Next Coach?

Well, Pitino isn't available anyway until at least Monday after tonight's win. ;)

Funny, but I remember dreaming about us hiring him last time.

I think it will continue to be a dream unless there are some serious donors on board.

Hey, I continue to play lotto every damn week knowing I'm never going to win. I guess this is no different.

Suppose SJU wants a BIG NAME and they are willing to pay? A proven winner. Can we think of anyone realistic?

I know half of you will think this is crazy, but I could see Pitino being interested. He's a New Yorker. His legacy at Louisville, UK,and Providence have been cemented. There is really nothing he can add to it. Louisville doesn't have it's typical potential going forward.

If I were him, restoring the program he grew up with to its former glory would be a great challenge and even better accomplishment. Plus, he could set up his on perfectly to take over a potential dynasty that Minnesota could never become.

$$$ would be a hold up of course.

Pitino made $5.8 mil in 2014. Has great facilities, environment, staff, team, incoming recruits.
SJU would have to invest millions$ to upgrade CA & related facilities for starts. Too rich for a 63 yr. old coach.

I realize the obvious holdups and I understand it is a long shot. He's 63 and he's made over a hundred mill in his life, so I think if the money is close, he'd take it. The challenge and potential reward of restoring St. John's to the level it was when he was growing up and when he was coaching in the Big East (first time around) has to be appealing to him. If we did pony up (small pun intended) the $, I think he'd come. I'd wager that we won't though.

B Hurley, Rich Pitino, R Barnes, Jeff, Capel, Bryce Drew

What a joke.

There is much pessimism on this board after Lavin and the school parted ways. I understand that he got us into two NCAA tournaments (both one and dones), he recruited some good players that contributed well(Harrison,Pointer, Harkless,Sampson, Obekpa,Jordan among the best).

However, he made many strange decisions and coments. Burning Balamou's redshirt for one game. Saying he was a bad tournament coach after the Providence blowout, Starting Ndiaye for the Georgetown game. The team played some great games that we will all remember but there were tons of clunkers as well. However the failure to show up for last seasons NIT when we should have made the NCAA's, the horrible finish to this season and the drop off our recruiting. (I know he was going to land a stellar recruiting class in April, just like he did last year) makes me satisfied that it was time for a change.

I certainly do not want to program to go backwards. This will be a rebuilding job, but a good coach like Danny Hurley can do it. He has a team at Rhode Island next season that would easily beat whatever Lavin could have put on the court for the 2015-16 season. He loves basketball, understands the game and has good connections. I think he can achieve the same success that Xavier has and maybe approach Gonzaga. Maybe he jumps for a better job and maybe he fails. Maybe he turns down the job and we have to hire something else. None of those scenarios scares me as we all have been through hell since the Pittsburgh incident. The Lavin era was better than before but is it really something to get excited about. Lets all get together and hope for better.

Don't worry the interest in Pitino will again boost Pitino's earnings at Louisville.

ZanMan, love your optimism, but I think "dream" & "dreaming" are the key words here.

You guys think that a school with a mission statement like this is going to ante up 6 Mil for a basketball coach?:

I can't believe the talk about Rick Pitino. It would take 5-6 mil, St. John's was choking over what they were paying Lavin. The reason this conversation is even be taking place is because they wanted Lavin for the same or less than he was making. I love my Alma Mater but let's be honest they do run it like Mom and Pop.

St. John's has been on a cost cutting mission for a couple of years. Many people have been offered buyouts. I'm sure they wanted to cut coaching saaries. Lavin may have fallen on his sword fightng a cut in the staff's salaries as well as his.

Pitino ain't coming.

Boston U to Providence College to Knicks to Kentucky to Celtics to Louisville and then St. John's? Sorry I don't see it.

I am sure we all have dream coaches but again before you throw their names out please think real heard on why they would want to leave their current situation to come here especially if they have no real ties to the school. Big time coaches are not falling over themselves for this job. And we are not ponying up more than what Lavin was making if that. We are not getting a top notch coach from a big time program for numerous reasons.. What we will winded up with is a mid-major coach, some top assistant from a good program who might not have done well his first time out oh a retread. That does not mean we campn't come up with a winner.

$5.8 million is above the means of all but a tiny number of universities. Lavin was making a very decent salary. Had he accomplished more he would still be coach.

Beast, how many posters here would be happy if their compensation today was the same for the past
5 years?

@rumbleSBN: On Danny Hurley, one of the top candidates for the St. John's head coaching job.http://t.co/bfkic9fRPV

Danny Hurley coached two years at Wagner, certainly the minor leagues of coaching: 13-17, then 25-5

Three years at URI: 8-21, 14-18, and 23-10 this season. One NIT Bid (this year)

Is it a little early to consider him our home run hire? Lavin's record at SJU in comparison and in turning around a dead program, looks superior.
