I definitely see this as a possible scenario. In order to resurrect a program like St. John's, the head coach needs to eat, sleep and breathe the job 24/7. At this point in his life, I don't think Chris is there. Hopefully, he releases us so we can pursue what we need.
I hear you guys, but I remain stunned.
It's antithetical to my view of CM that he would do anything 'half-baked'.
Yeah, it seems obvious he's been missing-in-action on the recruiting trail, but I attributed that to family re-lo issues.
I still retain hope that an exciting season in 2018-19, and the resolution of CM's family issues will revive CM's energy level and enthusiasm for St. John's basketball.
That's my sentiment until the verdict is in.
He is going into his 4th season and getting paid 2 million per and he has family relocation issues that are interfering with his ability to do his job? Sorry, not buying that as a legitimate excuse but I am also not saying that is the case as I have no idea what the true story is regarding CM's work ethic or his efforts toward his job.
You're right, it's not a legitimate excuse.
He's still making 2million to do a job.

If he can't do the job because of family issues, then he should step down.
Sorry, but when you're making 2million per year to do a job, there are no excuse.

I guess I'm not in awe of Mullin's greatness like others seem to be.

This year is critical to the staff and the team, no question. Having said that, family always should and does comes first whether you are making $20K, $200K or $2million. I've gone through relocations at a tough time for my kids and it ain't easy no matter what your salary is. Has nothing to do with being in awe of greatness, just putting yourself in the other guys shoes. If they bomb this year suspect there will be a change, but I hope the opposite is true. An NCAA tourney year with a couple of 4 star recruits and our best player of all time at the helm is the best outcome we can hope for.

Leaving Mullin out of this and just speaking generally but 4 years into a job you should not be having family relocation issues that interfere with your ability to do your job properly. So a doctor relocates and in his fourth year loses his last 5 patients on the operating table and goes before the board and talks to in-house counsel and explains he has been having family relocation issues. That should go over well and i'm sure the patients families will understand also.

Everyone would be much more understanding of personal challenges if he had made changes to the staff and had been a little more visible. That, plus the absurd 2nd year strikeout on getting a big man, is why patience are wearing thin.

Bamafan, I totally agree that when you are 4 years into a job (or frankly 6 days into a job) your family's relocation should not excuse a doctor from botching a surgery, That is clearly not what we are talking about here. Mullin missed being at two April recruiting periods, one because he had surgery, which I would hope we'd understand and this year perhaps because his family relocated to the west coast and he needed those few weeks to spend with them. If as a result of his spending that time with his family, our recruiting suffered a mortal blow, it may be a valid criticism, but I doubt it did. Let's give him his chance to succeed (or fail) this year and root for him to succeed. The amount of his salary is the school's doing, not his.

I hear you, Bama & JohnnyFan.
It's been a frustrating, bumpy, and ugly ride thus far and some of it--the staff's dysfunction, the sputtering chase for top recruits because of it, and CM's lethargic grasp of his recruiting role and responsibility--are on his dime, his 'fault', per se'.
His family's needs and morale have rightfully troubled the guy. I give him a 'pass' for that.
But, the roster--even sans the Big--seems to be very talented (with Ponds) and we should do real damage in the BEC next season and hopefully dance hard into the NCAAs.
My personal hope is that the team's success next year will re-energize Chris, get a few Top 2019 targets to stay ‘home’, his family will move back East, and CM will sign an extension--leading us to consistent success in future years.
The long-term revival of our beloved St. John’s basketball tradition will be real.
Time to dream...at least into next season!

I have no clue if this Mullin West Coast family drama is all of a sudden, old news or just fabrication. If true, taking some time at end of season seems OK, perhaps even regular cadence of long weekends too. If not an issue expected to subside, then don't pretend...take care of family and hand over the keys to those who can commit.

Emergency is one thing, but bailing on recruiting events and sending the management analyst in non emergency is careless. It's one or two days.

All this said ...what's up with Richmond ? He has same symptoms as Mullin ?

Does anyone have a clue if either are on campus or when they were last there ?

I am a family man, first and foremost. That said, do we actually know he is having "family trouble" or has this just become a runaway rumor.

Is it possible that his family just prefers the West Coast and CM feels no need to be on campus during this time of year? I honestly don't know.

Great points RedStormNC & JohnnyFan.
I do not know the answers.
I'm guessing from that dangerous sport of reading tea leaves, that there's credence to the rumors.
The easiest piece of dysfunction to fix imo would be the Staff, and delegate responsibility if one is however unable, to a full complement of ACs.
At this point, I'm praying a great season 'magically' resolves some knotty issues.
"We shall see."

