Mullin Update

There will always be fans who knock the coach. IMO, Lavin really only started to get knocked by a fair amount on this board and the others during Year 4. And that is because we had a team that should have easily been in the tournament and perhaps won a game or two. And even then, folks like myself didn't start getting on him until well into year 5, when it became apparent that the guy whose strength was recruiting had put all of our eggs in only a few baskets against incredibly stiff competition. And the Jordan situation years 4 and 5 didn't help by any means, as folks got sick of the constant drama but realized we had no choice but to accept it.

But he definitely is getting a pass on stuff that people didn't give lavin a pass for because people were Mullin sju fans.

Can you name some of stuff Lavin wasn't given a pass on ten months into his tenure that Mullin is being given a pass on?
I never said 10 months but to get to your point of 10 months some people were knocking him for Dunlap using the board for plays in a lot of the huddles and people knocked him for sitting talking to keady during games and some people even knocked him at some point after the pitt win because of comments that Burrell made about not really coaching during the huddle that Lavin had basically just gave them a pep talk and he didn't really coach them in the huddle or something like that

And Bobre was killing him for Sean Evans sitting on the bench but that was just Bobre being Bobre

Go back and look at people trashing after the fordham loss

By year two some people on here were accusing Levin of faking how sick he was after cancer treatments in order to stay away from coaching.

This isn't rocket science. Everyone with half a brain should know that Mullin is learning on the job. When Coach K first started coaching I'm sure there was someone who taught him. Who drew up plays, who helped him understand the intricacies of coaching. Mullin has all eyes on him because his first coaching job is a high major program that he once starred at. Under a microscope. Especially nowadays when cameras and microphones are allowed in the huddles.

You don't wake up one day and perform brain surgery. You learn, practice and perfect it. No different with coaching. No difference with actually any type of job.

Coach K. played 4 years under Bobby Knight at West Point. He was then an assistant for one year under Knight at Indiana. He then coached 4 years at West Point before landing the Duke job. I can't think of any better coach to apprentice under than Bob Knight. Before there re any cracks about Knight's legendary temper tantrums, look at how long his assistants stuck with him, which tells you something about he man. In any event Coach K. had a short coaching apprenticeship under Knight, and by the time he had his first HC job knew how Knight recruited, how he ran practices, and how he coached from the sidelines.

Anyone commenting on Mullin knows he could not have changed the outcome of more than one or two games maximum based on games we had a small chance of winning but didn't. That's really not the question.

When I strongly advocated for Mullin at the end of the Jarvis regime, then again at the end of the Roberts regime, and then again when Levin was fired, all that I insisted that he be given a chance because if it worked, there would be no finer choice to head this program and become the face of SJU (not just the face of SJU basketball). I still feel that way. A winning program under Mullin, and we have the closest thing we could possibly have to Coach C. - a guy who went here, loves SJU, and won't be looking for greener pastures. Remember that two guys who had success here - Fraschilla and Jarvis - immediately tried to cash in for something better, and it was the beginning of the end for them and this program.

No one on the face of this earth deserved a shot at coaching here more than Chris Mullin, because nobody contributed to our program's success more than he did as a player. No one is more revered as a player, and rightfully so. No one would be a better representative of everything good about the school than Chris. All that warrants him is a fair chance to succeed. While we may debate how well he is doing so far, even those most critical of what we see on the sidelines would suggest that this program isn't going in the right direction, and that each of the following two seasons promises to be much better than this one.

It's fair to discuss what we've seen so far, and also fair to say that on here at least no one is giving up on Mullin as coach just yet. But then again, he shouldn't be Teflon in terms of him being protected from criticism.

No one who is smart is critical of St. Jean or Slice speaking in the huddle. Then again, no one who is smart would say that it's okay for Mullin to be far away from the huddle while those two are coaching. All correctable things, and I suppose over the next season or so, we will see a different Mullin on the sidelines. Certainly with the players coming in, it will all be worth watching.

[. The one thing I can say with certainty having followed the team closely since 1981 is that the 2015 and 2016 recruiting classes are the best we have had since the 1983 and 1984 classes. In fact they could turn out better. .

