Next Coach?

What has any of the names being thrown around as the next coach have on a Jay Wright? JT3? Chris Mack? Ed Cooley? cause that is who they will be coaching against, and recruiting against. We see how well Williard has done locally, had a mutiny on his team due to doing favors for local H.S. programs. We need a big name coach not a mid major maybe..Why are we selling this program short, if we are to be competitive in the B.E. we sure better get a coach who is up to the task, otherwise Norm Roberts here we come

If the school is going to spend big $$$, I hope it's Billy Donovan.

I'd rather the school not break the bank on a coach. Therefore I want Danny Hurley.

Danny already has established NJ HS and AAU ties. He already has relationships with current NBA players. He has already landed an NBA prospect in EC Matthews. And he will bring sorely lacking discipline to the program.

Does he want a bigger job? Sure, who doesn't? But leave us in a good position before you leave is all that I ask.

Give him the keys and a solid Xs & Os guy and see what he can do within 5 years.

Cluess- No. Can't sustain winning and can't get guys to the NBA
Mullin- Nice, but no. I'd love him as an AD but not as a coach.
Bobby Hurley- I could see him falling into depression after the honeymoon phase wears off
Masiello- NO. I see him as a lesser version of Lavin. Big talk. Would be ready to bolt ASAP.
Mark Jackson- Yes, but won't happen.
McKillop- Yes, but won't happen.

It's gotta be Danny.

Not much talent in the NYC area next few years, and that will be his biggest problem..And if a Duke or Kentucky, or UNC or even Cinn, or UConn want that kid, guess what Danny losses 9 out of 10 times

Here you go what about Larry Brown, he has done an amazing job at SMU, I mean really SMU? and he is a NY guy..Could groom a replacement for him on his staff, and get maybe 3 years out of him.. He would have us big time in the news, and great press, and is beloved

I'd like 2 things in the next coach.

1- A lifer. Someone who wants this job bad and will not leave for another job. The candidate you said above who would bolt ASAP would NOT bolt from this job. (Provided we continue to pay him if he succeeds). His failed move last year was because he knew this season would be a struggle at Manhattan and with a new AD he didn't get along with. His mindset was take USF and if his dream job opens up he can easily come home.

2- I want someone who can be embraced by the NYC community both fans and the bball people. For far too long its been divided and fractured. This is NYC's team and we need NYC bball people behind it.

Isaiah Thomas. Now, I know what you're thinking, guys, but... He is familiar with NY, knows where the locker rooms are in MSG, has coaching experience. If kids don't know him from his legendary days at Indiana and the Pistons, their parents will. A legend at every level. Olympic gold.

This is a can't miss hire that will have us on the back pages of every paper in the NY metro area, if bot the entire country.

Think about it long and hard before you post your reply.

Why are you assuming DH can't recruit nationally or internationally.

URI roster:
Michigan (NBA prospect)
Wisconsin
Germany
Philly
Tennessee
Staten Island (would be an All Big East player)
Nigeria
NJ
Rhode Island
Massachusetts (Jared Terrell- a kid we chased)
Florida
Lithuania (Rutgers transfer)
http://www.gorhody.com/sports/m-baskbl/2014-15/roster

So you accepted this exact same roster makeup from Lavin, but you won't accept if from Hurley?

Who says every recruit has to be a homerun swing?

Jersey pipeline would be established from Day 1. You're not going to be left out of the conversation with top NJ recruits. Not happening.

Hurley will recruit his behind off. And we'll get some under the radar kids.

Biggest issue will be an Xs & Os coach. But we won't have this lack of effort problem that we've seen over the past 2 years.

Danny has David Cox on his staff at URI. He's a DC guy who I assume has good connections along the east coast. I wonder if he would bring all his assistants along? Or maybe mix in a new one?

I don't think the lifer coach is realistic today. Too much money involved especially with the football conferences. And the NCAA makes it too easy for coaches to break contracts, pack up and leave.

Masiello was just going to use USF as a stepping stone to somewhere else I believe.

To me he's too much of a loose cannon (not to say DH isn't). I think he'd bring more trouble and scrutiny than what Pres G is looking for image-wise.

Just imagine the outcry if we had a Keith Thomas situation under him.

Telling Michael Kay that SJU could compete for an NCAA championship was just the same nonsense that we've just had for 5 years. We don't need that over promise under deliver garbage anymore.

Tom, I agree about a getting a higher level coach, but have to point out that Cluess matched Cooley when they developed a nice rivalry. Cooley has nothing on him. Cluess and Mas have had more success at their level than Willard.

If we go cheap, I would prefer them over the hurleys.

I would go with Cluess because one of my friends talks to him and I could act like hot shit in section 114 and impress mike maher, Paultzman and weatherman with my inside info.

Isaiah Thomas? he who totally messed up the Knicks salary cap, and it took a master Donnie Walsh to undo it

Who undermined one of the best coaches of all time (Larry Brown) by allowing players to whine to him.

Allegedly did drugs with Dolan.

Allegedly was messing with an MSG staffer.

Attempted suicide - remember the Lunesta thing

Nasty man who kissed MAgic on the cheek and then later speculated that HIV didnt come from sex with women.

Once said that Larry Bird would be regarded as an average player is he wasn't white.

NO THANKS.. His name should never ever be mentioned again

Beast, I think (read: hope) SimplyRed is joking.

Gosh, I hope so....

Absolutely positively cannot hire a guy with X&Os deficiency. Not even a guy who is seen as only average in that area. None of this "he can hire an X&O strategist as an asst" nonsense. The next has to himself be the X&O guru. I have not seen Danny Hurleys RI or Wagner teams play, but if there is some issue that he or any other candidate may be an average guy in that regard, then he should not be a candidate. I personally prefer Bobby btw the two Hurleys.

But the two guys who should be number 1 targets are Archie Miller and Gregg Marshall. They should aim high if they want to be a major program and spend the necessary $$$. I think Archie would come for $2 mil + and think they should even be willing to ante up $3 mil+ to nab Marshall. If they are thinking they are going to go cheap then the program is screwed and possibly the conference along with it. St. Johns owes it to the Big East conference and to the college sports world in general to get it right this time.

There's two tiers.

Tier 2: the Hurleys, Mullin, Jackson, etc. The names listed often. They MAY be successful.

Tier 1: the unlikely big timers like Smart, Donovan, Pitino, Miller, etc. They WILL be successful.

We don't have the roster or time for an experiment. If they want guaranteed success, tier 1 is the only option.

I am hoping like everyone else here thst if mullin is the next coach that he will be very successful. But I still have serious doubts about yet another coaching change. I think many here simply live in the past and think that just by hiring mullin we will be a top 10 team. mullin won't be doing the shooting or passing. It looks like we already lost Sampson who will probably end up haunting us a la polle . The clock won't be turned back to 1985 by hiring someone who never coached before. I compare it to a baseball manager. People announcing or watching games often second guess moves but when you are in the hot seat it isn't that easy to manage. Mullin despite his background will have a lot to learn and will probably wind up being outsmarted by experienced coaches. this program is all.but dead and the school is counting on the mullin name to keep fans in the seats. We will soon be on the level of fordham or wagner.

Cluess will only be an option if Mullin, both Hurleys, and then several second-tier candidates are unavailable or uninterested. For whatever reason, he is not viewed as a realistic candidate for the SJU job (except by some posters here and elsewhere).

Precisely.

The pessimism is unreal. Let's see how this plays out. Sometimes change bring good results. We haven't hired a coach and so many are scared. Don't lose the faith.
