Next Coach?

Who would be on search committee ?

How about we pay for a search firm like most big boy colleges do for AD's and prominent coaching hires.

No need to waste money for something so easy.
Archie Miller is the 1st choice. Assuming the Indiana job is not available he would not hesitate to come to St. Johns, assuming he is not low-balled salary wise. If by some freak occurrence he doesn't accept, Bobby Hurley is the 2nd choice.

Its pretty simple now. This team makes the tourney, and advances, AND Lav brings in a stellar class for next season, he gets to keeps his job. If he does not, he is fired and replace by Archie Miller.

Why would Archie Miller come to St Jonh's without hesitation?

For all the same reasons our current coach came here. Don't think that Lavin is the only guy to realize that St. Johns is a "sleeping giant". You had better believe that Miller, Hurley and others are waiting and watching for Lav go get the boot, believing that they could bring St .Johns back and build something special here.

Sleeping giant??? Please. After 22 years since Looie retired we've been mostly asleep. We are more like Snow White, and only a prince's kiss could wake us up.

It has been one problematic hire after another. Hire the right guy-if it turns out that Lav can't get it done by next year-and the possibilities are endless. If I didn't think so, I would have been long gone by now.

You get the right athletic dept. in place, someone from a successful basketball program that can also market the program, and Lavin would be fine. Nobody backs him up. Haven't heard or read a comment expressing this year's team. This team will get on a roll strating tonight !!

Lavin made an appearance on Jeff Goodman's 10 coaches on the hot seat

I've recently learned from someone connected with the BOT that he is certainly on the hot seat, and some on the BOT are really not happy at all with the performance of the team. Personally, I really disagree with this, and think he is doing a fine job and better than what we have had in recent years.

I think that if your someone who is connected to a BOT member wants to stay connected to that person, he should not communicate to anyone what is likely a casual and private comment.

The first 2 Jarvis years were magical but we acted liked a mom and pop organization and nickel and dimed him to apathy. We basically destroyed a guy who had been a successful coach the twenty years prior. Some here could only dream of the record he had while coach at SJ. When will we be an elite 8 or NIT champs again under the same coach?

Drinking so early? He wanted to take the job offered by Michael Jordan and pressured SJU to bequeath the SJU job to his son. When Jordan balked at a long term deal, Jarvis miserably stayed, suddenly thought he was too big for college ball, and committed coaching suicide.

Archie Miller, the Hurleys, and the like will come here because (in theory) St Johns offers a lot more money than URI or Dayton could. I would suspect they make $400-600k, and look at Lavin's deal as a point of comparison for what SJU can offer them.

That's what it's all about. It's not about SJU being a sleeping giant (although it might be). The bottom line is the BIg East is a step up in prestige and pay from where mid major coaches are now (with the big exceptions of Few and Shaka).

Danny was making 600k before bonuses his 1st year at URI and then he got an extension so I don't know if his yearly pay got bumped but when he got the extension he turned down 5 years at 1 million per for rutgers.

Bobby I'm sure makes considerably less though

We wouldn't be competing against Dayton for Archie Miller...we'd be going up against at least a half-dozen school from power conferences. Same is probably true of Hurley by season's end...certainly after next season.

Also, don't discount the Dayton job or their ability to pay. They DESTORY us in attendance, averaging almost 13,000 fans a game, and I'm sure they sell way more merchandise.

Yeah, but Archie's published salary is short of $400K. Danny Hurley is making a package of around $800K from what I can find which is more than every coach in STJ history except Steve Lavin. Why, with what the new Pres has said about cutting costs, does everyone think STJ is going to keep spending what they no doubt think is a lavish amount of money on a basketball coach? That's what I'm wondering.

There was a lot of financial damage done in the FH era which is coming to light now. That is why we are cutting costs. Extending Lavin (despite what the resident "gurus" here claim) or paying Jay Wright/JT3 money for a coach isn't happening.

what kind of financial damage did Harrington do that's coming to light now ? I know they were offering early retirement packages but don't know anything else

Jarvis won with Frans kids. And how did we nickel and dime him? He was using us as leverage to get a coaching job in he pro's. Should we go over the guys Jarvis brought in to the program? If he was so great why did he wind up at some low level south florida school?

Yes, he won with Frans recruits and yes, he was interviewed for an NBA job. Leverage is questionable since elite programs easily replace coaches. We are one of the few that absolutely suck at it. Like Lavin he gambled with some recruits and had not the Pittsburgh scandal not occurred Keita would have never been dismissed. That happened after Jarvis was fired early in December and all hell broke loose. The man coached 18 years in D1 before coming to our cursed program. Ironically his only losing season was in his 3 season at St. John's. He coached 5 full years at St. John's winning 20+ games 4 of those 5 years with 3 NCAA tourney invites and an NIT championship. That my friend was in the old Big East with Uconn, Syracuse, ND, Pitt, UWV, Louisville, etc. Just giving the man his due credit. As for his coaching in Florida my guess is he basically retired.

Who, in their right mind, would want any of the latter three?

Why would Archie Miller come to St Jonh's without hesitation?

True! No smart up and coming coach would come here without examining the school's fan sites to gauge the classiness of the fans. One visit here and there would be great hesitation. Steve Mad Dog
Massielo would not hesitate for one second and neither would Mike Rice or Bobby Gonzalez.

The cost cutting going on at St. John's is not unique to us. College enrollment is down throughout the country and has been for several years and is predicted to continue for the foreseeable future. The age group of incoming freshmen, 18 - 19 year olds, has been declining and that's the cause of lower enrollment everywhere.

Just Google "declining college enrollment" and you will see all the articles and studies. Too numerous to cite here.
