Next Coach?

Danny Hurley.

The game threads will be interesting after each tech he gets :)

do you really seeing this program sticking with this hot head for half-a-decade or more?

Winning is all that matters. You think SJU would let him go if they were ranked in the top 25 during the last 2 years on his contract, while doing damage in the ncaa? Haaa

Is Danny Hurley the next gonzo? If things don't go well will he go off his rocker?

Who do you suggest, your guy Cluess? Someone else? Thx

I want to see the school bring in someone better than Lavin. Someone with experience coaching at this level. Let's hope they can attract a less risky candidate than Hurley or Cluess. Unfortunately, our program had trouble in the prior two searches. It sounds promising tonight to hear that coaches may be interested. I just wonder what the press and talk radio will be writing and saying if this opening lingers into late next week. And turnover does not always work. Just look at BC and SHU. Two similar programs that pushed out coaches for not winning enough.

SJU has to spend this Fox money and hire a big name guy who will recruit nationally and compete for the best players. They have to do what SDSU did 12 years ago and find that Steve Fisher. I'm afraid they may have just lost him.

By the way, I would take Cluess over D Hurley or Mas any day of the week just to read the reaction of the anti-Lavin crowd on this board. It is funny that almost every Lavin basher on this board also dislikes Cluess.

Think it over? Pitino is from New York, has family still in NY, has an apartment in NY. He was extremely close to taking the Providence job a few years ago.

If the right booster wants to pay him you never know.

Has won 85% and 77% of his conference games. He worked full time in a real job while coaching till he was hired by Iona.

Beast, do you think he would leave Iona, or would he remain there out of loyalty to them?

It's a good question. My impression of him is that he's a very high integrity guy, with a strong internal moral compass. After just being extended he may be off the market. Then again, in coaching, you have to strike when a great opportunity presents itself.

Despite a not so easy commute and a nice bump in income, TC has lived a relatively modest life in the same home 10 minutes from SJU. I can't think of a more perfect situation for him than SJU, but then again, he is secure as heck at Iona without the headaches that go with our job.

Bottom line, if offered, I think he comes here. What do you think?

Paultz, to me, all in all, this is the safest choice SJU could make. I'd be stunned if he couldn't win here by year 3, given the current mess of a roster he will inherit. I'll tell you one thing - I'd bet the house he already knows our entire roster situation, including who's committed and considering SJU.

That's what I thought 11 years ago, and then again 5 years ago. Didn't happen then, and it sure ain't gonna happen now.

Sorry, I'm an emotional guy and feel sorry for poor Lavin walking away with just $2MM. Seriously, I really don't know who they can attract to come here. The college towns are much more attractive to coaches and their families. We have a local hoops scene full of guys who want to take you down. None of the last three coaches worked well with them. Fran was not here long enough.

The guy at Marshall would be least risky. I have a hunch Miller is never leaving the state of Ohio. Let me talk to Joe Jagde tomorrow night and we'll come up with some names.

Oh, How much is our budget? Is Repole willing to sell Stay Thirsty to finance this?

Also, when it comes to being direct and honest in response to questions, he is the anti-Lavin. He makes sense, is honest almost to a fault. More than anything, the guy is a total basketball junkie.

He recruited Danny Green - better than anyone we've had for 15 years.

He "makes sense." What's that got to do with anything. This is Division 1 basketball. :(

I don't know. There are people who turn down money and stay put. Hurley's father for one

It's really funny. I haven't seen him since he took the Iona job. He told me how he was the next guy in line to be interviewed at Hofstra before they stopped and made a hire. I asked him about people mentioning him for the St. John's job, and he said something like "That's idiotic". I know inside I was blushing since I was one of those idiots. But that time he was right. Now he should be considered.
