New court design at Carnesecca

Looks like DePaul had had at leaat two versions of skyline.

I do like that ours includes MSG, One World Trade, Statue of Liberty etc... maybe tower of a bridge as well would have given some additional dimension

The only one thing I would have added is the New York Stock Exchange on the left because it's ironic and known throughout the world

I could have lived with that. Pretty much anything is better than the Red Storm

It was my understanding that, when the committee was formed to come up with the new nickname, they were charged to incorporate the word "red" into it. Supposedly, the reasoning behind this was to pay homage to the red uniforms that our teams wore back in the day.
That was my understanding as well.

Figure I am in the minority here, but I don't love the skyline. Never liked it on DePaul's floor either. Feel like it takes away from an otherwise sharp design. Guess I am just a traditionalist.

I'm actually with you on this opinion, but will allow the design to grow on me and maybe my opinion will change. There are a bunch of different schools who use their city skyline on the court, I always though it felt a bit amateurish as in, a novelty for smaller towns who might find it amusing. UCF is another who comes to mind, but there's is more over the top and even has a rollercoaster in it. I may be in the minority who appreciates the more clean cut look and having our reputation as NYC's team speak for itself, along with having the words stating as such on the bassline.

Yes that is one part and the other is they wanted a unique name (no Red Raiders for example).

But the committee failed in my opinion because the name is not marketable. Red Storm never caught on. Fans now chant “Let’s go Johnnies” more than anything today.

Red Johnnies would have been better, among others. Shame that a university in New York would mishandle an opportunity for a marketing boon, that comes with a name change.

Further proving Red Storm was unsuccessful, the most popular merchandise are the ones with only the university name or St.J logo without the nickname.

Oh and about the St.J, there was another bumble. SJU was sleek and it is still what I use today. No one knows St. Joe’s.

Rant off.

I always felt Tom Clancy’s bestselling novel, “Red Storm Rising” was a contributing factor. Someone on the Committee liked the sound of Red Storm and pushed it.

To be honest, there were some others nicknames on the list that were worst.

Dropping the “Red” and keeping “Storm” has better possibilities marketing wise IMHO and as bad as some of us might feel about it as a nickname, it is not the worst nickname in our Conference or our State.

“Johnnies” as a secondary or alternate reference to our nickname I can live with but not as our official nickname.

Don’t get me started on the SJU and STJ decision which I actually think was a bigger blunder than the selection of Red Storm.

I enjoy Tom Clancy books. I also enjoy cooking.

But in no way would I ever endorse a name change to “Red Sauce”.

They never thought it out. And yes, losing “SJU” was an abysmal failure. These issues are additional components that further proved the university could not bet the winner of a one horse race.

No need for "rant off". You nailed it on every point.

Every t-shirt, hoodie or hat I've purchased says "St. John's" – not as an act of protest but no one recognizes us as the Red Storm. They could go back to the drawing board to start again without losing a thing.

Drop "Storm."

St. John's Red à la Syracuse Orange.

Merch emblazoned with the non-offensive "Red Men" as opposed to "Redmen."
I hate “Syracuse Orange” as a nickname and would not like “St. John’s Red“ any more than “Stanford Cardinal”.

I would take any of the following (in no particular order):

1. Red Sea — it is biblical and Pitino is SJU’s Moses.

2. Redbirds — I know it is taken already, but it is a tribute to the old red NYC subway cars.

3. Red Coats — Embrace being the college basketball enemy. Before each game have a guy run out on the floor yelling “The Red Coats are coming”.

4. Red Johnnies — Fans chant “Let’s Go Johnnies” already.

5. Red Ferrari — Everyone loves a red Ferrari.

6. Redrum — Have the player introductions lead off with the line “Here’s Johnny”.

Red Lobsters. Team up with the restaurant.
All you can eat hush puppies. Serving nothing but lobster rolls throughout CA.
Plastic bibs for the first 100 who enter. Who wouldn't love an oversized lobster mascot running around.
