Next Coach?

Give me Bobby Hurley any day of the week
A freakin SUNY school is in the NCAA and giving WVU all can handle, sign me up!!
Absolutely incredible

Not me. Yes, he's done a good job there. But he looks like he has some anger issues! :eek:hmy:

Anger or feistiness?
I wish our staff would exude that much energy on the sideline

Anger. I don't mind feistiness. That doesn't always come out. But he's wound way too tight for my liking. He looks like he's about to bust an artery!

Having said that, I would have liked to see his team win today.

That same anger I've seen from

John Calipari
Coach K
Bobby Knight
Jim Calhoun

Should I keep going?

If you like country club coaches thats fine and totally your prerogative. IMO college coaches need a level of fire.

I couldn't agree with you more, Moose
Our coach's pilot light went out years ago

As long as the anger does not result in Mike Rice like issues (or Coach Knight at times), who cares? As Moose said, there needs to be a level of fire. Their intensity and passion should be palpable.

We'll agree to disagree
He will be a very successful coach at a big time school very soon
His star is rising; Lavin's is fading
Hurley would be a marked improvement over what we have
If Hurley can do what he did this year, imagine what he would do with real talent

Can he get real talent though? That's the $1m question.

considering we would have the pipeline to NJ i would take either Hurley in a heart beat.

i think the brother (Danny) has done just as good a job considering the mess he walked into at URI - they will be an NCAA team next year.....

You can go on as much as you like. The guys you mentioned, except for Bobby Knight, show flashes of anger. That's very different from a wound up guy like Hurley. I never said I like "country club coaches." But I do like even keeled coaches, and the guys you mentioned, except for Knight, are passionate and even keeled in their emotions. Hurley's a Bear Bryant situation waiting to happen.

Maybe, but it does appear that daddy doesn't feed his players to his sons (yet). Think Danny actually joked about it in an article.

Think both could be good coaches and candidates for major jobs in the near future.

it is a fun game. The point is there are coaches who yell and scream and god forbid glare ala Harrison who have won 900 games and been ticking time bombs like Gonzo and Rice. My point is the short fuse or anger or whatever Tony was inferring and a few others with Masiello etc should be pretty far down the list when checking boxes on whether or not to hire someone.

Hey, college football maven, believe you were referencing Woody Hayes and did not mean to besmirch the hallowed, beloved Paul Bear Bryant. Your apology is duly noted! :)

Yes, you are right. My apologies. Shows how much I follow college football. Which is not at all!

But please, don't EVER use the word "maven" when referring to me. ;)

Moose, we will have to agree to disagree. I believe a person's psychological makeup should be high up on the list of who's going to be representing a University or College and who's going to be mentoring and teaching young men. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it! :)

By the way, while she never showed extreme emotion, Pat Summit's glare was enough to cower anyone!

Fran Fraschilla had that fire in spades

I haven't seen enough of Bobby Hurley to make an informed judgment but his team did look gritty today. They hung in the game against a superior team---although sloppy play by WVU had something to do with that. As an aside, I'm so not surprised that people would be make definitive statements about his future success based on seeing him coach one game.

Our coach's pilot light went out years ago

Oh boy! Here we go again!
One Hurley goes to the NIT and the other goes to the NCAAs (and loses) and Moose is comparing them to icons.
I love you guys and your creative perspicacity but come on now! Both I am sure are fine coaches with a bright future. For Bobby I am positive he will not be shuffling off to Buffalo very soon as a few vacancies have already opened up that pay twice his salary and more. SUNY will not get into that salary territory. Danny, who has much more coaching experience earns a very decent salary for an A10 school. They may even give him up to a buck to keep him but he may be peaking already. As for Masiello, fuggedaboutit! Fran Fraschilla with a beard!
As for Mark's observation re. Lavs pilot light, he may be on to something most would not consider or even understand. Three years ago coach made a life-altering decision to have his prostate gland radically removed. He had serious complications and for a young man he has to live with that decision. However, I tend to agree he has not been the same since. He was on fire his first year and tore through the recruiting process with confidence and aggressiveness. We get our drive and aggressiveness with higher levels of testosterone and his may have been radically affected. Not to make excuses for what some perceive as laziness or being laid back but I think it has taken a toll on him. He may be living a country club life but he may not be enjoying his walk in the country as much as some may think.

If the criteria for good coaching is that the team "hung in the game against a superior team," what does that say about our team's coaching against Duke and Gonzaga (#1 & 2 seeds, respectively) during the regular season, as well as beating Georgetown, Providence (twice), and Xavier (#4, 6 & 6 seeds, respectively)?

Wow! I've read a number if ridiculous posts, but this one takes the cake. You make the leap that lavin has suffered from diminished testosterone and then posit that it has affected his recruiting.

What is the basis for your statements?

Are you familiar with lavin 's medical treatment? Are you a doctor? Are you close with lavin such that you can postulate that you have observed a difference in his personality ?

I suspect the answer to all my questions is a resounding no. In fact , I suspect you've probably never had a significant conversation with lavin much less observed his recruiting prowess pre and post surgery.

Did you have any idea what I was talking about whatsoever?
Some of you younger meatballs with the big balls of a Moose may eventually understand what the man went through with his cancer. Trust me, your concern #1 won't be watching teenagers bounce balls in a gym as much. If you paid attention over the past 3 years you would have heard him reference his disease many times and how it affected his life. Not that a chowder head like you or your fellow literati that lurk here give a flying vafancullo about what he went through as long as someone can give you and a few other bipolars here some anti Lavin laxatives to digest and then defecate out of your mouth. If I posted I heard about a surprise recruit a few here would PM me in minutes for your info fix. If it were about the concern over the well being of the coach.....hey who gives a flying! As for your travelling band of malcontents and you, you seemingly have no problem making daily reference to his recruiting "efforts", "decision making", imply his drive as a coach is sub par, and every other conceivable assumption like a bunch of Dr. Phil's but the only line you can connect to my missive is a power line one liner? Here's a one liner for you and your fellow synchronized swimming teammates - If one synchronized swimmer drowns, do the rest have to drown too? Don't all jump into the empty pool together.
