Next Coach?

"Despite being picked by the league’s coaches to finish third, Lavin led the Johnnies (21-11) to a fifth-place finish."

Come on zach, are you really gonna try to make it sound like the regular season was a failure ??

Zach shouldn't be brought back. Journalists are supposed to report in a neutral fashion. Zach's bias is clear and he panders to the anti-Lavin crowd which he mistakenly believes is the majority just because they are the most vocal on WFAN, Redmen, and JJ.

That quote by Zach is just absurd. We missed 3rd place by a four point loss to Butler due to Rysheed not playing.

I thought it was that close but we finished 10-8. The second and third place teams finished 12-6

Well, if Sheed played and we beat Butler instead of losing by four, we would both then be 11-7. It just shows how close everything was 2-6 this year in the Big East. His tweet was pointless. To make it seem like there was some huge discrepancy between 3rd in 5th is disingenuous at best.

Sorry. Of course you are right.

When you say that he "mistakenly believes is the majority.....", do you have some statistics to show that it's not the majority? Or is that just your "unbiased" opinion?

Let's face it boys (and Linda Mirabella) there are dozens of vocal Steve Lavin haters that mimic each other like copy cat killers on social media. Many are pathological head cases while some have sincere concerns over the St. John's basketball program. There are a handful that are both and they are mounting a holy crusade to dislodge this infidel from Lou Carnesecca's mythical throne.
Quite a cast of characters with most hiding behind multiple screen names except for the ever intrepid Sammy who doesn't give a fck what anyone thinks and who is the leader of the crusaders.  Sammy religiously attends Sunday Mass before proceeding to vilify his arch enemy Steve (but it's nothing personal) Lavin.  He sees himself as the ultimate judge of good character.  The problem is he has been such a poor judge of character in the past that relying on his opinion on Lavin is not for the faint of heart.  You see, this is the same Maven know it all that befriended Bob Oliva for years, kissed Ernie Lorch's ring and still is friends with the blowhard Mike Jarvis and family.  Now everyone I know who knew Bob Oliva knew he was a creepy guy but not Sammy.
His heir apparent, formerly Hit the Gym Slob, formerly Avon Barksdale, now "The Party's Over" on Twitter uses the exact same words and phraseology as the big fella.  He too has "forgotten more about basketball than" blah, blah, blah.      Hit/Avon/Party is fond of calling fellow fans out for hiding behind screen names. Go figure but all crusaders use shields to defend themselves against non believers and to block counter attacks.  In their insulated world of world-wide Web social media these social misfits also are so self-righteous that they cannot tolerate dissent from their views and proceed to block others from the discussion. They conveniently take a page out of the North Korean form of "social" media to manipulate the media to seem like they are the majority. This insular group of crusaders follow each others cues and retweet each others anti Lavin propaganda with little originality.
They occasionally resurface on Johnny Jungle and Redmen.com to rub salt into the wounds of the non believers then retreat at the sign of any good news regarding the team, the coach or future recruits.
So, if that crusading group of Marco/Ricky/Baldi/Theo/Avon/Sammy/Gonzo appears like the majority that interact with Zach it may be because Zach has been annointed the media voice of the crusaders and should Lavin be given an extension or have any level of success, they will retreat to their Malta and live on a rocky relationship island for years to come. No visitors welcome! When the old king eventually dies they will have no reason to interact with any St. John's supporters any longer.  They will still live their basketball alter egos by making believe that they are part of some "wildcat" nation but they will be dead to us.

I love all those posters you mentioned! I don't care if they change their names 52 times.. They are long time fans of the Program and, only want a return of some type of excellence for SJU BASKETBALL.

The Lavin era isn't it..

A couple of those fans I mentioned he been trolls on SJU fan sites for a dozen or more years. They revel in our down years and just love to stir up shit.

Smart of President Bobby to not entertain a sports reporter's intent on getting some scoop on the contract issue when the team is still playing. What response did Robin expect???
Would the president say anything to Robin other than "we will review the coach's status at the conclusion of the season".
Did Rubin expect "wink" we intend to fire Lavin, save $1.3 million and hire Mad Max Masiello because now he has his college degree. ;)
BTW, do we have proof Masiello actually completed the coursework at UK himself?

Couple of week's we'll know if this is the Lavin Era or the Lavin error.

