Next Coach?

I don't want a retread. Some guys can find the old glory--Lon Kruger and Steve Fisher come to mind--but most are just flops.

We need to make a PR statement. Either go big for a Pitino, Donovan, Marshall or Smart, get an up-and-comer like Miller or a Hurley, or bring in Mullin with the right staff.

All of the above guys are tough coaches that recruits will still want to play for. No more players coaches.

I would have never supported a Mullin hire the last time around, but the guy is a workhorse. The right staff could help him transition back into the college game and the Big East in quick order. You know he'll be in the film room for 10 hour clips until he gets there. We'd own the headlines all year and the buzz would payoff with recruits immediately. Plus, his NBA experience (as an exec but as a player too) and connections could be a HUGE selling point. How many former NBA GMs are coaching?
Getting burnt out on this whole situation so because surprisingly my opinions have lately mirrored Marillac's I think for the time being I will just adopt Marillac's opinions. Stay smart Marillac and don't go off the reservation like you did all year until the season ended. ;) :)

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but it's very interesting.

I also don't know if he is saying this because of the articles he is seeing or if he actually knows something

Yeah, was posted elsewhere. But God, even Sheed, if this is his tweet, is buying into the Masiello propaganda machine.

I feel like some on here aren't willing to accept that it will be 2-3 years before we are competitive again. I don't mind it, we are rebuilding. I am fine with Danny or Mullin to come in and rebuild the program

I am willing to wait if that's what it takes to restore stability and sustained success to the program, however something tells me its going to happen sooner then many expect.

Their will never be sustained success in this program. Get used to it.

Sorry Salty I have to disagree.

I am torn between Mullin and Hurley. I see positives and negatives to both.

Imagine the headlines and good will if Mullin returns home the conquering hero, and reawakens the SJU ghosts of the 1980's? He hires at veteran X and O man to ride shotgun (he must have a ton on contacts), and brings Matt A. to recruit (after all, what SJU alum, no matter what age, can say no to Chris Mullin), and away we go.

But what if Mullin gets bored with the college game. My hope there is he set things up for a nice transition because he reestablished good will and moves the bar further between the SJU brand and the masses.

With Danny Hurley, maybe he becomes our Jay Wright. He takes this job, and runs with it. Implements a gym rat mentality in the program, and SJU becomes known for its tough, fundamentally sound, clutch plays, instead of what we have seen in the past. And he may even get a St. Anthony's kid to look at us again.

Of course I worry Hurley is wound too tightly. Will he implode?

All in all, if these are the frontrunners, I feel more comfortable about things moving forward in a positive direction. I can see why there is a split among the members here. We want the right choice, because we know how critical this hire is.

Let's face it, if our new president gets this right, he will already have accomplished more to benefit the basketball program in a year, than the last 20 years combined.

Mullin and Hurley have different styles, to be sure. But both are diligent, and love basketball. I believe both of these men have more positives than negatives going for them. And with that, I think for the first time since Carnesecca was here, I think SJU hoops will be in good hands.

Nice post Kran!

Now that's what I am talking about! Either. We are a top program or we aren't! I would love for Pitino, a big time coach for a big time program! We are a program that shouldn't take risks with mid majors or former legends! The list should be Pitino and Rick Barnes!

Which Pitino? ;)

I think we should at least be inquiring about Sr.

If we make a legit offer, it shows we are serious about turning this around and becoming a real powerhouse.

I'd love it, but know it will probably never happen for all the reasons many here have listed.

We would be back instantly, however.

Yes!!!!

Don't get your hopes up

I know, but I like to see that thought has been given to this.

To be fair, the article does not indicate that the university has given any thought to Pitino. It is a reach by Rubin that makes for a nice newspaper headline.

Pitino is not happening......let's stay focused.

Staying focused on what? Reading redmen.com? Perhaps you are negotiating a contract with Chris Mullin. The rest of us are reading press accounts and this board and making comments.

Donors are interested though, who could cover the cost. It'd probably come down to whether Rick is interested.

You know big donors are interested?

Correct Jack, it is easy for posters to spend other people's $$, :)

With the swirl of theories flying around, wouldn't be interesting if SJU administration already knows who will succeed SL? As a smart poster told me late last night, no better time to announce something than during Final Four week. Patience.

It says so in the article, unless I'm misinterpreting it.

It does not. It says that Repole would support "several different avenues" and that he has a mutual interest (horses) with Pitino.

This was all about selling newspapers.
