Like him or hate him, Kelvin Sampson can recruit and coach. Houston closing out a win over Illini.

“Kelvin Sampson just keeps Houston Cougars rolling - he's one of best in nation.
They lost 4 of 7 guys in rotation from last year's Final 4 team. Then he lost 2 of 3 guys that came back to injury - Sasser & Mack. And Sasser is a star. Sampson brought in 3 key guys from portal”

@CollHoopsChat

Kelvin Sampson is one of the best in the business, what he has done with a dead in the water Houston program is outstanding. Much respect for him and his teams.
Would you have been ok with SJU hiring Sampson when he returned to college ball, even with all his baggage?
I should search for the post from years ago where I suggested him. /media/kunena/emoticons/cool.png

Sampson has long been an incredible basketball coach.

On the contrary , I think Evert ,  Ndefo who is from Elmont and Rurpert would be good additions to any team . But , if Shaheen goes to SH , why would they come here to play under CMA ?     Answer , None .     I was to trying to research Holloway as a Player , back in the Day .   He’s from Queens and as he pointed out in his post game interview “ he’s a New Yorker ,” and not from NJ .  He played for St Patrick’s HS in NJ and was a McD All American in 1995-1996 . How did we miss on recruiting him ?  He became a big time player at SH and received more than a few Awards and honors .
I assume Mahoney was on him, but we fired him before Holloway made his college choice.

Fran was able to get in a bit on Tim Thomas, but ultimately he said we didn't have enough time. Not sure if same situation with Holloway. I know Fran was hired and Holloway committed in April, but not sure of exact dates.

Not sure but you may be thinking of Speedy Claxton who FF tried to steal from his Hofstra commitment. I'll get back on topic by saying what a game between TCU and Arizona to finish the evening off. Arizon'a Ben Mathurin is quite a player.

No, wasn't thinking of Speedy. Just wasn't sure if Fran tried to get in on Holloway too. He definitely tried to get in on TT.

What am amazing finish in the Arizona TCU game. My sons friend and teammate Ben Mathurin hits a 3 to put the game into OT. He then scored 6 of his game total 30 points in OT and Arizona advances to the round of 16. If the entire Bball world did not know who this kid was before the tourney, as Arizona was not eligible last year due to sanctions, hopefully they do now or will very soon. Hoping this success story continues for a few more games.

Luckily for me, TCU got absolutely hosed on that last possession. That is never not a foul.

Always liked Charlie Moore and like him even more since I had Miami in both of my brackets.

Have them in the elite 8. Guards like him can make the difference in this tourney. Him vs Auburns guards, I’ll take him.

It’s still a guards game. Some of the top bigs in the country, Cockburn, Kessler, Tshiebwi all early exits. Interested to see Michigan with Dickinson vs Nova and Gillespie. Maybe that goes the other way, still, give me novas guards.

Sweet Sixteen Conference Breakdown:
ACC-3
Big 12-3
Big East-2
Big Ten-2
Pac 12-2
WCC-1
AAC-1
SEC-1
MAAC-1

Enjoyed watching Miami take down Auburn yesterday. Happy for Coaches Jim Larranaga and Chris Caputo, both products of New York City. Looks like the 3rd time was a charm for Charlie Moore. After transferring to Kansas, and then DePaul, he is providing the veteran leadership that Miami needs. Am going to be rooting for them to reach the Final 4.

#MarchMadness  Sweet 16 lines (@WynnBET):

Arkansas vs. Gonzaga -8.5
Michigan vs. Villanova -4.5
Texas Tech vs. Duke +1
Houston vs. Arizona -2
St. Peter's vs. Purdue -13
Providence vs. Kansas -7.5
UNC vs. UCLA -2.5
Iowa St vs. Miami -2.5

Larranaga played on some great Molloy teams. Don't remember if they won any CHSAA championships because in the mid-sixties, there were so many talented schools in the CHSAA.

You mean 4th time?  He started at Cal-Berkeley, then to Kansas, then to DePaul and now Miami.

Just to give you an idea of how long Charlie Moore has been in college, he was recruited to Cal and was coached his 1 year at Cal by Cuonzo Martin.  The same Cuonzo Martin that was just fired from Missouri.  Missouri will have had 3 HC's by the time Moore exhausts all of his eligibility.

Moore was also Marcus Lovett's backcourt partner in high school (Lovett was a senior and Moore a junior).   This is Moore's fifth year playing and while with redshirt and Covid years that is increasingly not rare, it is his fifth year playing having transferred three times (as pointed out) and never having to sit out a year for transferring.

This past weekend was the first time in about a decade that I haven't said Charlie Moore made a mistake by leaving Cal. He's tasted tournament glory, and he might have his PhD by now./media/kunena/emoticons/grin.png

Charlie Moore made his college debut the same day that Shamorie Ponds did.  (11/11/16)

Panther-fair enough I assumed you meant number of schools.

SJU85- He did sit 1 year. Between Cal and Kansas. He got a waiver to DePaul. Then when the new transfer rule came in they gave everyone a blanket waiver for first year of rule if you did it by 7/1 /21 regardless of how many transfers you had prior to rule. Because normally going forward to take advantage of rule it can only be on 1st transfer. So if Moore was transferring this year he couldn't be immediately eligible.

So Charlie Moore has played in the Pac-12, the Big 12, the Big East and the ACC... I'm assuming no one else has ever done that before, but with the portal you can't say it will never be done again.

Jalen Colman-Lands who coincidentally has also played at DePaul and Kansas, additionally spent seasons at Illinois and Iowa state. So Big East, Big Ten, and two Big12 schools.

The two of them might just face off in the elite 8, and perhaps again in the over 30 league I just joined.

Akingo on Baylor , who was injured Saturday has been to G Town., Arizona and now Baylor . Don’t know if he has eligibility left . If so he could make it to 4 different schools .  The Portal has made a mockery of the idea of Student - Athlete . It’s more like free agency in the Pros . But , if you don’t recruit the Portal , your team will be left behind competitively .
