Next Coach?

I'm sorry.....but when was it announced that Lavin was going to be fired this year? Could someone please post the link.....

I'm sure some ppl can't wait. I'll be honest if he makes the tournament this year I'd give him another two yrs. to see what happens. I've never entertained this thought but if we go to NIT this year and he is retained I don't know if I can support the program until there's a change. So I guess time will tell

Sirvoo, that pretty much sums up how I feel. I couldn't agree more. Well said. The results of this year will determine if I renew my season tickets for next year, or not. I debated whether or not to renew this year. And then after the start we had, I was glad I did. And now? Well.......

Yes exactly. I think 95% of us are reasonable like you and agree that if we pull together somehow the rest of the year and earn a birth, we can accept losing out on Briscoe and barely being able to field a team for next year(at the moment). But if things continue to trend downward and he stays I will be very disappointed.

I don't think the season is as 'lost' as some of you are making it out to be....we are 11-4..with 3 of those losses coming against top 25 teams, and only one real blowout. I think we give it another couple weeks before we start declaring this season over....

Not lost yet, but prognosis, if one can be objective, seems "guarded" to be kind. We shall see.

Season is soooo far from over. Everyone got emotional including me after nova game because our guys looked so helpless and exhausted in final few minutes, but season is far from over.

3-3 in Big East play is gonna happen. I believe

With that being said, if we make the tourney Lavin better use that to get recruits or something. I agree with whoever said this season doesn't save Lavins job because the future is not bright

Lavin should be evaluated on his body of work, based on his W/L results AND, the other important components of a Coach's job responsibilities..

He is getting paid more money than he has delivered in his job performance. Plus, he hasn't realized the gold standard of any Coach's requirements, a NCAA appearance, with other than Norm's players.

Over time, we have seen that is he is lacking in several fundamentals Areas that are likely not to improve. Coaching Strategy, Team Composition,Metro Area Recruiting, and work ethic.

I also believe Steve has realized he's nor accomplishing the things expected of him, when he was hired and as a result, has essentially packed it in on the Recruiting front. This leading to him, either leaving of his own accord or, being non renewed.
His reliance on types of players that are undersized and more athletic than skilled don't fit into the BE conference style of play.. It is not a league that you can win in, without skilled frontcourt players and bona fide 3 point shooters, not like Max or Marco.
The BE has always been a physical play league, not what STEVE experienced on the West Coast. He hasn't adapted to that Coaching wise on the Court, or, in recruiting the type of skilled, big bodied players.

He's also, negligently, in my mind ,shown a indifference to our traditional base of players from the CHSAA AND PSAl. I also don't think he has realized recruiting for us , as a private, Catholic school with mainly NY/NJ roots and brand identity, is way different than UCLA. Yet, he roams all over the USA and Internationally, with limited success. Save for his initial class, where he got kids ranked in the top 100, from all over the country, mostly based on his identity as a ESPN COMMENTATOR.

And, those kids, despite HS ratings, were all of the same type. Small, quick, athletic but, not truly 5 tool players.DLO GETS KUDOES HERE. He has improved more, on his own merits, than any help from Steve.

Throw in Steve's weak player Management/Coaching Skills and we are where we are are, under his leadership. Again, last in the BE looking up and unlikely to make the big dance, save a Winning run from now until the BE tourney. We might need 10 Conference Wins to get in and, with 2 home losses, is that likely?

Lastly, I sense he has exhausted the patience of all constituencies, press, fans, administration, players, with his used car salesman persona in public commentary. TIME FOR HIM TO MOVE ON..

I have no idea where they go, but I don't think the school will pay Lavin money to the next coach. But since we are throwing names around, this is what I would like to see happen.

Hire an experienced coach like Howland/Greenberg/Frank/Van Gundy and bring Abdelmassih home as an assistant. All of those coaches stress defense and fundamentals, so the team will have an identity.

Have Abdelmassih and Chiles pound the recruiting pavement and add a seasoned x's and o's assistant. I will gladly take my chances against any coach for any player with that group.

Hey, I can aim high and throw names around too. :)

If a coaching change is made, Cluess is the early front runner by a mile.

Among mid-majors he is the surest bet to win here. He knows the program, the area, has won everywhere, money won't be an issue, he wouldn't use SJU as a stepping stone, and would likely retire from the job. IF a change is to be made, this will be the guy.

