Next Coach?

It isn't just Bobby's success at Buffalo this year that has people viewing him as a legit candidate. It is the pedigree - grew up under one of the best coaches at any level, smart and determined players (who maximized all of his tools), from the area, played under a legendary coach, etc, etc. That, plus their on-the-court success, is why people are into both Hurley brothers. And given their Dad's history, I think some view St. John's as a job that one or both would view as a long term options.

Hurley may turn out to be a great coach, but anointing him as the next big thing after one year? He is basically the flavor of the month. Give Georgia ST two more wins and people will start clamoring for him. Honestly I would like Howland. If we get a Hurley fine but neither is any kind of sure thing at this point.

We're not in a position to get a sure thing, a polished product with suits to match. We know where Bobby Hurley comes from, we know what he did in one year at Buffalo and we all watched one game that showed a spirited, passionate basketball coach who has a lot of experience being a winner on the basketball court. Maybe his temperment is a potential problem, but for a fan base that is begging for a real basketball coach, Bobby looks awfully good.

Looks like Archie Miller's interview is going to have to be pushed back a few days.

We need to go after him after his season is over. Great coach that is about to get picked by a big program very soon. Maybe Texas?

Forget Mark Jackson. That is a disaster waiting to happen. Bobby Hurley destroys Jackson in nearly every category when it comes to college basketball--playing careers, coaching experience, recruiting experience, winning....

Does anyone really think Bobby Hurley is going to fail?

Yeah he did a good job of it in the pros. Before the accident he was not playing well. People are going crazy about a guy with one year of experience? If college playing career is that valued to you push for Laettner then.

Bobby has two seasons at Buffalo (19-10 1st place, and 23-9 1st place). He was the lead assistant for a year at Rhode Island r and the lead assistant at Wagner for two season--helping Wagner to its best record in school history (25-6). He also worked as a scout in the NBA for a year.

PGs seem to make the best coaches (Pitino, Miller brothers, etc).
It doesn't hurt that his dad coaches a powerhouse either or that he's from one of the most fertile recruiting zones in the country.

Seems to be Jay Wright II to me. Don't want to miss that boat again.

I think people are getting ahead of themselves with the Hurley's. Not saying either or both won't be very successful, I am just saying people are speculating a bit much here.

Bobby Hurley could have alot of people after him. He has the pedigree and is a better X's and O's coach then most. Kids would love playing for him.

I don't know, I'd just be surprised he comes here if Lavin goes.

In regards to replacing Lavin, this can't be overlooked:
ADR
Amir
Balamou
Sampson
One of the two freshman guards?

What promising coach is going to get all excited about that?
Money talks.

All I am saying is the reasons you gave for hiring Hurley are the same reasons I am not so gung ho on not retaining Lavin. I can't say with assurances at this point he is a definite upgrade.

No doubt anyone is a risk & he is indeed "flavor of month" as you said. However, with his pedigree & recent success, he certainly merits consideration. A lock success, no, but a worthy candidate.

Plus, you get Hurley now and you actually have some leverage with the contract to make it harder for him to leave.

The Buffalo team I saw almost beat WVU had no business being within 20 points. That is a testament to Hurley.

I agree . Not sure if he would go here but this is the coach that we have been looking for. Strong
X and o coach with local ties. Can recruit in NYC metro area. Lots of upside

Please god help this program I'm a long time fan longtime redmen.com viewer and haven't posted in years. To not have a decent power forward and back up center is inexcusable.I will sit back and wait but this team has no chance next year without chieck diallo.Seems like co will be gone from Lavins comments and Rasheed is no way an Nba player if he leaves we r sunk. What a shame that this program is again in this poor shape.I hope Lavin goes back to espn and we get a good young up and coming coach. Thanks for all who post here

Depending upon whom you ask, he was ready to come here a few years ago with his brother if Lavin couldn't make it back from cancer.

I also remember some posters at the beginning of the season saying he ran some nice stuff against Kentucky.

Excuse me, but didn't Bobby Hurley's team lose today? And putting that aside, what has he accomplished in the ever-powerful Mid-American Conference that merits his even being considered as head coach of St. John's ... which, if I understand correctly, is a member of one of college basketball's elite conferences?

Well at least the boards will be united I guess. Everyone will share a coke and sing kumbaya if it happens.
I guess it would add some juice. He never had to try and recruit big time kids. At Buffalo and at Wagner you are going after a different type of kid. If he brought some of those kids here the board would go into cardiac arrest.

One last thing, that pedigree thing doesn't always work or else John Wooden, Red Aurbach, Bobby Knight, etc would have been given a lot of coin to breed.

Bobby Hurley played a closer game with SUNY Buffalo against a #5 seed than Lavin's Big East teams did against an 11 seed and an 8 seed.

Is there really a comparison here?