I'll always respect any man that says family first, family is until you. You do what ever it takes to make sure they are good and safe. I respect any guy like that. Better then a POS father that don't care, does drugs and abuses his wife/kids.
Now on the other hand, you have a $2mill a year job, you gotta honor that too, yes even the off season, that's where you get top recruits for the future.
Should it take 2 months to solve the family issue, then maybe you should step down. You want what's best for your school but can't do it with your family issues.
Maybe someone else can get them to where you want sju to be at.

Oldschool I hear you. Tough love at its best.
Let’s agree to hope that 2018-19 begins the revival of St. John’s basketball for many years, damn the predicates.

I have absolutely no idea what is going on with Chris and just hope everything works out. All of this speculating serves no purpose.

I remember when Coach Lavin took off a whole year and some on this board were saying that he could have returned but quit on the team. I had a conversation with someone close to him and learned that was not the case. When Lavin learned that he had prostate cancer, he wanted to put any procedure off until after the season since this was his first recruiting class. By trying to wait to have a procedure done, the cancer got worse so when he finally had the procedure it was a lot more complicated and there were residual effects. Some may say that they saw Lavin during that season and he looked ok. I have personally taken that medicine for prostate cancer and what happens is that I felt miserable for a few days, gradually got better, then it was time to take some more. If someone only saw me when I came out, they would have no idea what I was going through.

This is not a defense of Chris or Lavin, only stating that when we begin speculating about another persons personal issues, we do ourselves and them an injustice.

Excellent post Panther2. You are right. We should limit our speculation to the success of the team and our new recruits. Point taken.

You comparing a doctor and his patients lives to a college basketball coach is very laughable.

I will go one step further Panther. If someone says Chris can't coach, I would say that he has radically improved since year one, and now is clearly the HC during games. It is reasonable to discuss whether he can be a good coach in college bball. I might say he is showing all the right signs, others can disagree.

If someone wants to say we haven't closed enough big time recruits, it's a reasonable discussion to have.

If someone wants to question staffing decisions, such as replacing Slice (if there wasn't a reuqest from up above not to take on more salary), or if the Richmond hire has brought value, that's reasonable.

What's completely unfair, and I take offense to, is characterizing Chris as lazy, cashing a check, not working hard, not caring, any number of presumptions on his character. These are mostly coming from people who have never met him, don't know him or his family, or his background, or have a personal beef because of who he allows around the program.

It's ridiculous character assassination, and merits a measured response when it's incessant and growing virally as if it's fact.

There may appear to be consensus on here that next year is NCAA or bust, and if bust, Chris will be shown the door. I would say that rationally to expect that Chris Mullin would be fired while given less time to build a program starting with the weakest starting roster perhaps in the last 50 years or more, is just not going to happen. I haven't even heard crickets chirping about that from administration, so I can't believe that's a strong option at this point. On the subject of leadership, I get the impression that they are pleased with the leadership he brings to the program, even when L''s outnumber W's, for now at least. 11 L's in a row should have been enough for the team to fold and quit on him the way Matt Doeherty's NC

I'm not family, and I'm not his friend, but I also know him well enough that I don't feel inclined to sit back when his character is assassinated. None of us who have interacted with or followed Chris over the years should.

BOE, you have framed this Mullin issue about as well as it can be done .. It’s time to stop the never ending dialogue that just is way over done .

But as fans of the program and some who are paying customers who donate money to the school we are allowed to sit back and watch as every other school in D1 has their coach at different events and our coach is AWOL for what seems the second year in a row? Everybody claimed about Lavin not not recruiting well Mullin is no better at this time.

You specifically know he is AWOL? Or if he is even in NY or Cali at this moment? Or how many days if any he spent at home with his wife since the season ended? Or how many hours a day he is working from his home in CAli if he is indeed there?

Are you trying to tell me that for certain at this moment Coach K is in Raleigh, that Cal is in Lexington and spend little to no time away from there in the summer?

Look the fact is that ANY coach could be working the phones and doing his job remotely. In terms of recruiting, head coaches often come in to seal the deal, the way Bill Self does in Kansas when Norm does all the leg work.

Why don't you just judge Chris on results, keep the commentary about results or decisions, and not specualte as to where he is or what he is doing?

I am curious for edification purposes, and whatever the answer is somewhat irrelevant. Do you happen to be one of those big donors you referenced in your note? Not that a big donor has any more say on here than a fan who doesn't donate, but you may have a say as to who the school hires or fires.
