1.circa 1986 in NCAA as a favorite and lose early
versus
2.2022 we don’t even make the damn tourney!
General we lost to Auburn with Chuck Person, Barkley had declared for the draft in 84.
if you recall Walter got injured in the opening round and without the Wooden Award winner at 100% we were in trouble.

Berry played vs Auburn. They were much too tough in the paint for SJU.

so ?
Walter the Truth  played or did not?

I said before he played but he was no where near at 100%. He was limping the entire game.

Berry played and limped his way to about 20 points. Person and Chris Morris killed us in a very ugly game. Jackson was way off and Louie turned to Hempel for major minutes in desperation.  Game exposed our lack of depth once Berry’s superhuman powers were kryptonited. Edit - Marco had been declared ineligible before tourney.  He at least would have been five fouls and a body.  The whole thing was deflating after glorious BE tourney.

Auburn exposed us and Louie was flummoxed.

By the way, I hate this tournament.

General - don't feel bad. I used to get that mixed up all the time. Person was a load as well. Auburn's all time leading scorer I believe.

The way Villanova is playing right now , they could Win it all again .  They don’t get rattled and they play their style game in game out . And , they don’t piss away points from the foul line .         As for Gonzaga , Holmgren got a lot of bad calls . The Tournament officiating , like the regular season , has been awful !   You would think with 3 Refs , they could do better .    Back to Gonzaga . They play a very good OOC schedule but , in their WAC Conference only St Mary’s and Brigham Young seem to give them some competition . Not enough but , they usually lose a game or 2 to the Gael’s or the Mormons .        When they get to the NCAA , they face teams from tough conferences that play a physical style . Arkansas is one of those teams .                           Would the Zags ever consider the BE, if offered ?    Who knows?  But , probably would have to add another team or 2 to deal with the Travel Logistics .    If I were Advising Val Ackerman , I would move DePaul, Marquette , Creighton to a West Division of the BE along with Gonzaga,   Then , we would have to add 2 more Western teams to make it a 6 team division  . St Mary’s ?  San Francisco ? Pepperdine ? Loyola Marymount ? Santa Clara?        It’s all fantasy but , who knows ?

Exactly, they hit their free throws, don’t miss bunnies and rarely make mistakes. Little things like that make a big difference. Where would we be if we could have done those things?
So far we played Nova the toughest is the post season and got snubbed by the NIT.

Chuck Person had a nickname of his own -- The Rifleman -- due to his long-range shooting acumen.

In addition to the obvious Nova strengths like structured schemes on both ends of court, getting 50/50 balls, sharing rock and intelligent play, I tip my hat to their strength and conditioning coach. Essentially playing five guys last night, they seemed fresh down the stretch and their physical strength in blocking out and rebounding is very obvious.

The last 2 calls on Holmgren were horrible, especially the last one. I am so sick and tired of refs calling fouls on low post defenders when the offensive player initiates the contact. I understand the principle of verticality, but you've got to give the defender some movement leeway when defending against a drive to the hoop, especially since the offensive player is moving. Those ticky tack fouls are ruining the game.

ESPN advised that today just happens to be National Peacock Day.
Coincidence? I think not.
Peacocks now, most likely feather dusters  after Purdue is finished with them.

I have a Grandson  who goes to Purdue but , I’m rooting for the Peacocks ! I ll risk getting exorcised out of the family . Besides , nobody else in the family reads this board anyway .    I’ve seen the Boilermakers throw in some clunkers this year and they can do it again . Rutgers beat them at the Rack .
