Next Coach?

And what happens with our one and only LOI signee for next year when/if Lavin is gone?

Will he also want to leave?

The kid from the Math school who folds when he plays against legit competition?

Great, let's downgrade a recruit.Lincoln targeted this kid as the only weapon and stopped him.
One game means nothing Mullin folded against Georgetown's box and one , that HOF NBA player must be nothing.

Bill Raftery has been to a few of our games. Maybe he's looking to leave the broadcast table and return to th sidelines.

The name that is curiously absent from these discussions is Whitesell. I thought he was hired to be our Dunlap 2.0. Has his hiring had any impact over the past couple of seasons?

Lavin uses him as a practice coach. Barely speaks to him during games while Rico gets the love.

Untrue. Whitesell is the most engaged of all the assistants during games.

Depends on what you consider engaged. He truly tries to be engaged but Lavin is closest to Rico and trusted the head coaching duties to Hines last year during his bereavement last season instead. It was Hines first and only coaching experience while a man with 24 years of "head coaching" experience who had been the associate head coach at nationally ranked St. Louis was relegated to assisting a rookie. I was flabbergasted by that decision but none of Lavin's theatrics impress me any longer.

Are you talking about two years ago when Lavin missed the cuse game due to his fathers passing? Whitesell wasnt on our staff then.

no he is talking about when Lavins sneakers that he wore during games got a hole in them and he missed some time figuring out what to wear next

but apparently it doesn't take too much to get 72 flabbergasted

All it takes is 3 beers and I am easily flummoxed and taken advantage of. Speaking of beers, when will you get intoxicated enough to get married? Be careful but Baldi may have eyes for a cute Latina.

Jerry Tarkanian is out of the hospital. Dean Smith remembers his name on occasion and is a Hall of Fame coach and Gene Keady is itching to get Lavin's job. He even wants to hire Rick Mount as a shooting consultant. My personal choice would be Bobby Knight who would recruit only "clean cut" kids from the midwest.

Frankly, I think Lavin should do a "Weekend at Bernie's" with John Wooden's corpse. There's no way some of that knowledge doesn't seep out and help bring us a championship.

Not a huge fan of Cleuss but in the position roster wise we will be in next season he sure has a knack of finding players from all over. I believe a good choice would be Archie Miller of Dayton, his teams move the ball can shoot and seem to be fundamentally sound. His brother at Arizona is a great recruiter and if he has recruiting success here he could accomplish big things. Hasn't gotten big names to UD but lots of really solid players and if he hires a good recruiter as an assistant can accomplish big things here IMHO.

I'm sorry.....but when was it announced that Lavin was going to be fired this year? Could someone please post the link.....

Well, if you read this forum, he's a goner. :eek:hmy: ;)

I'm sure some ppl can't wait. I'll be honest if he makes the tournament this year I'd give him another two yrs. to see what happens. I've never entertained this thought but if we go to NIT this year and he is retained I don't know if I can support the program until there's a change. So I guess time will tell

Sirvoo, that pretty much sums up how I feel. I couldn't agree more. Well said. The results of this year will determine if I renew my season tickets for next year, or not. I debated whether or not to renew this year. And then after the start we had, I was glad I did. And now? Well.......

Yes exactly. I think 95% of us are reasonable like you and agree that if we pull together somehow the rest of the year and earn a birth, we can accept losing out on Briscoe and barely being able to field a team for next year(at the moment). But if things continue to trend downward and he stays I will be very disappointed.

Whether he stays or goes is an administration decision.

You can take the posts on this thread as a commentary that lots of people who know something about basketball and who care about St Johns have a clear opinion about what the administration should do.

If he lands a top 10 recruiting class for 2015 he stays no matter what

I am militantly anti-Lavin so my posts should be read in that light. We have had 5 years of trending downward under the man with the very distinct possibility of fielding one of the worst rosters in the history of this program next year. That is not a fact but a possibility. So with that in mind and I certainly respect your different opinion, but I have a hard time following the reasoning that this year's results should affect anything concerning the future.

Reasonable and smart on your part, but it almost never works that way. Results driven business, and right now I'd say 75-25 we aren't going to get where we want to be this year anyway.

I expect Lavin to quit . He will not want to risk a being fired and will not want to live with the mess which he created for the future

I hear you Logen. And you make a good point. The question of replacing Lavin is, IMHO, not an easy one because it does mean starting from scratch all over again and hoping that whoever is hired will turn out well. We could end up finding a Coach K or Pitino just starting out, or we could end up with a Norm Roberts again. And that's where I come from. Not that I am so pro-Lavin, but I am not comfortable with throwing the last five years out and rolling the dice, starting all over again and hoping for a good hire.

I will say one thing. This is not the old Harrington administration at St. John's. So I do have more faith that this current administration will take the decision to replace Lavin, if it comes to that, very seriously and with great care.

In any event, the current situation is not acceptable.
