Next Coach?

mutual interest between Mas and SJU

Sounds like Sampson might still come depending and Rysheed and CO might stay also depending on who the hire is. I heard Coach Mas on the Michael Kay show and I was impressed with him. He reminds me of a young PJ Carlisimo.

What does it say about his character that after his school took him back, he is now lobbying to go somewhere else? If I were Manhattan, I'd fire him now. And I do not want him here. He has proven he is untrustworthy. I'm not ready to sacrifice our integrity to win.

I feel like some on here aren't willing to accept that it will be 2-3 years before we are competitive again. I don't mind it, we are rebuilding. I am fine with Danny or Mullin to come in and rebuild the program

I sure hope not. That's exactly the problem. We were just starting to get competitive again and now we are planning to start over again? If so then there needs to be a clear upgrade otherwise we are just going cheap and are destined to continue being mediocre at best.

The right move was a 3 year extension. If things didn't work out the next 2 years (no tourney) you Fire the guy and eat the 2 years/buyout. Believe me the Hurkeys, Mas, Cluess types would still be there then. That's not how we operate though. We are going cheap. Look at the coaches in the sweet 16 and tell me how many of those guys are "cheap" options?

Listen I hope Danny Hurley or whoever we get is great. I will support the next coach 100% and long after most have abandoned ship. However if we are changing coaches to save money and start another 2-3 year rebuilding effort its a huge mistake. We may not have any fans left in 2-3 years. The Big East and MSG could kick us out!

Everyone had the same concerns after Norm was let go...that is that the school was going to look to find someone on the cheap. Turns out they were willing to shell out good money for Lavin. IMO they will again pay what it takes, within reason, to get who they feel is the right person for the job

So per Zags little Pitino is letting it be known he's not interested. Hope these other "candidates" at least have an interest.

Why so testy & negative?

Negative perhaps, but testy?

I'm far from the only one who is not being positive about this move.

How's this for positive thinking? Perhaps little Pitino is not interested because he knows that the real Pitino is taking this job and he can take the Louisville job.

I just spoke to our buddy Ralph. He's in the same camp with me on this one. We're not sure if any of these guys being mentioned can do any better. Of course, we'll support the chosen one and be at just about every game.
Thx for scoop on Pitino. :)

I don't do scoops. That is clearly your territory.

Are you surprised about young Pitino declaring no interest?

We have no choice but to be okay with a rebuild. That situation is a big reason why Lavin lost support.

That said, anyone who was advocating for Lavin by claiming things weren't so bad, cannot now claim we are in a bad position because we let him go.

Not really. He's at a big university in a good league.

But it's somewhat irrelevant because I don't think SJU gets past their 1st or 2nd options before making a hire. Mullin or Hurley.

My opinion is that Big PItino has told little pitino that he already has a better job than SJU and stay put on this one.

Even if Dantes reopened and put mattresses on the tables, Rick is not coming here.. ahem, so to speak

Nice!

The cynical me say that Danny's intrigue with SJU begins and ends with a 6 year deal in the vicinity of $12 million. If SJU offered 6 years and say $7.5 million, Danny Boy would laugh and say cya.

Since Hurley began the season at 700K plus incentives, a deal like that would be essentially tripling his salary, and my guess is that's what it would require for him to grab a job nobody has been successful at.

Mullin on the other hand would accept a fair salary based on where he is in terms of experience. Should he do well, the school will tear it up and raise him.

Just my thoughts, and probably what SJU is finding out in their inquiries.

@NYPost_Brazille: Steve Masiello would make a lot of sense for #sjubb, and he's interested:http://t.co/0k15YvIvOy

Of course he is interested. He coaches in a crap league and this would be a huge pay upgrade.

Well, you certainly can't go wrong with anyone from the Manhattan College coaching tree.

Chiesa
Slice
Mahoney
Frashilla
Gonzo

I'm sure I'm missing a few. Not one of them panned out as a head coach after Manhattan. I don't want Massiello at all, but if he's hired the way I see it the odds are in our favor that he'll be a huge success.

Absolutely! Great post.......!

Buzz goes along way for a quick rebuild.

Win the press conference. Hire Chris.
Substance over style. Who cares about a one day buzz press conference. Buzz will come signing talent and than winning. we won the press conference with Lavin and fired him 5 years later.

The reason the last few hires haven't had success here is either:
A. They weren't qualified for the job(BM + NR), or:
B. They self -destructed(FF + MJ)

It has nothing to do with the job itself and everything to do with who the school hired.

There are reaons for everything, of course, but no coach in his right mind thinks this is an easy job to be successful.

Maybe he is being "testy" Really could care less about Pitino Jr. since he is not a SJU target.

I am surprised people are being so impatient about this process. Look at Texas. They've been rumored to be firing Rick Barnes since they got bounced from the tournament and still haven't pulled the trigger. The rumor is that they want to go after Greg Marshall but he was unavailable until Thursday's loss. They are probably gauging interest but in the meantime Barnes appears to be a lame duck.

I hope SJU is doing their homework. The one thing I worry about is if Mullin really wants the gig but SJU goes in a different direction, I hope it doesn't damage the school's relationship with Chris.

And I'm not interested in going out with Kate Upton.

Unless you think there was a decent chance that he was going to bring it at least 2 of the 6 decent recruits STJ was still being mentioned with, keep Sampson and maybe even RJ. I don't think CO cares about Lavin, he's such a dope he probably thinks he's a victim. So let's see who is on the roster in September and then we can decide how bad a position the team is in. A quick hire of a home run would erase any doubt. But Mass ain't no HR. If there's school interest it means the others have made it clear they won't be lowballed.
