Kanacevic is a better college basketball player than any of the StJohns bigs.

He's big, tough and fundamentally sound. And was right under our noses. Can't fault Lavin for him. Played at Hofstra for a year then transferred. Pre-Lavin

He was available as a transfer when half of Lavin's recruits were not qualifying.

Yes. Let's take some player that no one knew about until tonight and call Lavin out for not getting him. Lavin has been a bad coach for us IMO but the stuff you guys blame him for...

Jackie boy if you lived in NYC you would have heard about Halil! Terrific rebounder in high school and at Hofstra. While Pelle was not qualifying this kid was transferring. A missed opportunity by coaches who were unfamiliar with him. Half the battle is recruiting and both Lavin and Chiles are overrated in that area. I agree with you about the coaching but that is what Whitehead was hired for??

I'm one of Lavin's harshest critics, but what's right is right. On May 6th 2010 it was announced that Kanecevic was transferring from Hofstra to St. Joes. On May 31st 2010, St. Johns hired Steve Lavin. Not saying Lavin would have had any interest in the kid, you can't blame him for something that happened before he was hired.

Jack as I said earlier, Lavin can't be blamed for this one since the transfer happened before he was hired. But it's not our job to know about a kid like this, it's the staff's job. Especially since there are kids like this (and Lucky Jones and Ron Roberts and Jordon Aaron............) in our backyard(NY + NJ) every year. And frankly I don't think this staff is identifying and targeting any of these kids.

Halil announced he was transferring just weeks before Lavin took the job. It wasn't Lavin's job to know about him it was Tony Chiles. He was not targeted that June before he enrolled at Joes because we were in California recruiting future transfer Dwayne Polee.

This article In the Daily News reporting his transfer was written almost a month before Lavin was hired:http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/c...ing-hofstra-st-joseph-hawks-article-1.445087. Like I said, I can blame Lavin for a lot, but I can't blame him for not recruiting a kid(at another D1 school) before he was hired.

what does it matter. Joe's is out in the first round anyway and now their posters are killing Martelli. What a lovely world.

My bracket is dreadful, the upsets I did pull the trigger on (St Joes, NC STATE) didn't happen and the ones I didn't pull the trigger on (Dayton, NDSU, Harvard) did.

Missed opportunity?
The kid was ranked as the 184th best center in the country coming out of high school.

Halil wasn't even the best player on SI at that time no less NYC. I am surprised Lavin didn't take a look at Hassan Martin also from Curtis more recently who eventually went to URI.

For one day it feels good to be winning the Redmen.com ESPN bracket challenge!
