Pecora knows how to recruit. Last I read he sent Wright one of his best players
Pecora would be a perfect hire. He was highly valued by Wright, is a local guy who would live here, would not be looking for the next best deal to come along, and the Big East would be an upgrade from Qunnipiac. He had a pretty good run at Hoftsra before failing at Fordham. I don't think he would be looking for another HC job, and I believe he would be an asset here as an assistant.
I would be happy w Pecora or Rice. It seems to be obvious to most posters, but not Mullin. We NEED another recruiter. W this new transfer rule, Matt will have his hands full. I know we re not going to get anything out of Mitch in the recruiting dept and have my questions how much we are going to get out of Mullin. Not to sound too negative, dont expect much out of St. Jean also. Many Posters arent calling for Mullins head at this time, but are frustrated w his stubborness in not adding another staff member

The only thing people should be worried about is Ponds coming back. If he does we will sneak into tourney and everyone can take one year off from worrying and complaining.

Mullin wasn’t on campus for Femi visit ?

My understanding is that the first campus visit was unofficial but another official visit is coming.

Hard to believe. He had a meeting with Owens yesterday on campus.

Hey he stopped sitting on tables for you. Cut him some slack! Hopefully he was busy whispering in Ponds ear that none of his NBA contacts think you are getting drafted.

Even with Ponds back, who are our bigs? Keita and Roberts are supposed to be very raw. Diakate is recovering from a pretty significant injury and is an OSNA kid which means he's also raw. Yakwe and Owens left. We still haven't gotten any grad transfers. Even if Ponds has a NPOY type season, I have a hard time believing we make the tourney next year even totally healthy without a real assistant coach and at least 2 real bigs added.

The only unknown is whether Mullin was asked to hold off on hires until the Slice comes off the books. That's a real possibility, and I don't know the answer.

Keita will get 7 and 6.
That matches Owens.
Perimeter players will carry us in weaker BE. Ponds comes back and we make the tourney. If we don't Ponds should never ever be mentioned in same breath as Hatten again as the players around him will be better than Hatten's were.
Ponds back we Dance. Book it.
Following year everyone can go back to panic mode.

7 and 6 in how many minutes? And is matching Owen's stats good enough? (We finished last in the BE with Owens' 7 and 6.) And who'll be his back up? What if he turns out to be a foul machine who sits out a lot of minutes? We didn't have a decent back-up big last year (unless you consider Amar decent) and that too contributed to our last-place finish. Bottom line: Getting a transfer like Femi is critical if we're going to finish higher next year, let alone dream of Dancing.

Obviously going to be perimeter orientated team. Perimeter players will be good enough in a weaker BE to finish at 9-9. Ponds comes back we go 9-9 in BE, Ponds BE POY and we lose 8-9 game in tourney.
Owens was a force on D and that will be missed. But we will have enough to make Tourney.

Also, aside from the 8 pts and 6 rbds. Owens gave us, let's not forget the 3 blocks and countless shot alterations he gave us on defense. That will be harder to replace.

Something also to be said for continuity & core players experience with each other.

Honestly on D is really only place he will be missed. However I think Vinnie said it best:

Vinnie: Well, you know what I mean. He's gone, and we couldn't do nothing about it.

[pause]

Vinnie: That's it.

Jimmy Conway: What d'you mean? What d'you mean? Uh...

Vinnie: He's gone. Uh, he's gone.

Ponds, Clark, Simon!
If Coach Dale were coaching I believe he would say this:

I would hope you would support who we are. Not, who we are not. These three individuals have made a choice to work, a choice to sacrifice, to put themselves on the line 32 nights for the next 4 months, to represent you the worst fan base in sports history. That kind of commitment and effort deserves and demands your respect. This is your team!

We’ll hire “Spider” as new recruiter shooting ourselves in the foot. :)

Thought Matt was Spider? Or is ST Jean?

Players are said to read this Board. Does Staff? Boggles my mind, that Mullin was not on campus for Femi's visit. Femi O is our best shot for a quality Grad Big and according to Paultz has two 'other' local schools in the hunt.
What the hell...?

Well said - chronological commentary. One of the key attributes mentioned when CM was hired and added Mitch R to the staff was that these 2 former NBA greats would be able to use THAT experience to sell recruits on choosing St. John's. I know some mentioned that "todays players" were too young to remember C & M, but serious H.S. players have instant access to video on the Dream Teams, NBA All Star & NBA -Play-off games. Selling THAT should be an ACE in the hole on convincing a recruit "I/WE can get you to the next level". Let's be honest here, The BEST players who the top programs go after have that mind set of getting to that NBA level when they look at what School (ST.JOHN'S) & League (BIG EAST) they will choose.
That said, if you have to be IN IT to WIN IT- then YOU HAVE TO BE ON CAMPUS WHEN A TOP RECRUIT COMES TO VISIT. Unless CM had a family or medical emergency, missed a flight etc., it's hard to come up with a reasonable explanation for his reported recent absence. That GREAT personal practice work ethic, dedication to his game & TEAM while a player will always be respected. He's a COACH now & he's the one who sets the tone for THE PROGRAM. That means leading by words & ACTIONS, not relying on his reputation. St. John's fans are not asking for the impossible when they simply expect you to DO YOUR JOB!
