NCAA Breakdown & Matchups

Butler had chances with under 2 mins left. First time down court, kid took a quick 3 and missed; next time with a bit over a minute left, another kid (I think) had a tying layup swatted away.
Purdue made a 3.
Then Butler’s prayers answered when Purdue missed first FT on a 1&1–but then missed the game-tying 3 with a second left—clanging off the rim.
Great game though.

Baldwin both times with the quick jack and 1 on 2/3 blocked layup. But IMO Butler played soft and unfocused D most of the game which is where they really lost it.

Great foul by Cuse up 3 with 7.9 seconds left.

And again with ~5 seconds left!

Man do I agree! But got to give it to Boeheim, 2 very smart fouls—up by 3 in the closing seconds—to prevent Mich State from tying game.
Smart.

One thing is obvious, after 8 years of this format.

If you are one of the last at large teams, and have to play a "first four" game, you are at an advantage going forward, if you win that game. You win as an 11 over another 11, you have some momentum back, playing a 6 seed (which is usually an at-large, so they are coming off a loss). As we know, there is very little difference between the 6 and the 11, and under this format, the lesser team (by seed) is usually coming in with all of the momentum.

Plus, you're really hurting the "better" 6, because, if the seed line stays true, the "worst" at large would be playing the perceived best 6 seed (or 5 seed, if it were a 5-12 game).

Obviously, this applies to the first round, more so then today's games, but the NCAA might want to reconsider this format, in the future.

Coaching !!!!

Syracuse was already playing a walk on and both of their centers had four fouls with 5:00 to go in the game. MIchigan State proceeded to shoot 13 threes in a row, most with the shot clock winding down.

Pretty incredible how dumb they played. I'm happy Syracuse won, State deserved to lose.

Can’t go that far since I hate the ‘Cuse, but I Give Boeheim great credit for playing very smart.

Ahh, to be a St. John's fan where most of our satisfaction comes from rooting against teams and having them lose.

It's all any of us have! :(

Great to see UNC lose and especially at a “home” game. With the Cuse win, we are now stuck with Cuse vs Duke. Ugh.

I guess I have gone over to the dark side since I have lived in NC for 7 years, but I don't dislike either UNC or Duke. Both great schools that provide great educations and I will never forget what coach Dean Smith did to promote the introduction of black players to big time programs in the south. Plus I have Duke to win it all in my better looking March Madness bracket. Yes, they get special treatment from NCAA, UNC more than Duke, but they are not alone by any means. Pools aside, I much prefer Roy Williams to Boeheim.

I know. I was wondering if there’s any way they could both lose?
