Next Coach?

Yes!!!!

Don't get your hopes up

I know, but I like to see that thought has been given to this.

To be fair, the article does not indicate that the university has given any thought to Pitino. It is a reach by Rubin that makes for a nice newspaper headline.

Pitino is not happening......let's stay focused.

Donors are interested though, who could cover the cost. It'd probably come down to whether Rick is interested.

You know big donors are interested?

It says so in the article, unless I'm misinterpreting it.

It does not. It says that Repole would support "several different avenues" and that he has a mutual interest (horses) with Pitino.

This was all about selling newspapers.

I was thinking this: "Vitaminwater mogul Mike Repole, a St. John's supporter, has ties to Rick Pitino and would support the school going after the esteemed coach."

But yeah after rereading it the references are a little vague. Something like:

"The most interesting lobby is the one that has been pushing — first quietly and now a bit louder — Rick Pitino."

Could mean donors but also could be fans.

Correct Jack, it is easy for posters to spend other people's $$, :)

With the swirl of theories flying around, wouldn't be interesting if SJU administration already knows who will succeed SL? As a smart poster told me late last night, no better time to announce something than during Final Four week. Patience.

Are you pretty confident they already have someone picked, and if so I'm assuming Mullin?

I'm good with Mullin but he would be a question mark without experience. He'd need to prove himself and the honeymoon would only last for so long.

Forget trying to make a splash during the Final Four weekend. Get your guy in there as soon as possible so he can begin assembling a staff and begin reaching out to Jordan, Obekpa, Brandon Sampson and others.

Staying focused on what? Reading redmen.com? Perhaps you are negotiating a contract with Chris Mullin. The rest of us are reading press accounts and this board and making comments.

CLASSIC! :side:

Whoever comes in, if they get BSamp back and keep obekpa and Jordan how good can we be next year ?

Okay, but depth still a significant problem.

Think with Doughty and thompkins included we are fine in the backcourt. Our front court needs help with it only being CO, ADR, and Amar. But we aren't that far away from depth being fine

At this point, whether it's Mullin, Danny or Mas, just want them to get them hired and try to get the best class for next year as possible...Hate long drawn out stuff..

There's a very good chance Jordan and Sampson are here .
I think by Tues the new coach, even if not announced, will be reaching out to them.

The new coach's priority needs to be Diallo. Completely unknown if the coach wants Obekpa, if Obekpa has an interest in returning, or whether the school wants him.

New coach and especially his staff will be all over diallo. And rightfully so.

Exactly. We don't have time for this nonsense.

Like Paultz, I have a feeling the next coach is already in place. And if that is in fact the case, I suspect it will be Mullin. We may just be waiting for the announcement. If so it will be a nice story and will make a big splash. However then the actual work will have to be done, and while we have faith, it will take a whole lot more than faith to make a winner.

Also like Paultz, my first choice would have been Danny Hurley.

I also think that there is something to the Pitino rumors, but I think the outcome of that was Pitino pushing Masiello. While I would probably take Miller, both Hurleys, and maybe even Rick Barnes ahead of Mullin, I would take Mullin by a country mile over Masiello. The man has no honor.

I think the Cluess option is probably not worth mentioning.

My guess is we will know later this week.

You're right. Under this senario (which, to be fair, is the best case scenario), we could then add a serviceable Juco or transfer.

I am still intrigued by Craig Randall and wouldn't mind following up on him. I would also give Jay Henderson a look.

Ready to part ways with CJ and Stewart (not worth scholarships)

I agree with almost all of this.

What's wrong with Rick Barnes?

Overall - 604-314 in 28 years
Schools:
George Mason 20-10
Providence 108-76
Clemson 74-48
Texas 402-180

3 time regular season conference championships
1 conference tournament championship

22 NCAA appearances
Overall 21-22
I Final Four

A lot of positives here. More than the negatives. Is he within our salary range? Does he want to come back east?

I would add that in 28 years of coaching, only two losing seasons: 14-17 Providence 1991-92 and 16-18 Texas 2012-13.

Below .500 conference records with both Clemson and Providence.

So, is that bad in the overall scheme of things? The site I used, sports-reference.com, only had overall records for each of his years of coaching. Not broken down by conference. Thanks.

The next coach must have passion. He must be the brightest light in the gym and bigger then the the name of the school. That will attract the players. If he has this quality he will inherently have the skill set to leads us.

We must have a a coach when you say his name the response is ........Oh he is the coach of St. John's. He must be bigger then the team in order to bring in stars.

EG. IZZO, PITINO, BOEHEIM, KNIGHT, WOODEN, AND OF COURSE LOU.

Looks like D. Hurley is off the table.

Jeff Goodman ‏@GoodmanESPN With Rhode Island's Danny Hurley signing a new 6-year deal, it's safe to take him off board for St. John's, source told ESPN.
