Next Coach?

Lav is not going anywhere...

Signing one recruit doesn't change the overall situation.
He'll be in the announcing booth next season.

I think the criticism of Lavin is overdone. I am of the opinion he will be back next season and I want him back at st johns next season. I also still believe that as long as we keep the parts of this team that we need ie the six man rotation that we have- this team will start winning and will be a force in the BE as well as the Big Dance. Jordan had an awful game against Nova and that isnt going to happen again. This team is going to get back on track and on the move. Go Redmen!!! my apologies to the politcally correct generation

I feel great Lavin landed Sampson, but new President, in my opinion, will render a contract decision at season's end after a thorough evaluation of the program.
Sampson joining us is a positive, but I am not going to assume it has any marked impact on the big picture at this point. Hopefully SL leads us to the NCAA Tourney & lands a high quality class. Both are daunting challenges. Getting Brandon is a positive step in that journey.
spot on.IMO

If he does not want to be in school, it doesn't matter if he's drafted or not. He'll find a place(D league, Europe) to play. Hopefully that's not the case ,but its a distinct possibility.

If it's true that he keeps taking off for Philly, what's he gonna do when he's in Bosnia, or even in Idaho? If he wants to make enough money to take care of his family, he needs to work himself into being an NBA draft pick. It's a shame that he can't see the damage he is doing to his future.

Completely agree with you, now all we have to do is convince Sheed :)

With all due respect Dee, this is the equivalent of those posters who called for Lavin's head immediately after Sheed took his leave. IMO no one event between now and the end of the season should determine whether Lavin stays or goes. Its cumulative and I'm sure the admin is viewing it as such.

Which one event did dee site as the reason why he thinks Lavin should be back? I missed it.

I assumed, maybe incorrectly after re-reading his post, that his position is based on the Sampson commit.

If I had to venture a guess, excising Lavin would require another massive effort to start basketball at ground zero. Gempeshaw has so many substantive issues on his plate - declining enrollment and the loss of revenue, improving academics, and a plethora of issues - that I'm not sure he wants to address whether the team is winning enough. Unless the wheels fall off, I think it may be reasonable to predict that Lavin may be extended 2 years, with one guaranteed and another that includes a buyout. In that regard Gempeshaw would buy some time in focusing his attention on basketball without making a long term commitment.

Well, if he plays in Iraq, and goes AWOL, we could always trade 5 Gitmo detainees to get him back

I don't know if that's prudent Beast.
I can't see Gemepshaw kicking the can down the road just because he's new to the job. The coach's contract is up, now's the time to make a decision, I expect he'll do a thorough review and decide to retain him or not. Plain and simple.
If Gemepshaw is pleased with the direction of the program, and likes Lavin, I expect he'll get a 3-4 year extension.

I'm not saying it's prudent or not. I also know that Gempeshaw has a lot more important business than focusing his attention on shredding the basketball program and going back to square one. You could be right, and honestly it won't bother me much either way what he decides. I do think as I've mentioned that for right now I'm rooting for the team to turn it around, root for them to get a bid, and if that means Lavin stays, then it's deserved and out of my control.

Having been a college admission representative for 9 years and an educator for more than 42 years, I can tell you that a highly successful St John's basketball team would likely boost the application rate and enrollment.

I know it sounds ridiculous but it's true. Kids pick colleges for crazy reasons. I have a good friend whose son went to Indiana because Bobby Knight was their basketball coach. Go figure.

I met an alum from Michigan several years ago who told me that one year, their application rate increased by more than 15 percent because they beat Notre Dame in football that fall.

Having a successful athletic program has a big impact on many high school seniors and plays a significant role in the schools they choose to attend. While the new President has a lot on his plate, making a decision about the future of the men's basketball program is not an insignificant one.

I read that Georgetowns BB success in the 80s really increased their applications.

I always heard that one Doug Flutie pass put BC over the top

This is absolutely true. There have been studies done on it. I wouldn't doubt the Mullin years had a noticeable impact on SJU enrollment.

I agree whole-heartedly. The best scenario is where the team and coach are successful, and an extension is therefore deserved.

Not only does it impact applications - it also has an impact on fund raising.
i.e. see the massive increase in donations from the Johny Manziel impact at Texas A&M:

"Aggie boosters have been showing Johnny Manziel the money. The Austin-American Statesman is reporting that Texas A&M University raised $740 million in donations in the past year (ending August 31), a 70 percent increase over their previous record. That was nearly double the $400 million raised by the University of Texas over the same period."

I'm pretty sure those donations are going to be down this year with oil closing at less than $46 a barrel... better for you and me at the gas station though!