RMN, you're one of my favorite posters of all time but that statement is just silly. Not one player in the last two classes comes in with significantly better expectations than Tarik Turner, forget the fact he came in with two other top 10 recruits, and they came in one year after a two man class that both played in the NBA. Sealy/Werdann/Sprolling/Buchanan much better too, and at the risk of Fun having a heart attack neither the 15 or 16 class matches up with even the guys who did make it to campus in Lavin's one big class, forget about the ones who cam later or the one that never did. So having two okay classes in a row is nice but it would be nicer to have one great one followed by one okay one. I'm happy with the talent but not nearly as much so as I have been with the three classes above and not that much happier than about a half a dozen other periods over the years. Until RF proves he's really Dirk and not Sergio and Bashir that he's better than James Scott then we have a stellar one man class. The two useful pieces of the class of 15 are projects and then we have Lovett, who hopefully makes me forget I was ever this cynical.

You can also add Fraschilla's 1997 (Artest, Jessie, Crooks, and the late James Felton) and 1998 classes (Barkley, Thornton, Glover, and the likes), respectively. Jarvis' 2000 class was also "tough," per rankings (Cook, Cuffe, Shaw, Diakite, and the likes).

Miles was already in his fourth NBA season when the scandal happened.

This is a little unfair. That class had 4 years to grow and get better, and probably would've never seen the NCAA tournament if Hardy never came here. You've only seen this class for 3/4s of one season, who knows how they will progress and how good they will be four years from now

i don't think this is fair at all. it took that group 4 years to make their first ncaa appearance and they were bounced in the 1st round (to be fair, losing kennedy killed any chance they had). we have no idea how mussini, ellison, sima, and yakwe will progress over the course of their college careers. i'd say just in raw talent alone, sima and yakwe surpass that group.

Sadly, I think if our current team did not rank 10th out of 10 in free throw percentage in the Big East and we didn't have a (what feels like) 30% FG percentage on lay ups instead of what should be around 95%, we probably wouldn't be 0 for 12 in conference games and this thread would not be so long.

Only 7 more losses to endure and only 247 more days until Midnight Madness....

The way this thread blew up over the past day, I half expected to read that Mullin decided that coaching wasn't for him and decided to join the circus. Instead, everyone is pontificating on his lack of coaching acumen. Mullin wasn't hired to develop a winning strategy for a team of talented but undisciplined Lavin recruits. Those guys left for the NBA, the D League and Turkey. The thinking in bringing back our greatest player ever, was to expect him to do what the last guy didn't: put his years of experience as a player and NBA executive , love for SJU basketball, and connections, to work to create what Nova, Xavier and most of the Big East schools have. A program that works.

Is Mullin restoring shredded local ties? Check
Did he use his friendships and connections to hire 2 A rated recruiters? Check
Is he and the staff busting their asses to get 4 and maybe 5 star recruits? Check

To rate his coaching with this team is difficult. While most of the game is about getting good players, there is certainly a skill set involved for coaches. There is also a skill set involved in being a jockey. But it's mainly about the horses. Mullin doesn't have the horses. He is doing what is necessary to get them, and to continue to get them. When that happens, he will be judged by wins and losses. Out of respect to the coaching industry, it's crazy to expect him to be a top level strategist with out even a minute of assistant coaching experience in his entire career. As the talent gains experience and improves, Mullin will do the same. There was certainly a risk in hiring Mullin. After the last bunch of hires, SJU needed to take a risk. If you are going to take a chance, Mulllin was the right choice. I have seen nothing to dissuade me so far.

Where did you see me say that they are so good? How good a class is isn't determined by how well they do their freshmen year. Hi Salty and Austour, Jack W, SRed, RMN - I've enjoyed your collective comments

I think SD the proper adjective would be good and not " so good" and further, of course, Sima's been hurt and LoVett and ( is it) Owens not available AND Chris Mullin having no time to enhance the class.

All in all nice!
And wins ahead!

This is a little unfair. That class had 4 years to grow and get better, and probably would've never seen the NCAA tournament if Hardy never came here. You've only seen this class for 3/4s of one season, who knows how they will progress and how good they will be four years from now

if this class is so good how come they can't win a Big East game?

Where did you see me say that they are so good? How good a class is isn't determined by how well they do their freshmen year. You think any nova fan thought the recruiting class of Arcidiacono and Ochefu was going to be their winningest class of all time? You don't know they will progress. And if you wanna talk crap on these kids for not winning a big east maybe you shouldn't be around for when these kids right the ship the next years

You can't make a good cake with just two or three good ingredients.

they started making a team relax wait for 2017 its gonna happen
