure one or two have beaten their wives, kicked their dogs or worse. I am sure the crew that is in Charlotte are still getting shit faced and having the same conversation about the next coach who, by our experts consensus, seems to be Bobby Rat Face Hurley, a rat face protégé and famous alum of Dooke, a hated rival that is everything we are not nor ever will be. While not as passionate as brother Danny and more of a horse gambling million dollar loan defaulting business man (failed), Bobby does appear to know his x's and o's having learned from the best while Danny was psychologically abused by PJ Carlesimo at Seton Hall, and who had a similar meteoric rise to coaching fame having coached at Wagner College. What a small coincidental world indeed!
Though it may appear that either Hurley is a "no brainer" as you so technically put it, I think the search committee, that thankfully will not be comprised of any of us numbsculls, may look to the national stage before they hire "the local guy" with "local connections" to grow the brand Steve Lavin started after Norm Roberts discounted our basketball image to the point fans would throw the free tee shirts thrown to them back to the poor pep squad. Some are already thinking mid-major salary range with their mid-major choice of coach. Paultzman imitator Mr. Knight asked "Is Bobby Hurley a cheap get? Ie. 5 yrs/500k ea." ? Now that's thinking BIG in the new Big East where the better coaches are earning over $1 million already. As much as Bobby would want to leave that sewer of a city Buffalo in a New York City minute, I don't think that salary will buy him his new stable of horses.
As for all the hope Bobby will fill our roster with future Jersey boys, I think we will have better luck hiring Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. You see newbie, Bobby Hurley will be going into his 3rd year at SUNY Buffalo and his current team had not one Jersey boy and the only New York kid, Will Regan, from Buffalo, who was a senior who was recruited by his predecessor. His recruiting of NY/NJ talent has been [strike]not so impressive[/strike] horrendous. This of course leads us all back to the great job he has done in the one-seed MAC. The competition there has been at a level only a "Hurley " could have succeeded in and his 23-10 record is all the proof I need to convince me he will be a huge upgrade to Steve Lavin in the 2nd toughest league in America and whose 5 man team only had a 21-12 record compared to Bobby's phenomenal achievement at Buffalo. ....in the MAC, with their incredible OOC schedule. They achieved major recognition losing to Kentucky early before losing to the likes of St. Bonaventure, Akron, Eastern & Western Michigan etc.
Count me as one of the non-conformists here when I say PASS even though my idol here Paultzman has already changed his avatar to one ugly ass muttafkr who looks like he missed a few Prozac dosages.
I feel bad for the wizard. Nothing but bad luck has followed his tenure here what with cancer, top 50 recruits lost to vultures' rumors he was dying and a crack Compliance Office that wouldn't know a transcript from a Transgender. Yes, I am implying that the loss of Keith Thomas made us small and vulnerable and Chris [strike]Marley[/strike] Obekpa screwed his coach and his teammates and sabotaged their dreams.
I only hope if Steve Lavin is to be replaced we at St. John's don't think small in the Big East because we would not want Val (I am neutral) Ackerman staying "disappointed" with what she and the new Big East were hoping would be a flagship program in the capital of the Big East and Madison Square Garden.

Again, welcome aboard and enjoy the insanity. Our motto is "I am right and everybody else is a schmuck".
Being a bit of a satirist myself, had to use that photo showing him glaring at Rutecki after crappy call, a Rutecki forte, in loss to WV. :)

Actually I am very open minded about a new coach if need arises.

Howland? Cmon now. Another retread from UCLA. He's such a great coach that he doesn't have a job

Well I am pretty sure you won't say who you want since then it would not give you the option to hate on him.
I think you should just list the guys you don't want then just start bashing them. Gives you a nice head start.

Who is evaluating Steve Lavin ? Hope it isn't the athletic dept. heads.

The new University president, who will evaluate everything. First order of business is replacing the entire athletic department, starting with the AD.

After that, tell Lavin, thank you for giving SJU the initial jumpstart it needed to create a buzz, again, and for clearing the tumbleweed that littered the program. But things didn't work out in the end.

Wish Lavin well and good health. Which is something we all should do, because cancer affects us all in some way. Our feelings about half court sets should never cloud real life tragedies. Like it or not, Lavin was part of our family.

Afterall, we are, and always will be...St. John's.

Start with the Hurleys and Archie. No mor hasbeens

Assuming Lavin leaves, I believe we will have some quality guys to choose from. There is always is risk in any selection. Although I changed my Avi to Bobby Hurley, I am not fixated on him & acknowledge, despite his pedigree & recent HC success, he would be no sure thing either.

We've been bit in the rear in the past choosing the right coach, so I would be very interested in who would lead the selection process. With the 24/7 rigors of modern day coaching, I believe in taking a reasonable chance with rising coaches, not retreads. That said, bring in guys from various points along the spectrum & go from there. We can argue endlessly about "flavors of the month", former coaches, etc., but at the end of the day all we can hope for is that the selection process is professionally administered to mitigate risk & maximize our chances for success.

First things first, let's see what administration decides to do with our current coach. At the end of the day I will support that decision & continue to take years off my life as a SJU fan. :)

Amen, Paultz. Well said. Reflects my feelings well, now that I have had time to get past what happened last night.

Either way they go, let's hope the admin makes their decision shortly (this week). Only hurts the program to let this drag out.

Agree. Whatever is decided should be implemented immediately.

I am feeling Miller right now but something tells me he might have bigger expectation for himself at this point.
For what it is worth:
1. Miller
2. Howland
3. Keep Lavin / Bobby Hurley tie

Bielein in trouble?
Archie is the best choice, but I agree he can set his sights higher after recent Tourney success. His two bigs get thrown off team this year & he is still succeeding. Great coach Imo.

Don't think JB is in trouble at Michigan. This was a transition year & he lost several guys to injuries this season for varying amounts of time.

What could be higher than turning our program around and returning us to the glory that once was?

God, how many times have I heard that over the past 15 years or so. Never mind.

Not impressed by Hurley unless he can immediately bring in a big class. Can't we do better than Hurley? Miller, for example.

Miller's Contract extended to 2019. While financial terms of the new contract were not disclosed, according to USA Today, Miller ranks 47th among men’s collegiate basketball coaches with a per year salary of $335,152.

We should be discussing new AD.

It would be self-inflicting to bring in a new coach under the current AD.

Clean house. Hire a new AD quickly. Then bring in a new coach.

We'll lose our current verbals but I think 1 of them are gone anyway.

Even if he comes back, needs to shake up his staff. Too much dead wood.

Have a feeling staff shakeup will be a requirement if they allow him to stay...including Keady...assume school will have grown tired of paying for a consultant

Keady is not the one I'm thinking about. Shouldn't have two assistants who don't hit the road to recruit.

Time to move on from Lavin. Aggressive hire needed. I just can't stand this style of basketball.

I thought I woke up this morning and turned on my laptop and clicked on redmen to see what people were saying...... then I read this post and realized I hadn't yet actually woken up and was still asleep.

Boy am I gonna have a hilarious dream to share when I finally do wake

There's a LI guy down in Florida with two national championships and a very large salary. I'd put the call in to him first.