Wouldn't it make sense for recruiting purposes if he is coming back to at least make that announcement as soon as possible.

What does he need to do to be retaine/extended? Win 1 NCAA game? 2? He's gone regardless?

After sitting through the semifinals last night, it's clear that

1) Nova is very well coached
2) Georgetown is very well coached - they didn't lose, they ran out of clock, and Xavier is thankful for that.
3) Providence is very well coached.

These are coaches that rally their guys to be patient and intense even when losing. The Providence team stood toe to toe with Nova, and helped by a phantom foul, Nova was likely to escape with a win. Couldn't see us at full strength doing the same. The same goes for Georgetown's roaring comeback as a flagrant 2 where they dominated action thereafter.

If we're not sure after five years, doesn't that say something?

I feel like we are waiting to see if he wins one NCAA game to decide whether we will excuse the precipitous drop in recruiting.

I tend to agree with a lot of things you say, but I'm not one (and, I know a couple G'town fans who've said the same) who believes they're well-coached. They are an average coached team, IMO.

The game shifted on the tech by Reynolds. It was a 5-point possession after the tech, and Xavier went into a shell. They started playing "keep away," and all aggression islost once that happens. Stainbrook had 3 turnovers in that span, and Xavier couldn't hit FTs. I believe they are a good, FT shooting team, if I'm not mistaken.

Just one of those moments where one team loses momentum after a turnover or silly play, and the team who was down big plays without any pressure, IMO.

It's good analysis on your part, and a fair rationale for the shifting tides of momentum. I would say they used the clock extremely well in the last few minutes

What does he need to do to be retaine/extended? Win 1 NCAA game? 2? He's gone regardless?

Win at least 1 in the tourney (especially after the two previous blowout losses) and score high caliber recruits (Diallo, Mussini...), Lavin cant win with mid-tier players and even with top recruits it might be another 3-4 yrs before we see another tourney.

To be successful at St. John's you need a coach that can recruit. If he is a good coach and can't get the players we will never ever see an NCAA bid again. Hall of Fame coach Carnesecca was not a very good coach. He was lucky to have coached at a time when NYC produced a dozen high level D1 every year. He would have been an abject failure in today's college basketball climate.
If this program can't recruit nationally they will be relegated to the bottom of the league.
I am not married to Lavin as head coach but some of the names put forth scare me.
As those that just want Lavin out regardless because of his salary then I submit we do not belong in the Big East.

If we go after another coach, it NEEDS to be a major impact big name coach. Not a coach at these mid majors who will have mid major recruits lined up for the next couple years. At least Lavin has Sampson and possibly a couple other major recruits.

I'm not saying Lavin is a fantastic coach but this is a grass is always greener situation. If we wanted to take a shot on a mid major coach it would've been this year when we had a formidable roster.

Yeah, well we all thought that Lavin was that "major impact big name coach", but he's not even close. Why not go after a mid major coach? I think Dan Hurley could do the same as Lavin at the very least.
If SJU gets blownout out Thursday or Friday, then I gotta believe that Lavin is done here. Getting blownout the last 3 games of the season would be a disgrace.

I believe it will be a good game, but anything is possible with this team.

If they do go after another coach, I would like it to be Archie Miller of Dayton.

There were 4 teams in the semi-finals last night, all teams being well coached. Lavin is 5-3 against those coaches this year, prior to BET.

That should be the 1st choice, before either Hurley is considered.

Time to stop bringing up what Carnesseca did, what Mahoney did, what Norm did, etc.

It's time to come up with an identity.

Throwing together players, regardless of their rankings, and not being able to coach them is not the way to sustained success.

You have to coach to win. Motivation can only take you so far.

SJU, SH and DePaul didn't put up a fight in the BE tourney. You had 2 All-Conference players, the DPOY, the MIP, a McDonald's AA, the current ROY and the returning ROY between the 3 teams.

Can't use the argument that great players guarantee wins.

Whatever will happen to Lavin is to come.

But until we get someone who can actually coach players, it won't matter who we recruit. And the last 4 years has proven that.

I have no inside knowledge whatsoever, but I just get the feeling that the administration wants to move on from Lavin. There have been rumors about an extension for 2 years now and yet nothing has come of it. I'm sure there's a reason why.
