Next Coach?

The name that is curiously absent from these discussions is Whitesell. I thought he was hired to be our Dunlap 2.0. Has his hiring had any impact over the past couple of seasons?

It's Whitesells fault that the recruiting gurus took off a few years? Or that the 6th man takes off every other day?

Like it or not, we have a coach.

Where?

I am pretty sure coach Cluess will be in the mix. Kids like his style of play, he has solid NYC area connections and comes from a St. John's family. All he would need to do is hire great assistants, keep Tony Chiles who is the only coach on our team that has had any contact with potential recruits and we will be in the middle of the Big East pack for years to come. I also heard he hates being at a school that rhymes with an incomplete sentence. Would you want to coach at a school that ends with a question mark? I OWN A.....?

BTW, I am 110% sure he would keep Tony.

Ya Tony has been killing it on the recruiting front. He is first to go

He has been doing all the heavy lifting for both Lavin and his boyfriend Rico for 5 years now. He is the only coach I saw at CTK games while Rico was holed up with his Hollywood wife in Long Island City and Lavin was planning his next vacation /recruiting trip. It actually would not shock me to see him as head coach at Iona

And what has Chiles brought in?

Wrong, wrong question! Who has Steve Lavin "closed the deal with" that was the fruit of Tony's labor?? Briscoe? Diallo? Whitehead? The Philadelphia recruits only contact have been Tony which may be the only reason Samir Doughty stays under a new coach if Chiles is retained. Who kept in constant contact with Chris Obekpa? Who was the STJ face at the Kenton Facey games in high school? Lavin was supposed to be a closer not his chief recruiter.

So you give credit for Obekpa and it's Lavish fault on Facey?

Tony can only bring the horse to water, but our Lavish Lavin must decide if wants to close the deal.

To be fair, Chiles has been instrumental in keeping us alive with Brandon Sampson and has been all over the place in last three months. I don't have axe to grind either way, but wanted to get those FACTS on the table.

Keeping us alive? We have no bench

And what happens with our one and only LOI signee for next year when/if Lavin is gone?

Will he also want to leave?

The kid from the Math school who folds when he plays against legit competition?

Meaning alive in recruiting him Baldi. Come on, I know what a mess the roster is.

Lavin uses him as a practice coach. Barely speaks to him during games while Rico gets the love.

Untrue. Whitesell is the most engaged of all the assistants during games.

Well then he must go too

Ben Howland.

If Mkras can say Bruce Pearl then I get to push my guy too.

Moose forfeited his pick this go-round tho.

Funny you mentioned Howland, heard he wants back in the Big East, and over a 5 year period he recruited like Cal. Westbrook!! He got his rest from the stress at UCLA. He would be available

Depends on what you consider engaged. He truly tries to be engaged but Lavin is closest to Rico and trusted the head coaching duties to Hines last year during his bereavement last season instead. It was Hines first and only coaching experience while a man with 24 years of "head coaching" experience who had been the associate head coach at nationally ranked St. Louis was relegated to assisting a rookie. I was flabbergasted by that decision but none of Lavin's theatrics impress me any longer.

Are you talking about two years ago when Lavin missed the cuse game due to his fathers passing? Whitesell wasnt on our staff then.

no he is talking about when Lavins sneakers that he wore during games got a hole in them and he missed some time figuring out what to wear next

but apparently it doesn't take too much to get 72 flabbergasted

If a coaching change is made, Cluess is the early front runner by a mile.

Among mid-majors he is the surest bet to win here. He knows the program, the area, has won everywhere, money won't be an issue, he wouldn't use SJU as a stepping stone, and would likely retire from the job. IF a change is to be made, this will be the guy.
