Next Coach?

Does Monasch have to go too?
I've heard mixed reviews of him from people closer to the program than I am. Some like him, others obviously dont.

What do you guys think?

Without question at this point. The need to professionalize the entire Sports Program seems obvious.

LETS put 1/2 the problems on the players and 1/4 on the assistants and 1/4 on the coach
OUTSIDE OF Dlo,Pointer others are overated. Jordan as talent but has not produced according to his HS ranking Obekpa blocks shots thats it I do blame the staff for the recruiting picks but Hey a lot of good programs wanted these players They hustle and try hard can not fault them for playing up to there talent. Thats said we did lose some close games perhaps at least 3-4 that could have been ws .Then we would all be singing a different tune
SO Part of me says stay with coach and change some of his staff .Maybe our big recruiting class if it happens put problems to rest Call me optimistic

I don't believe for one second that our players are overrated, for the exception of Jordan, maybe, though he has the most potential. The problem is 90% depth and coaching. In the games we won, we needed something like four players to get at least 15 pts. Idk if that's exact but if our four scorers each attain their point averages in a game it doesnt add up to much. Granted if we had Jakarr still this teams dynamic would be different. We got no one serious to replace him.

Not to mention that our play book is frankly getting to perdictable. Based on momentum I can almost always tell what the play will be. We either need a new coach, or serious changes in Feburary all over.

Heard Syracuse is looking for a new mascot.

Villanova fans make fun of Steve Lappas (who I happen to think is a very good guy, not an excellent coach, but a good guy) because he was famous for saying, "WE DO OK!"

Too many Big East teams have adopted this "WE DO OK!" attitude and have settled for less. With Lavin SJU will continue to probably do less than OK. A guy like Purnell, who is probably a wonderful human being, should have been gone yesterday. But again, it's the "WE DO OK!" attitude that keeps these guys around.

Bottom line is last year with guys like Sanchez and Sampson on the roster, MOST coaches who do better than OK, would have taken that team to the Sweet 16. Lavin doesn't even dance. Last year SHOULD have been the big indicator, but for some reason people don't see this. So why are people so surprised about what is going on this year? On paper, last year was the better team.

Bringing in another Top 50 guy should not save Lavin's job, he has done it before, and his teams still underperform on the court. SJU, New York's team, the team that calls MSG home, should no longer try to do OK. Lavin needs to go. Last night when he was smiling at the end of the Creighton game, I thought is this guy kidding me?

He is a great guy I'm sure, but UCLA warned SJU about Lavin and nobody listened. They couldn't have been more on point. It is time to start doing better than OK and Lavin is not the answer.

SJU Fans, stop settling for OK.

Anybody else see Lavin laughing and smiling as he shook hands with the other coach at the end of the game? It looked like he was telling some jokes, and McDermott wasn't having it.

It seems like with what Lavin said recently about not having pressure to win here, these terrible post game quotes and situations like this, he clearly isn't taking this job seriously. He has no desire to win and no desire to make these kids better. He's working for a paycheck and that's it. That's why we need to go in a different direction with this program. That's without even considering the results on the court.

Quotes from post-game press conferences........

Steve Lavin: "There were so many things we did well."

Steve Lavin: "Statistically, it was one of our best games in league play"

Creighton coach Doug McDermott on SJU's early offensive struggles: "It took them a while to figure out what we were doing."

This one's the best...........
@NYPost_Brazille: Asked how they begin winning Big East games after all these losses Lavin: “If I had the answer to that, I wouldn’t be in this business pal."

I don't know what his tone was for this quote, but it may be that he can see the end.

He should have been fired long ago. He is in charge of one of the most incompetent, mind-numbing, side shows, otherwise know as the athletic department.

Even before Lavin, the AD must go. Bring in someone who understands responsibility and accountability. If the new president believes a successful basketball program is vital to the university's mass appeal, nothing short of cleaning out the athletic department will suffice.

I could give a flying crap what his demeanor or public statements are after a loss if we were 5-2 in conference. Scrutinizing every thing that comes out of his mouth or if he smiles after a tough loss when congratulating the other coach is pure bs. Criticize the collapse and put the appropriate blame on the staff - the rest is garbage.

Couldn't agree more. A lot of people are starting to over think this, including making statements that Lavin doesn't care, is lazy, doesn't want to win, etc. People who reach his level are by nature very competitive. No one, especially those in the spotlight, doesn't care about losing. I know D Lo cares, evidenced by his slamming the ball after catching some of Creighton's clean threes that went through the net.

I agree with your premise, but at this point, I would be thrilled with "ok." The program is perilously close to missing the NCAA's for a fourth consecutive year. Even "ok" programs make a tourney appearance once every four years.

@rumbleSBN: Lavin on why his team has struggled in conference play: "There's no one particular area that we've struggled. It's different every game."

Really enjoyed the pregame show segment "meet the Johnnies" where Lavin was interviewed and said that he enjoys "attending Sunday matinees and doing yoga, anything to get me away from basketball". If I'm the boss, nothing like hearing your highly paid underachieving employee talk about how badly he wants to get away from his job.

Mostly true, would argue 3 point defense and half-court scoring in last 10 minutes are an issue in almost every game (wins and losses). Those aside, he's right, myriad factors seem to develop game to game. Team and staff not just bystanders to these issues that present themselves, however, all ties back to inability to develop and sustain consistency.

If they do fire Lavin, my guess is it will come down to 3 coaches: Tim Cluess, Dan Hurley, or Bobby Hurley

If its one of the Hurley's can they bring Dad along as an asst? Aside from the coaching experience, can you imagine the recruiting prowess he'd bring? Not that Danny or Bobby wouldn't be able to establish a pipeline to NJ on their own.

Yeah, how could anyone think Lavin doesn't care abut winning. That's crazy talk, especially about the guy who demonstrated his passion by saying "I don't feel an inordinate degree of pressure to win at St. John's."

24/7 approach to hoops in that family for sure. No yoga & Sunday theater for them, :)

It's enticing to have one of the Hurleys and they'd recruit better locally right away, but I suspect either of them would leave at the first sign of success in the Big East for a bigger school with a bigger budget. Cluess, however, may think that having the St. John's job is the one he'd stay in a long time. We would certainly see better quality coaching.

Dad is a High School coach. He recruits eighth graders based on his reputation. Do you think that translates to bringing MCDAA's here?