I don't think he even gets an interview. I can't put a finger on why, but no one I talk to has ever mentioned Cluess as somebody on the proverbial short list. Which is odd, considering the ties he has to the school.
There must be a reason for that.
I agree with you that he's a good offensive coach, and finds a way to get the players that fall between the cracks; the transfers, jucos, undersized guys etc. But I just don't think he's a good fit for the Big East.

Relax... the natives do this whenever we hit a rough patch.. makes everyone feel better, so go with it.

Jeff Van Gundy is an interesting choice. I don't think they are going to gamble with high priced guys who've failed or have any black marks on their records. SJU and the Mets have a lot in common - their tendency is to spend not quite enough to get a proven entity, and once failed will retreat back to the next level down.

Zach Spiker at Army is the guy they should hire.

I'm not suggesting him, but you are correct about Spiker doing a great job at Army. Another under the radar guy is Kyle Smith of Columbia a really good X &O guy with solid contacts in Australia btw. He was the main reason, as AC at St. Mary's, for them getting talented Ausies.

Again, I am not suggesting these two if we have a vacancy. Who knows if they can recruit BE players, but both are succeeding at difficult programs. And SJU certainly qualifies on the "difficulty" metrics. :)

CREAN may be available at season's end.. He is getting pounded by IU FANS, ETC..

He did a great job at Marquette, getting the type of players that can win in the BE. He knows our league.. At Indiana, he's competing with Kentucky,ND, PURDUE,,Ohio State and, Butler, BELIEVE IT OR NOT. Even the best Coaches don't get every MCD AA they want... For example, IZZO and Beilein are having down years, for them.

problem at schools like UCLA,,KENTUCKY, DUke, ETC, IS THE UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS TO WIN EVERY YEAR.. nOT JUST YOUR CONFERENCE BUT,THE NCAA. iNDIANA FANS ARE THE SAME CLOTH.

Knight spoiled them for eternity with his results..

At St. john's there isn't really any pressure to win.

I don't think Crean would be interested in St John's. I suspect the professional basketball atmosphere at IU has spoiled him and to coach at St. Johns would be too sharp a contrast.

Probable have a better chance getting Howland who might be hungry enough at this point.

Relax... the natives do this whenever we hit a rough patch.. makes everyone feel better, so go with it.

hardly, this native does it because we have had countless "rough patches" over the last 5 years; both on and off the court. Poor recruiting effort, shoddy or no due diligence on those recruits interested or planning on attending SJU, poor development and/or complete non-use of players HE recruited and then talked up, inane game and substitution strategies, etc, etc., etc. My opinion has nothing to do with losing a couple of games, this team has achieved all that can be expected IMO and I enjoy watching them and respect them. I do not consider my feelings about Lavin to be in "conflict" with anyone who feels differently and it does not make me feel better at all that we potentially face another coaching change but nothing, and I mean nothing, Lavin has done makes me feel he is the guy to lead us into the future. In 5 years. He had a good initial recruiting class (albeit with issues even after recruits were committed) and then a highly rated player he can't even begin to control; other than that zero. I hope we make the tourney and go deep and we might but even if we do it won't change my opinion of Lavin one bit; to me he conjures up memories of Jarvis, no substance, a lot of lazy and arrogant.

If Lavin walks after the year, as some are suggesting, then how can you throw out big time names to come in here? If he's leaving because the roster is too barren, why would a big time coach want to inherit the same thing?

It would have to be a young up-and-comer, another Norm-esque candidate, and you just have to hope that the guy works out. Heck, even if he does, he's probably gone for greener pastures in 3 or 4 years.

As evidenced by the large number of fans calling for the head of a coach currently sporting an 11-4 record...

Not a huge fan of Cleuss but in the position roster wise we will be in next season he sure has a knack of finding players from all over. I believe a good choice would be Archie Miller of Dayton, his teams move the ball can shoot and seem to be fundamentally sound. His brother at Arizona is a great recruiter and if he has recruiting success here he could accomplish big things. Hasn't gotten big names to UD but lots of really solid players and if he hires a good recruiter as an assistant can accomplish big things here IMHO.

Just out of curiosity, how could you not be a fan of Cluess? The guy has gone 98-23 at CW Post and 100-50 at Iona. All he's done is win.

I just don't think his inattention to defense would translate to BE success. Just my opinion.

Im still a big Lav fan, but I will say that I like what Kevin Williard is doing at Seton Hall alot!! That guy is a rising star!
